Werk Thoroughbred Consultants. Doberman pillow. Cat bed. OTTB mom. Get my permission to use photos. Sid Fernando + Frances J. Karon: Observations (link 👇🏻)
This is Beholder's mama.
But she is also Into Mischief's mama.
As well as Mendelssohn's mama.
25yo Leslie's Lady, the 2016 Broodmare of the Year, is retired and happy at Clarkland Farm.
Her 2yo daughter Marr Time is a msw winner in 1 start.
If you love horseracing, it doesn't get any better than seeing something like this. In the
@keeneland
winner's circle, Wesley Ward encouraged the children of owner Hat Creek Racing to pet Chili Petin after the 2yo filly won her debut.
The first person on the ground to congratulate Javier Castellano on his Kentucky Derby win? Todd Pletcher.
Castellano now has a Derby to go with his Oaks (Cathryn Sophia, 2016).
HRH was greeting the officials lined up to welcome her to the racecourse but when the horse-drawn carriages began to leave, she paused and turned to watch the horses go. Her expression instantly changed from pic one to pic two. She just lit up! I love it.
I don't understand the knocks against MyRacehorse. Look, these folks aren't in it to make money. They paid $206 for a microshare and the feeling of, "Hey, that's my horse!" It's only two hundred bucks and it's a cheaper ride than DisneyWorld. I'm glad to see them enjoy it.
I stopped off to pay my respects.
Greatness is meaningless without a benchmark to measure against. Recognizing that an athlete like Secretariat was great — whether you think he’s the best ever or not, or whether he’s your favorite or not — doesn’t belittle those before or after.
If you think Chuck Fipke only loves on his horses *after* they win races, Lady Speightspeare in the saddling paddock wants you to know that you are wrong.
This is how he is around his horses – whenever, wherever.
Channel Maker on Friday afternoon, after his 56th and final start. The 9yo gelded son of English Channel was a champion in the U.S., where he won 7 Graded races (4 G1s) including a G2 this year, and Canada, where he was a Classic winner. Here's to a long and happy retirement!
Bobby Ussery once told me in re: Dancer's Image, "I won the Kentucky Derby and they can't take that away from me."
Medina Spirit may not have understood the magnitude of "the Derby" but he knew he'd done something big. All who worked with and loved this horse will never forget.
While we're fawning over sexy new stallions going to stud, Lemon Drop Kid, age 25, is contentedly enjoying mud baths and reliving his championship older horse campaign in his paddock at
@LanesEndFarms
, where he's pensioned. The winner of 5 G1s incl. the Belmont has sired 99 SWs.
Take Charge Lady is the big winner of the two Rebel divisions at
@OaklawnRacing
: her son Take Charge Indy sired Long Range Toddy, and her daughter Charming produced Omaha Beach.
It seems almost fitting that A.P. Indy and Preach, who were both 31 (and born 5 days apart), died within days of each other. Their son Pulpit, who died in 2012 aged 18 (and who was not even a G1SW), has been the most influential son of A.P. Indy as the sire of Tapit.
Bob Baffert was passing through the
@FourStarSales
barn at Keeneland when this massive, well-balanced son of
@WinStarFarm
sire Tiznow came out of the shedrow and stopped him in his tracks. A $500,000 bid later, I can't wait to see what Baffert does with this dude.
Silverfoot as a 10yo during Kentucky Derby week in 2010. The winner of three consecutive editions (2004-2006) of the G3 Louisville Handicap made his final start a few weeks after this photo, and he got to spend 10 years enjoying his retirement before his passing this morning.
How to behave when you've tossed your rider: 1. Stand there quietly like an innocent contemplating life; 2. Eh, screw it. Run. Run! Run for it! 3. See what it feels like to be a bucking bronc, in case the rodeo comes to town and the racing thing hasn't worked out.
Funny Cide as happy as I've ever seen him, reunited at Saratoga in 2015 with connections Barclay Tagg, Jack Knowlton, and -- his favorite person -- Robin Smullen.
Oh he was so happy to see Robin!
Art Collector was going to retire to Claiborne, his birthplace. It's where, within the first four generations of his pedigree alone, Bold Reasoning, Secretariat, Spectacular Bid, Forty Niner, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, Private Account, Damascus, & Hoist the Flag had all stood.
Secret Oath, selling on Tuesday as hip 180 at Fasig-Tipton with Bluewater. The limited edition Arrogate filly was the winner of the 2023 Kentucky Oaks by two lengths over champions Nest and Echo Zulu, and she finished in the top three in 14-of-18 starts. A real collector's item.
I went to PetSmart yesterday to get dog food. Suffice to say that it was the most expensive trip to the store for dog food. I came home w/ this & a cart full of stuff for it.
It’s not very big but it hisses, it purrs, it snuggles, & it likes to chew on hair.
Naming in progress.
I really, really love Scat Daddy's Caravaggio. Pictured at
@coolmoreamerica
this afternoon and (second and third shots) at
@coolmorestud
in January. He's a great mover and very athletic...however many feet he has on the ground. I'm looking forward to his first 2yos next year.
Now that I'm done crying (for now), I have no words for this amazing story. What a finale for this special, special horse.
Cody Dorman and his horse Cody's Wish, truly a fairytale ending.
I spy with my little eye something beginning with H.
Welcome back to Keeneland, Harley (and Steve)!
The big man's winter break is over and he's getting ready for his first day back to work. Come on out to the races and see him beginning Friday, opening day of the spring meet!
The prize for getting a photo of Medaglia d'Oro with his ears up is having a photo of Medaglia d'Oro with his ears up.
The sire of Rachel Alexandra and Songbird will be 23 (!!) next year.
Yeats, by Sadler’s Wells. Now 19, he won four (!!) Ascot Gold Cups, as well as the Irish St Leger, Prix Royal-Oak, Coronation Cup, etc., with at least one Group 1 win at the ages of four, five, six, seven, and eight.
Caravaggio, one of 3 Scat Daddys at
@coolmorestud
(plus 2 at
@coolmoreamerica
), incl. No Nay Never, who has quickly established himself as a top sire and has everyone excited about sons of Scat Daddy.
A Royal Ascot winner at 2 & 3, G1SW at 2 & 3. His 1st foals are yearlings.
Being a racing photographer is a lot of fun. The downside is that we spend tens of thousands of dollars on equipment, insurance, time, and energy to sometimes deal with folks, including professional companies like
@M3Media_
, who think nothing of using our work without permission.
Seeing Miguel Mena entered to ride two horses (one a 6/5 favorite) at Churchill tomorrow and five on Friday is hard to process. I hope they all go out there and win it for Miguel.
One week after Malathaat dominated the G1 Spinster at Keeneland, her 2yo sister Julia Shining made a winning debut at the same track. Todd Pletcher trains both Curlin fillies. Luis Saez was up on Julia Shining for owner/breeder Stonestreet.
Recognize this rider taking a spin around Keeneland? Despite a Triple Crown in the U.S., Derby wins in five countries, and a Hall of Fame career, he never raced at Keeneland. Steve dusted off his boots this morning to get on one for Kellen Gorder.
Tacitus is a G2-winning, 2x Classic-placed son of Tapit and champion/5xG1SW Close Hatches. He's a direct descendant of 1982 Broodmare of the Year Best in Show, family of El Gran Senor, Try My Best, Xaar, Rags to Riches, Jazil, Peeping Fawn, etc., etc., etc. First season in 2022.
Marr Time, the penultimate foal out of Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady – and thus a half-sister to champion Beholder, G1SW/leading sire Into Mischief, and G1SW Mendelssohn – makes her career debut today at Keeneland. Clarkland Farm bred and owns the daughter of Not This Time.
He hardly looks thrilled to have all that dirt on his face. And in his eyes, his mouth, his nostrils... Roaring Lion, we all know that wasn't your thing today.
America's Joy, photographed the day she sold for $8.2 million at '19 KeeSep...and this morning.
Condolences to her connections and to everyone else who loved this daughter of American Pharoah and Leslie's Lady.
