just hit $800k on upwork as a wordpress dev... only $200k away from the $1m milestone 🎯 honestly wild to even type that out. let me break down how i got here because i know people are curious the key was going all in on wordpress. like, completely all in. none of that "jack of all trades" approach. when you specialize, you can command premium rates. my average project is now sitting at $15k+ which still blows my mind been obsessed with staying ahead of the wordpress ecosystem. every new feature, every trend, i'm implementing before clients even ask. that's probably why i keep most of them around - 80% stick with me for the long haul the client relationships though... that's where the real value is created. it's not just about building sites anymore. i essentially become their digital strategy partner. sounds corporate but it's just about understanding their business objectives interesting note - my jss did drop to 97% recently. took on too many projects because i got excited (we all make that mistake). learned quickly that balance is essential. you can't be that "always available" developer and maintain any sort of work-life balance back at 100% though ;) looking at that $1m goal now... feels ambitious but achievable. probably 12-18 months if i keep focusing on enterprise clients who understand the value of quality work being transparent - there's a lot of misleading advice out there. seen too many "experts" get exposed lately. if you're going to follow anyone, stick to the verified high-performers like @joshburnstech @morganomedia @upworksaves @freelancemvp these people consistently deliver results. no fluff, just proven strategies from legitimate top earners on the platform fascinating journey so far... grateful for all of it. even the setbacks provided valuable insights. see you at the $1m update 💪

@breakout_anton Agreed. That’s something I’ve also noticed, but at least for the first page you have to be at least top rated or have your profile really good standing with good Upwork SEO

@marcusgrimm To be honest, I’m not noticing too much of a difference, but it’s worth leaving it on. The way I see it can’t hurt.

This is the future!
🚨ANTS SOLVED TRAFFIC 100 MILLION YEARS AGO—WILL SELF-DRIVING CARS USE THEIR SYSTEM?! Apparently, ants are better at traffic management than humans, and it’s not even close. A study from the University of Trento shows that ants, on their tiny 30-centimeter “highways,” handle two-way traffic with zero jams, no pileups, and no idiot cutting in at the last second. Meanwhile, humans can’t make it through a 4-way stop without drama. Here’s how ants do it: they follow pheromone trails like tiny GPS signals, march in tight platoons with minimal gaps, and—get this—they don’t even try to overtake each other. Researchers used deep learning algorithms to track their speeds, flows, and densities, and found that ants keep things seamless by prioritizing cooperation over chaos. This could actually teach us something. If autonomous cars (CAVs) worked like ants, using advanced communication tech to “talk” to each other and the road, we could form tight, high-speed convoys. No more brake-slamming for rubberneckers or pointless lane-hopping. So yeah, ants—creatures with brains smaller than a grain of sand—have mastered what we still can’t: moving in a straight line without turning it into a disaster. Your move, humans. something fascinating is happening with upwork's new notification system and their algorithm... been way more active since they launched these job alerts on my phone and email. finding myself applying to significantly more jobs simply because they're catching me at the right moment... but here's where it gets interesting... this increased activity led to a flood of direct client messages. and this actually makes perfect business sense... think about it from upwork's perspective: - i'm using more connects (effectively spending more money) - i'm actively engaging with their platform - i'm responding to notifications quickly - i'm showing them i'm a serious user upwork is a business. when they see users actively investing in the platform through connects and engagement, they reward that behavior. it's just smart business... the algorithm seems to work like this: - more proposals = more connect purchases - more activity = more potential matches - more engagement = more revenue for upwork - more revenue = better visibility for active users suddenly getting messages like "saw your profile, would you be interested in..." way more frequently. it's not coincidence - it's their algorithm rewarding platform investment... this is particularly interesting because it creates a natural flywheel: - notifications lead to more applications - more applications lead to more visibility - more visibility leads to direct messages - direct messages lead to more work upwork wants users who are actively investing in the platform. when you demonstrate that through consistent connect usage and quick responses, they boost your visibility... honestly, it's pretty brilliant from a business perspective. they've created a system that naturally rewards their most engaged (and profitable) users... if you're not leveraging these notifications and staying actively engaged, you're basically choosing to be less visible. the algorithm rewards action... would be curious if others have noticed this correlation between platform investment and increased opportunities...

@marcusgrimm It’s actually pretty interesting. I’d usually apply on a separate day or over a set period of days once I feel that I need a new job, but since I’ve gotten the notifications, I’ve just been applying a bunch more. So this is probably a win-win for Upwork.

contrarian take: while everyone's pushing the "diversify your income streams" mantra, i'm going the opposite route... combining upwork wordpress dev with my saas startup .. here's the thing about concentrated bets and compound growth that most miss... warren buffett didn't start with berkshire... he used insurance float as his leverage point. my dual approach is the modern equivalent... at least that's what I could come up with lol, and it's what I'm good at.... wordpress projects fuel s growth, creating a powerful cash position the math gets interesting... at 20%+ compound growth through strategic concentration (not diversification), this combined income engine could hit $20m+ in 15 years... think about it... most founders drain savings to bootstrap, but i'm building while maintaining steady wordpress income... it's the opposite of what conventional wisdom suggests the key insight nobody talks about: it's not about just surviving the startup journey... it's about using steady dev cash flow to amplify saas growth... that's where real wealth compounds current position: profitable wordpress practice funding .. next phase: accelerated saas growth... end game: 8-figure portfolio through concentrated reinvestment... this isn't conventional startup advice... just sharing how i'm turning freelance income into saas rocket fuel... ;)
