gradually losing my identification with my profession. It may go like this over time:
Student of X
Journeyman of X
Pro/Master of X
Teacher of X
just some guy
In this 🧵 we will unpack and over-analyze this absolute masterpiece of a meme, and I'll tell you what I got out of this meme, basically because
@AbstractFairy
and
@danielbrottman
dared me to.
Deep breath of air. OK lfg 🚀
This is Douglas Hofstadter, professor of Cognitive & Computer Science at Indiana University Bloomington
Best known for his book Goedel, Escher, Bach (1980)
this is nerd 🧵 about his influence on me, and the present
@AgatheL_22
the four foreigners all say “yes” in their respective languages but when pronounced as an English sentence it sounds together like “yes we see you”
You gotta love the glorious nerds who write Wikipedia. Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot for "30 pieces of silver", and Wikipedia editors worked out what the coins were, and what the modern USD equivalent would've been
After years of meme jealousy, second-guessing, millions of repetitions, it finally comes full circle to where it needed to go
Giving memes happy endings could be an entire genre
Oh by the way to kill French vampires you have to drive a baguette through their heart. It’s very painstaking
(This is a lesser joke for only being bilingual)
This is Rozzi Roomiar, painter in San Francisco, whose work focuses on the colorful, psychedelic, and transcendent vision of reality.
You've almost certainly seen one of her works around here a lot recently, it is called "The Mask"
It's gotta be this way for a while. But good news, it's escapable by many routes, some harder, some easier. Here are some ways I've seen people escape:
This is the Flammarion Engraving. You've probably seen it before but didn't know it was called that.
In this thread we're going to nerd out about where this came from, what it means, mistakes people have made about it, and more. lfg. 🚀🧵
I have previously dared the ENTIRE INTERNET to deliver more quadralingual jokes, a better quadralingual joke, or even ... a pentalingual joke
How can I egg on more people to better this?
@eigenrobot
2020s genre of agitprop literature where a camp performs its belief to itself by asking seemingly-reasonable but actually agenda-pushing questions about the other side. Spiritually related to the conspiracy theory genre of "I'm not saying, but I'm just asking questions"
Meeting daughter’s first boyfriend today, at a family party. Well, meeting him first time in his “capacity as boyfriend” I’ve met this guy before
This seems very stressful for daughter, it isn’t for me. He’s fine, decent guy, everything’s ok.
Wish me luck
@forthrighter
Two cats tried to swim across the Seine River. One was named One Two Three, the other named Un Deux Trois. The One Two Three cat made it, but the Un Deux Trois cat sank.
One weird thing Freemasonry did to me was showing me how much information isn't available online, I previously thought most things of consequence are. That is definitely not the case
And about how much is lost in an ongoing way
I think about cultural compression and history loss a lot. Imagine the universe of written stuff humans created 📘and how very old written texts get lost ❌ over time
Wait I don’t need luck, I’m fine. She might need luck that I don’t inadvertently do something completely normal like ask him how he’s doing that may be painfully embarrassing to her.
So she may need some luck
Crazy but true:
Big tech company; hires a lot (>100) of sales ppl. Flies them to big swanky orientation offsite. First day, there's a 5-hour open bar
Second day, 5 or more get fired. This repeats every quarter
Alcohol used as a weeding out mechanism
@Jeanvaljean689
the thing that most kills me about this video is seeing the combination of:
(1) she's extremely effective
(2) she has literally no idea what the fucking project is even about
that particular combination kills me
A very good friend told me to get a copy of Metamagical Themas. This is actually a collection of articles written for Scientific American but its scope was absolutely wandering, and nuts. Way wider than anything I'd ever read
book is like pure intellectual play. He wanders around, completely disregarding any rules or boundaries between computer science, math, philosophy, politics, and 5 other fields, and just has fun, creating insights, connecting ideas
mind blowing for 17-yo me and I fell in love
now through the elements, zoom back out to the big picture. Humanity adopts all approaches simultaneously, and the literature from a thousand years ago says this has not actually changed
only the wojaks are new
@RebeccaMadison_
committed relationships are a depth game; depth takes a massive time & resource investment. Simple pragmatics: you can go deeper & further with one person than you can with many, because of opportunity cost of time
There is a special ladder in Jerusalem that nobody is allowed to move, and its story is related to the origin of the term "status quo"
The ladder and the story 🧵
Context collapse Olympics; I submit that this shot has (at least) 3 different levels of collapse, I'm wondering if anybody can go 4 or 5 levels in one shot
In philosophy there's a neat little summary I've always liked:
Metaphysics: "What is So?"
Epistemology: "How do ya know?"
Ethics: "And so...what should you do?"
Top row is metaphysics
In honor of
@visakanv
's soon to arrive child, I propose a lighthearted game my family plays called "How will this child rebel against their parents when they're 16?"
Angels as depicted in those visions in the Bible are famously FUCKING TERRIFYING CREATURES who say "be not afraid", they are not pretty humanoids with wings and harps. Many jokes abound about them
rational careful thinking people will find much to admire in multiple approaches. It's fucking weird man. None of them is dead on right, and none of them are 100% wrong either
If you are feeling high levels of fear, anxiety, or panic, what do you do to self soothe?
I am not asking what people should do or for general tips. I am asking what you do.
Most Hofstadter fans want to first tell you about how great Goedel, Escher Bach (GEB) was - and it was great - but honestly Metamagical Themas was my "hook point" and is top 5 most influential books I've read in my lifetime, on me personally
back in high school I was a nerd, but I didn't have access to other nerds. Interest in esoteric topics was strongly socially punished, and it felt (to me) there was no one around me with much interest in learning and/or curiosity. It was pretty isolating
Careful with frames, they're dangerous. Like the Myers-Briggs or "Culture Maps". Once you know about them, everything becomes "about the frame"
oh you just said that because you're low context, or task based
Well two obvious answers are at opposite extremes.
But only a sith deals in absolutes. Can't we readily see what both of these are doing?
“There is a solution to every problem: simple, quick, and wrong.” H. L. Mencken
I think about cultural compression and history loss a lot. Imagine the universe of written stuff humans created 📘and how very old written texts get lost ❌ over time
Cube brain at the center symbolizes the fundamental tension in all of this. There's real anxiety here. Real need to know what's real
And this poor bastard stuck in the middle of the meme, that's you. Or me. Or us.
"What is real?" It's a question that philosophy has been asking since before the ancient Greeks
We will not chill about it. We're humans and we wanna know. Real bad.
wikipedia: the ultimate honeypot (in its own words)
ofc it doesn't really matter whether Jesus was betrayed out for ~$90 or $400. The story would be the same if it had been $50,000.
crazy shit happens every day. We're in an period of epic polarization and institutional distrust. Fake news, AI generated content and just plain nuttiness is everywhere. People are right to wonder what's real and what isn't. So it begins.
I do a lot of coaching; trying to help ppl in careers; want to footstomp this point
when I'm working with someone who has this, helping them is 10x easier and their results 10x better
when they don't, a lot of my help boils down to gently steering them into getting this
It isn’t kind to drop too much truth on people all at once
Durable insights come from “here, kitty kitty” helping a person to see something on their own, not telling them
well actually contradictions are not a problem; they're information. Contradictions mean one of two things:
- maybe you got facts/framing wrong
- maybe you got them right, but there's a missing unifying framing which would resolve the contradiction
@CXGonzalez
@TylerAlterman
you just summarized so many things in one tweet
caloric restriction, dieting & weight loss
alcohol dependence, cessation & health improvements
hard work on education & career progression
1. Question assumptions. "I should be unstuck" ORLY? Coming from where you're coming from, maybe you've got some shit to work through, maybe it's OK to be stuck. Just admitting it is major progress. Your next step is "I feel babystep progress" no longer the "I suck" loop
this morning saw this video: guy gets called a "pseudo-intellectual douchebag". Proves the commenter right with a fun educational video
pivots the criticism into just doing his thing, helps everyone else with high quality education
kingly attitude, 10/10 would hang out with
this makes sense because they've persisted so long. You might think the arguments for some positions are bad or dumb, but each school persisted a long time and was very convincing to a great number of people. The meme's survival is proof of its fitness, in other words
Visa's original thread included this comic further down which is so good I have to resurface. Frame 1: the comic. Frame 2: different picture, same loop we're discussing
these books also developed and revolved around a central Hofstadter idea: the "Strange Loop" which is as easy to explain using MC Escher artwork as it is to explain with words
Sorry to harsh your "The Matrix" buzz but you don't live in a simulation, if a piano falls on your head, you're dead
And not everything is real. Believing that will lead you into becoming prey to particularly nasty psychofauna that are running around
But which is which
when you identify a load bearing beam in someone else's ideology or worldview, proceed carefully. It's an advantage that you've spotted it. That does not necessarily mean you should kick it out
@VividVoid_
Buddhist monk walks up to a hot dog vendor and says: 'Make me one with everything'
vendor laughs, hands him his hot dog with everything and says '$4 please'. Monk gives him a $10 and waits. And waits. Awkwardly, monk asks "What about my change?"
'Ah' replies the hot dog
about 17, I met a few people outside of my school who were nerds and seemed to revel in it, like it was no big deal. They seemed like magical creatures to me, because they were similar and yet ... not punished for it? Anyway, we became friends pretty fast
ok so at an open bar, if somebody gets sloppy drunk and acts a fool, it's gonna cost the company, IDK, $150-200 of liquor
let's compare this to the cost of employing a bad person for 6 months and possibly a sexual harassment lawsuit...
omg these guys are geniuses
@moanaris
@sporadicalia
basically anything/everything to break the formation. Lobbing large rocks into the formation would be a good call. But I think (1) is an important call-out: make sure to fight on the right ground you choose/prepare
wonder how this looks tryna cross a stream
"My religion is science. I don't trust men in religious robes, I like my authorities in different ceremonial robes. I still trust what they say unquestioningly because don't have the time to verify for myself"
By telling you, "eh, they're all a little bit right", I'm inhabiting cube brain midwit guy. It's too much. Why are you overthinking this, you tryhard
notice the tension
1st reaction: this is a very darwinian, unkind, "hunger games" way to run a company
2nd reaction: I kinda like they fired the sexual harassers and sloppy drunks, would it be better if we didn't know?
he publishes another book that's no consciousness stuff, it's just pure play. No joke: he takes 1 trivial poem in french and translates it a zillion different ways, just to explore how translation works
@upstatefederlst
nothing's monocausal; lots of exercise was withdrawn since 1920 by the suburban planning model, other processed foods exploded, and 50 other changes. Total caloric intake is the key metric, sugar is just one source
my unironic position is that all positions in this meme are true (to some degree, in some context) and that the midwit (i.e. you, me, other people) are driving themselves crazy by unreasonably demanding one simple clean answer
GEB was more play, but the themes wove together better, and more clearly outlined that this is really all about intelligence, consciousness, "how we tick" as humans. What does it mean to "think"?
"I reject this adventure and don't want to participate. I don't know, I don't want to think about it, this whole situation feels very threatening, I opt out of the conversation"
(When done right this can look wise, even if it's flight)
