We learnt about how bitcoin is helping business owners increase sales, pay suppliers, improve hygiene, and protect against theft.
In a politically divided world, the Free Private Cities Foundation offers an alternative vision for governance.
At its heart is the idea that people should be free to choose the kind of governance that they want based on the principle of mutual consent.

Yet the harm done by ordinary criminals is negligible in comparison to that inflicted by zealots in command of the state apparatus.

A Free Private City is not a utopia.
It is a business idea whose functional elements are already known.
What we propose is to transfer these elements to a new market: the market for living together.
Free Private Cities oferecem a prestação de serviços de governança em base contratual, com as obrigações de ambas as partes descritas em um acordo voluntário.

Free Private Cities would not have central banks or monetary policy, and fiat currencies would not be granted a privileged status.
Instead, people would be free to transact with the currency of their choosing, including with fiat alternatives such as
#Bitcoin
and
#gold
.
Free Private Cities protect life, liberty and property, but otherwise give citizens the freedom to do as they choose.
Citizens obey simple rules and the city guarantees them basic security, so that they can focus on what they do best.
This short video explains how they work👇

@anilsaidso
puts it well👇
Our societal structures are hard to change from within, even when they no longer serve us.
That's why we need to build parallel structures – like Free Cities – that offer a better alternative.
Our new video, filmed at
@LibertyIOL
2022, explores: .
3/ Monetary Freedom
Free Private Cities do not have central banks.
Citizens are free to use whatever currency they prefer including fiat currency, Bitcoin or gold.
Gradual deflation becomes a normal part of life, with purchasing power increasing due to productivity gains.
How do Free Private Cities differ from regular cities?
A key difference is that the relationship between city operators and citizens is defined by a “Citizen Contract”.
This 12-tweet thread explains how this contract works and why it protects life, liberty and property.
For the past week, our team have been in El Salvador seeing firsthand how
#bitcoin
is empowering people across the socioeconomic spectrum.
In a country where 70% of the population are unbanked, bitcoin is allowing people to save for the future and take control of their finances.
1/ In Free Private Cities there would be no central bank and citizens would be free to transact in the currency of their choosing.
This thread explains why central bank manipulation of money is counterproductive and why FPCs would benefit from a real market in interest rates.

Africa's future is urban, and it seems to be private. With many new private urban projects turning into SEZ's, the continent's rapidly growing population will enjoy lasting economic development that only liberty and self-determination can achieve.

When taxes are uncertain, citizens are less able to plan for the future and businesses are less willing to invest.

Rather than relying on a hypothetical social contract that is only changed by one side (the government), Free Cities have a real contract that treats citizens and City Operators as equals.

In this thread we outline ten principles that define our vision for this alternative governance model, and why territories that adopt them stand to become more prosperous, just and socially cohesive.

4/ No Mandated Licensing
Without licensing requirements, entrepreneurs can provide services in areas such as healthcare, education and energy in the manner that citizens choose.
Innovative businesses such as Uber and Airbnb flourish, and help keep living costs for citizens low.
1/ A Genuine Social Contract
The defining aspect of a Free Private City is that there is a voluntary, contractual relationship between the city's citizens and those that govern it.
On the one hand, city operators can decide on criteria for citizenship, and their fee level...
Imagine a world without the frustration, wasted time, legal fees and fraud associated with tax returns.
Free Private Cities remove the deadweight loss of calculating taxes.
Instead, citizens have a simple contract for city services and know in advance what they need to pay.
2/ Flat Governance Fees
Rather than being subject to a complex array of taxes that can be changed at the whim of politicians, citizens pay a flat annual citizenship fee to cover basic city administration costs.
Elaborate tax compliance industries become a thing of the past.
7/ Freedom from Ideological Division
Since residents know that they cannot interfere in the contracts of fellow citizens, political activism, missionary zeal, distributional struggles and the stirring-up of social groups against each other loses its appeal.
On the other, the services provided by the city operator and its powers are clearly defined.
Terms are outlined in a real contract which both citizen and operator sign before beginning their partnership.
Once signed, neither party can change the contract unilaterally.
This quote by
@JeffBooth
sums it up: "There is no fundamental law in physics that requires inflation."
Citizens of Free Private Cities would be free to protect themselves from inflation by saving and transacting in non-inflationary alternatives to fiat currency such as
#Bitcoin
.

5/ Free trade
The city places no barriers on trade with the rest of the world.
Everyone can import overseas goods duty-free.
Since goods can be bought at world prices, the cost of living falls further, helping even low-income earners achieve a high quality of life.
"I really don't care, from a symbolic perspective, what flag flies on my boat. What I care about is escaping the tyranny of governments & achieving freedom."
Practical strategies for living on the ocean.
On the podcast this week...
Too often politicians disregard Sowell's first lesson of economics by promising voters a free lunch.
At FPC, we understand that prosperity results not from coercive redistribution of existing resources, but by creating the conditions for peaceful generation of new wealth.
In modern states, the "social contract" between citizens and their governments can only be changed by one party. And that party is not you.
The Free Private Cities model would replace this one-sided relationship with a partnership of equals.

Since there is no unconditional right of abode in the city, those who do not comply with court judgments can be evicted, lessening the need for criminal incarceration.
Our 10 principles do not propose a utopian, top-down vision for societal control.
They instead provide a model that allows for constructive competition between small-scale governance systems, based on a voluntary partnership between citizens and those who govern their territory.

What are Free Private Cities?
In this new interview
@TheAustrian3
talks to Rahim Taghizadegan (
@scholarium_at
) about the definition of Free Private Cities and the extent to which the principles that guide them are being implemented in practice.
Economists have no rational model for dealing with unowned "public goods".
Without profit or loss mechanisms, such goods are not subject to economic calculation and face a "tragedy of the commons" problem.
FPCs resolve this by making property rights comprehensive.
6/ Citizen-led Social Care
Low governance fees and security of property rights lead to greater prosperity.
Citizens acquire more wealth which allows them to insure against illness, death, need of care or accidents, and to support others in need through charitable projects.
9/ Independent Arbitration
Disputes between citizens and city operators are heard before independent arbitration tribunals, as is customary in international commercial law.
If the operator ignores verdicts or abuses their power, their citizens leave, and they risk bankruptcy.
How have the governance models of London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai helped them to succeed and what can we learn from their experience?
@saifedean
shared his thoughts on this question with FPC president Rahim Taghizadegan (
@scholarium_at
).

Our proposal to create Free Cities is not utopian.
We don't try to change human nature, we seek to extend time-tested business practices to a new market: the market of living together.
Join us in building societies based on self-determination, voluntarism, and non-aggression.

explains why it is a mistake to view the economy as a pie of fixed size.
In Free Cities, we aim to grow the pie by unbinding the hands of entrepreneurs and allowing the market discovery process to work.
Most countries are plagued by seemingly irreconcilable conflict over politics, with different groups competing to extract wealth and resources from one another.
Rather than trying to change the status quo directly, we propose building something new: Free Private Cities.
Governments are not demigods.
They are collections of fallible individuals whose interests may not align to those of the public.
We need to start thinking differently about government, treating governance as a service like any other.
