Half an hour - 20 quid down and all I got was a flat pint, a quarter of a tray of okay chicken and only myself to blame.
Cardiff Food & Drink Fest - predictably woeful.
This bleak Saturday has been saved thanks to Tom's at
@craftydevilbrew
in Penarth
The double - well seasoned and properly smashed beef, cheese, pickles and sauce. I'd have liked a little less sauce so the beef could really do its thing but otherwise it's as good as it gets
This is Cobbles Deli (Ogmore) tribute to the Cubano - heaps of Pulled Pork, Ham, Salami, Cheese, Mustard and Pickles. Style and Substance both on show here, a very good sandwich that held itself together surprisingly well. Looking forward to trying a few more over the summer.
Also how good is
@CardiffMarket_
at the moment?! For me, it represents the positive direction Cardiff seems to be heading in towards enhancing its reputation, which people are all too quick to take cheap shots at. A way to go, but we should shout about the places we're proud of.
September is looking good food-wise. It began in earnest with a meal out so I could write specifically about one dish... probably my favourite in Cardiff.
Panang Pbed - Moo Moos, City Road.
Current status - girlfriend is away for the weekend and I accidentally got absolutely bladdered on my own last night and now I'm crying because I'm hungover and all I want is to eat is this burger again.
Tukka Tuk Canteen has been forced to close permanently.
This is a huge loss to Cardiff's indy food scene from two of the biggest legends in the game and it should never have been allowed to happen.
This won't be the last - use them or lose them people.
A wander through
@CardiffMarket_
for Lunch today and a mound of bloody good looking pulled pork from Sage Deli caught the eye. This wrap only a fiver, pork delicious and plenty of it. I'm now back in the office and contemplating booking a meeting room out for nap
The Indian breakfast special from Kimi's catering at Riverside Market once again bringing me back from the absolute brink - Bhajis, Bombay Aloo, Chicken Kebab & Samosa & Chana Daal, veggie options available too. Each element an absolute flavour bomb and all for a measly £6.50
The Pork Tonkotsu Sando from
@TokyoNightsSF
at
@CardiffMarket_
is one hell of a sandwich.
Japanese milk bread, thicc pork cutlet breaded and fried (to perfection 🤪) with cabbage, a sweet and tangy Tonkotsu sauce, mayo and mustard.
All for imo a very wallet friendly £7
Crabbie Crab at
@tukkatukcanteen
- crab meat mixed through a bisque like curry sauce with a heftily spiced crispy soft shell crab plonked on top. Loved this so, so much - a real statement dish.
Kindle have just announced their closure at the end of this week via Instagram.
Everything that everybody in hospitality has been screaming about for months is coming true. Horrendous times out there.
Just seen an Instagram reel describe a place in London as serving "authentic Italian tapas" and then proceeded to bleat on about how it served Patatas Bravas and Padron Peppers and if you listen carefully you can hear the soul of
@cleanplateblog
wretching in the background.
I haven't stopped thinking about this dry aged pork I had at Parallel last night - I didn't go for any blog purposes but it would be daft of me not to at least share it & suggest you book yourself in. I've been three times now and it seems like they've really found their groove.
The aforementioned prawns, swimming in a gloriously deep and well made bisque - suck on the head, eat the legs and don't forget to ask for a spoon. This lands easily in to my top 3 dishes of the year.
The
@HeaneysCardiff
Sunday Lunch offering is such ridiculously good value at £35 for three courses. I'm now home, well fed and eyeing up a bottle of red to continue the party.
First thoughts on the new
@brotherthaiuk
Roti Bar on Whitchurch Rd. About as lovely as you'd expect. The Thai Fried Chicken especially is a masterpiece and the very opposite of whatever it was I had from Honest yesterday. Exciting times to be on Whitchurch Road.
Another visit to Tukka Tuk Canteen tonight - probably even better than last weekend to be honest - This is the sort of place we should be shouting the loudest about so go book yourself in and go see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
The Philly from
@ceginoriel
The pick of the two - slices of Bavette steak with Peppers and Cheese Sauce all housed in a properly great baguette. A couple of twists of salt needed but other than that a really good sandwich and a nice homage to the classic.
A two cheese / two meat board from
@VermutCDF
on Saturday.
The Cecina especially was a big hit and as always the Olives are absolutely phenomenal.
The best thing? The entire board cost £12.
Sourdough, Avocado, Feta and Eggs fried in a crispy Chilli Oil that is so good you'd be forgiven if you'd asked for the jar and a spoon.
Twenty Six @ The Bone Yard - Canton.

This year has been quieter than I wanted & this is why, 4 stone down and learning to be happier with myself has been my focus
Not looking for any well dones, just posting to say that I still love food & Im looking forward to being able to take a more balanced approach in to 2024
@cleanplateblog
My man Gaz from
@freshbaguette1
- I've never seen the guy without a smile on his face, knows all of his customers on a first name basis and always has time for a chat - seriously knows his food and booze as well.
Strongly considering setting up camp outside
@Milkwoodcdf
and ordering the Karaage from
@MatsudaiRamen
on the hour, every hour, until their residency ends. Up there with some of the best small plates available in Cardiff today.
The Thai fried chicken at
@brotherthaiuk
is a must order. It's great, always has been. That being said, I can only imagine the scenes if they developed it in to one of the best chicken sandwiches in Cardiff.
First to the table at Parallel was a flatbread which if not for the existence of my eyes the aroma would've convinced me that it was a 10/10 burger.
It tasted every bit as good as you'd expect a freshly cooked flatbread smothered in a metric fuck-tonne of beef butter to taste.
NEW POST: Tukka Tuk Canteen shut its doors for good today and when a place that is as good as this can't survive for more than a couple of months then we should all be worried about what is coming.
If Kindle's potatoes are an attitude laden slap to the face, then Poca's crushed new potatoes smothered in garlic aioli and parmesan are the opposite - gentle, warmly comforting and designed to be eaten by the bowlful, getting better with each bite.
AD | Partially comped
I was lucky enough to be invited to
@thomaspontcanna
last night where I was fed this outrageously good beef wellington which at £50 (£25 pp) including two sides is one of the most wallet friendly ways to eat some of the best cooking you can find in Cardiff.
Another quick word for the brilliance of Parallel last night - Lamb Chops with an XO jus which was sweet, sticky, slightly hot and ridiculously addictive. Another marker of how good their cooking is right now.
Lunch today comes in the form of a roasted pork Bahn Mi from
@Hanoi1991
in Royal Arcade.
A good portion of roasted pork with an ideal meat to fat ratio. Freshness comes from cucumber, pickled carrot & radish while the addictive heat of Sriracha rounds off a comforting Lunch.
Oh god - I remember eating the original hoof burger for the first time at sticky fingers in the brewery quarter (rip feel like pure shit just want u and Friday happy hour back xx) and having my mind blown -
@kapow_ribs
put me down for 700 of these
Coming to
@Goodshedsbarry
soon.
Zi's Cafe doing the good Lord's work
- Chicken w/ Leek and Dried Chilli
- Empress Duck Cakes (Prawn Toast with added Duck, because obviously)
- Double Cooked Pork Belly
- Special Fried Rice
Despite all the plainly great food, I think my favourite thing about last night was seeing how full
@Asador44
was, on a Monday at the beginning of January.
There was a real vibe in Cardiff yesterday with the sun out for the first time in forever - all of the Indy's we visited were absolutely packed and buzzing.
- Natural Wines @ Nighthawks
- Campari Spritz @ Scaredy Cats
@ScaredyCatsCDF
- Vermouth & Tapa @ Vermut
@VermutCDF
A life restoring munch courtesy of
@ZisCafe
- Fried chicken with Leek and Chilli
- Empress Cakes (Prawn Toast w/ Duck)
- Special Fried Rice
- Braised Pork Belly in Soy Sauce
Clean as all hell and most importantly delicious but you already knew that didn't you.
Unbelievable good Pierogi from Cardiff Market for lunch.
Generously packed with Beef Brisket which was deftly seasoned. A small pot of Peppercorn Sauce on the side adding a rich touch and a tickle in the throat.
Backyard takeaway pic klaxon - The "Pepperoni Bomb" from Roma'Eat is one of the best pizzas, if not the best I've had from them yet.
Pepperoni
Sausage
Nduja
Red Onion
Goats Cheese
Crispy Fried Onions
It ain't traditional but it's bloody good.
Absolute shite from
@WalesOnline
this - It's referring to Pennyroyal who are refurbishing and re-branding so are closing temporarily for a few weeks.
Click bait like this only serves to damage these places rather than celebrate the small wins they are able to get.
This "chocolate cake" from
@thomaspontcanna
is up there with the best desserts I've eaten, it had everything.
I do wonder when
@MichelinGuideUK
are gonna wise up and give them a star because Thomas is undoubtedly operating at that level for me.
Yesterday's post failed trip down the bay feed courtesy of
@PubGrange
who are serving up some of the better pieces of fried chicken you'll find in Cardiff these days.
As Monday begins and I stare down the barrel of another long week of eating right, memories of this are getting me through.
Crispy chicken thigh glazed w/ soy & garlic / confit garlic mayo / sesame slaw / coriander / pickled onion.
Heartbreaking that I had to share this.
Curry, Cheese, Chips -
@AnshCymru
.
Levels above what you can find on Caroline Street after a night on the sauce. Have thought about these about 16 times already this morning.
NEW POST - I hadn't planned on writing this one but seeing as I had a very nice time - national emergencies in Cyprus and a poolside holiday in central Cardiff courtesy of The Brass Beetle.
Nasi Lemak - A breakfast staple in Malaysia and my tea last night
A mound of coconut rice acts as the belly filler with fried chicken to the side begging to be demolished. Crispy Anchovy provides a piscine hit and a sambal delivers a decent whack of heat. Comforting.
Happy Lok
This morning I mainly woke up thinking about this deep fried Lamb Lasagne from
@DirtyGnocchi
last night. Genuinely one of the best things I've eaten so far this year.
First day back in the office since before Christmas means a perfect excuse to go visit
@thebeardedtacos
at
@CardiffMarket_
Flavours absolutely on point as you'd come to expect and at £6.50 for two it's a bloody good Lunch option.
Top, top evening at the
@VermutCDF
tasting at Sibling. All Vermouth's were brilliant and some Pan Con Tomate with Anchovies were a brilliant touch. Thursday boozing is great tbh.
I must say that our first visit to
@kenpictonsalon
/ deli on Friday was a good one - was with some pals so didn't get my usual photos but tartare, sea bass ceviche and burrata dishes were superb.
A bit pricey, as is the way these days but I can see them doing very well.
One hell of a Saturday Morning spread...
@MaasisCardiff
breakfast Naan loaded with Hash Browns, Mushrooms, Sausage and Egg with some spiced beans on the side for dippin. French Toast with Custard and Apple Compote.
Two x Samosa Chasers too. One veg, one Lamb.
Sunday is take out night and Moo Moos got the nod yesterday.
Not much of a looker post delivery but for my money; the Panang Red is up there with the most complete dishes in Cardiff today. Best served simply over some steamed rice and letting that curry do all of the talking.
- Cured Pork Belly glazed with Quince.
- Celeriac Remoulade
- Crispy capers
- Almond
This has gone down as one of my all time favourite plates of food from
@bar44tapas
and is further proof that they continue to be at the top of their game - genuinely perfect.
Don't mind me - just blessing your Monday morning timeline with
@HeaneysCardiff
sourdough and Marmite butter. I'd say it's one of the rare times where it's acceptable to say if you know, you know but if you don't then get to know baby.
Whitchurch Road has been a proper credit to Cardiff's independent scene over the last few years and it still is but it's taking an absolute battering right now alongside many other streets just like it across the UK and the only people who can do something about it just won't.
BBQ Pork Tacos from the one and only
@thebabhaus
- A mound of pork: smoked, pulled and seasoned with pitch perfect precision. I reckon I could've eaten 17 and still wanted more.
Crab Rarebit - about as delicate as a bit of cheese on toast can be. The Crab doing wonders here, just about holding its own against a pretty prominent cheese sauce and ensuring the last thing you can taste is its dainty meat.
Days like today were built for slices from RomaEat - so happy to see this place go to new heights in their new space at the forner Anatonis site.on Albany Rd. Pizza as good as ever.
