ANOTHER UPDATE ON ROD PHILLIPS: I learned that St. Bart's requires a negative COVID-19 test to enter. I asked Phillip's office if he got one before departure. They confirmed he did "purchase" one. I've asked what private facility he went to + when + how much he paid...
CBC has made multiple interview requests with Lecce's office since Dec. 30 and he hasn't been available. He did do an interview with CP24 on Dec. 31. We requested an interview again this morning. Hopefully we will hear from him soon. I know a lot of parents/teachers would like to
CBC’s Katie Nicholson is trying to inform Canadians about what’s happening on the streets of DC & is swarmed & harassed & prevented from doing her job. Thinking of her & all the journalists working hard & putting themselves at risk today to cover this historic story. Stay safe.
But Dr. Peter Juni, a member of the Science Advisory Table, said on CBC this a.m. the table did NOT advise the closing of playgrounds (which the gov did do) + DID advise for paid sick time + closing more non-essential workplaces (which the gov. did not do).
I asked Premier Doug Ford's office yesterday for a comment on the Ambassador Bridge blockade, and several of his ministers and didn't get any responses. I have asked a few times again this morning.
UPDATE ON ROD PHILLIPS STORY: Where did he go on his August trip outside of the country? His office now tells me it was a "personal trip to Switzerland." I had asked again this a.m. where he went + if it was a vacation or had an essential purpose.
(CBC asked Lecce's office yesterday and again this morning when an announcement will be made + we have not received an answer. I have also asked multiple times whether teachers will be given N95 masks and they have not answered that question)
At her briefing Toronto chief medical officer Dr. Eileen de Villa calls for paid sick days, even on a temporary, emergency basis. "The science supports this."
Peel MOH Dr. Lawrence Loh re: people turning down Moderna: Says it's equivalent to turning down an available seat on a plane to get you off a sinking island because it's not your preferred airline. "I can't say this clearly enough, please take whatever you are offered."
Good morning from Queen Street where a new

Trudeau speaks directly to Canadian kids saying he knows they miss their friends, they have to wash their hands a lot, thanks them for helping their parents work from home etc. He says his own kids are watching a whole lot of movies.
Good morning from the first Chick-Fil-A location in Canada, opening at 10:30am. First woman in line got here 10:30 last night. Protests planned by LGBTQ advocacy group

Asked about how Education Minister Stephen Lecce hasn't been too visible lately, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says he's all but gone into hiding & and his lack of communication is not helping to foster any confidence in the government's plans for a return to class.
CBC is interviewing an Ottawa psychotherapist right now whose clinic is in the protest zone. She says she was harassed on her way to work by people wearing swastikas on their arms, who yelled racist insults at her.
Some hard to hear news out of the 3pm briefing with Dr.Williams + Dr. Huyer---people are dying AT HOME of COVID, found by their loved ones. They deteriorated too quickly to seek medical help. About 2 deaths PER DAY in last 2 weeks. People in their 30s-70s, Huyer said.
Question to the Science Table's Dr. Juni by Heather Hiscox this a.m. on CBC: The closure of golf; tennis etc. "Did your science table advise the premier to do that?"
Juni: "No, of course not, the opposite." 2/2
The roll call is underway, a virtual trip to America’s 57 states and territories, where they will cast their votes for Biden + Sanders, one by one, alphabetically. At real life conventions, this is one of the fun events. By the end of this,Joe Biden will officially be the nominee
Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca is calling on the government to add LCBO and cannabis stores to the places that require proof of vaccination; and to require 3 doses of the vaccine to be considered fully vaccinated for the proof-of-vaccination certificates.
Ford's office still hasn't responded to my Qs about whether he knew Phillips also took a vacation to Switzerland in August. This is relevant in terms of whether this is a first offence, or second offence in terms of Phillips not telling his boss he was leaving the country.
A surprise promise in the Ontario Budget: A new mystery park. The government is pledging to create a new, 4-season, provincial park but it doesn't say where. Or when. Or how much it will cost.
Horwath tries again to ask Fullerton when she knew seniors were dying of neglect. Fullerton says the "premise of your question is bordering on obscene."
Horwath says what is obscene is nearly 4,000 seniors dying in long-term care.
Today is the 1 month anniversary of me asking Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
for an interview to discuss the major changes she has made to Ontario’s education system. She has been “unavailable” since Aug.21. Today is also a day when students are staging a walkout to protest
I spoke to one of the unions for Ontario teachers & they say they have not been consulted by the gov. about a return-to-school plan. The unions sent a joint letter to Ford, Elliott and Lecce on Dec.17 outlining suggested safety measures + urged them to contact the unions to talk.
As of Sunday, hospitals are being told to charge patients $400/day if they do not accept a LTC bed chosen for them, as Bill 7 stipulates. At 9:45 the Ontario Health Coalition + the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly to announce a Charter challenge.
This is odd.. Premier Ford tweeted a graphic this morning that appears manipulated--a CTV logo placed on a CBC article by
@markgollom
from Dec. He now seems to have deleted and re-posted with a CBC logo on it. But it's still not an accurate graphic of how our web stories appear
To recap: Ford says he'll take advice on re-opening from Moore. Moore won't tell us what his opinion is, punts to Ford saying it's his decision, but he'll give Ford data to help make it. He won't foreshadow the decision. Ford foreshadows, says he'll have a good announcement.. 1/2
Dr.Michael Warner
@drmwarner
on CBC just now: “We are in so much trouble...” Describes how he is scared of the new variants; a patient in her mid40s is fighting for her life, infected by her husband who was infected at work, in a factory.
Dr. Peter Juni, head of
@COVIDSciOntario
on News Network this a.m. In light of how transmissible Omicron seems to be, he says to reduce your social contacts; have small gatherings only; stop going to crowded places; work from home if you can. "It is a really massive wave coming."
Ford also acknowledged he knew before yesterday that Phillips was in St. Bart's. They spoke by phone shortly after Phillips went there. Ford said it was "my mistake" not to tell Phillips to get his "backside" back to Canada.
"Look around the world, Ontario is doing pretty well right now," Premier Doug Ford says, on a day with 4,227 new COVID infections, the 2nd highest daily number since the pandemic started, and with a record number of patients in ICU at risk of dying from COVID (552).
I have asked Health Minister Christine Elliott's office for a comment on her cabinet colleague flouting her advice/pleas to stay home over the holidays + on Phillips paying for a COVID-19 test to take his trip to St. Bart's as per their entry requirements. No response yet
Ouch! Premier Ford just swallowed a bee while taking Qs from media. "I'm ok. he's buzzing in there. Man, he went right down the hatch."
Ford calls this a "classic," and that he'll be "howling" watching this on TV later.
If and when Minister Lecce holds a news conference or does an interview, what Qs do you have for him? Parents, students, teachers/staff, what's on your mind as we kick off another week of online learning and schools set to open one week today?
Good morning from York Regional police headquarters in Aurora where police are about to detail a huge organized crime investigation, Project Sindacato.
Happening now: The leaders of the NDP, Liberals and Greens doing a joint news conference with health care union leaders to call on Doug Ford to recall the legislature to deal with the health care staffing shortage crisis. (Legislature not sitting until end of Feb)
#onpoli
One thing to remember here is Ford has known almost all along that his finance minister was in St.Barts. He did not ask him to resign/fire him when he first found out, as far as we know, it was business as usual with Phillips working from there.
#RodPhillips
I didn’t hear back from her office all day so just followed up on my 7am interview request with Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
and was told she wasn’t available today. She has been unavailable since Aug.21 when I started asking to talk to her about sex ed changes
Re: ban on camping in Ontario. I still don't have a good answer from the government on why people can travel to their cottage but can't go pitch a tent. All they're saying is that camping will be allowed in Step 1, "consistent with many other recreational activities."
Here’s the news release from Peel Police on the arrest of Frank Stronach and the charges he is facing. Police say the alleged assaults spanned from the 1980s to as recently as 2023. Stronach is 91 years old.
Canada's largest school board, the TDSB, just confirmed it will continue with planned VIRTUAL graduation ceremonies, rejecting Ford's suggestion that in-person events be held. TDSB says months of planning have gone into virtual events; costs incurred; not enough time to switch.
For those following my ongoing requests for an interview with Ontario’s Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
(I started asking on Aug.21), I was told today she is not available at all this whole week.
And in other news, Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
continues to be "unavailable" for an interview. She has been unavailable since Aug. 21 when I started requesting an interview on the province's changes to sex ed. I requested again today and no luck.
I’ve been covering the story again today of Ford’s plan to use the notwithstanding clause but don’t worry, I still made my daily request to interview Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
about sex ed. The same request I have been making since Aug.21. She is still “unavailable.”
The clappers are back. Instead of working at their desks, staffers pack the room at Ford’s announcement and applaud to drown out reporters once Ford’s press sec announces no more Qs allowed, despite a line

Huge rally happening outside the Ministry of Labour right now telling Doug Ford to keep his hands off the minimum wage hike and other reforms in Bill 148
This morning I renewed my ongoing interview request with Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
and I've been told she is "unavailable" today after question period. She has declined my interview requests since AUGUST 21.
Peel MOH Dr. Lawrence Loh at briefing this a.m. says he'd like the province to hold off on lifting the Stay-at-Home order in his region. He recommends the "status quo" for at least 2 more weeks to see impact of schools resuming + the spread of the variants of concern.
BREAKING: Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips is back in Canada, arrived at Pearson airport this a.m. He apologized for his decision to travel to St.Barts "I know I disappointed a lot of people...no one more than myself."
#RodPhillips
I asked Doug Ford about putting his nephew in cabinet and he said, "He's very qualified, 10 years of political experience." Michael Ford is 28 years old, became a school board trustee in 2014 (when he was approx. 20 yrs old); then elected to Toronto city council in 2016.

Thanks for the review and for noticing the art. It's by a very talented Vancouver-based artist named Quinn Fitzpatrick, who happens to be my nephew. Keep your eye out for rotating works of art in my background in the weeks ahead!
BREAKING: Premier Doug Ford has been issued a summons to testify at the Ottawa inquiry into the use of the emergencies act. A letter from the commission says both Ford + Jones have refused multiple requests to be interviewed by the Commission + invite to testify voluntarily.
NEW: 41 more COVID deaths reported in Ontario today--41 in one single day. This means Ontario has now surpassed 8,000 total deaths.
884 people are so sick they're in ICU, 620 can't breathe on their own + are using a ventilator to help keep them alive.

BREAKING: Alek Minassian, whom Justice Malloy referred to as "John Doe" in her decision, found GUILTY on all 26 counts. Malloy rejects the not criminally responsible defence.
Canadians are taking note of the women who are guiding the country through the pandemic. These top doctors are "fierce" + "calm"+ "inspirational" their fans say. Read my piece here:
UPDATE: Fullerton's office responded that she left her news conference to attend question period, which of course was NOT my question. I asked why she wasn't available AFTER to take more questions on the commission's report. I followed up & asked again but no response (yet?)
Fullerton only took 3 questions and then left the room. She had to get to question period. I'm not sure why the decision was made to schedule her news conference at 10am, knowing question period is at 10:30. Queen's Park press gallery is requesting she talk to us after q.p
Good morning from Spirit of York distillery in Toronto’s distillery district. It is one of several distilleries that is converting its operations to making hand sanitizer. They are donating the proceeds to local food banks.
Ford's office hasn't responded to my request for comment about finance minister Rod Phillips leaving the country on a personal trip. Still hoping to get some answers to my questions, preferably in time for my story for The National tonight.
Wonder why Health Minister
@celliottability
doesn’t highlight daily deaths from COVID when she tweets out the new data every morning? Me too. So I asked her office if there was a specific reason why she doesn’t report them along with the new case numbers.
NEW: I've learned the Ontario government has formally requested assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces."In addition to health human resources, we are requesting logistical and operational support as we seek to augment our response to COVID-19."
BREAKING: Premier Ford just commented on Rod Phillips, says the finance minister will be back in Canada tomorrow and they will have a "tough conversation."

BREAKING: Ontario sets a new record for daily COVID cases: 3,519.
AND
**89 people died in the last 24 hours. Ontario's health minister does not highlight the number of deaths in her daily report, but the number of people dying every day in Ontario is staggering. 326 since Jan.1
Ontario is reporting 3,519 cases of

and nearly 65,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 891 new cases in Toronto, 568 in Peel, 457 in York Region, 208 in Windsor-Essex County, 175 in Waterloo and 174 in Durham.

For those following my repeated requests for an interview with Ontario Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
dating back to Aug.21:
I made another request today & was told again that she is not available. (I also ask when she WILL be available + ask to schedule a time but no luck)
Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
is unavailable for an interview yet again today. It’s Day 9 of her not taking questions on the sex ed changes; parent consultations; new platform for parents to complain about teachers etc.
Ford declined yesterday to apologize to Horwath, and defended his "nails on a chalkboard" comment to her. He was not in the legislature for question period this morning, he was doing a photo op at a construction site. So he missed a reprimand from the Speaker about MPP behaviour
"She's an absolute champion," Ford says about deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland.
"We are on the same team, we are on Team Canada...this is how we are going to defeat COVID19, by working together," he says of the fed gov's collaboration with the provinces.
Looong line of people waiting to get into question period at Queen’s Park, here to protest Ford’s use of notwithstanding clause to slash Toronto city council
The Ontario NDP is calling on Ford to do more to help end the Ottawa protest. They suggest he threaten to revoke the commercial vehicle operator certificates, driver’s licence, licence plates, if they refuse to leave. I’ve asked Ford’s office for a response to this idea.
A group of Toronto doctors are organizing a "street presence" tomorrow near the hospitals on University Ave to ensure health care workers + patients can get in/out OK, free of any harassment/intimidation by protesters...
That vaccine photo op will happen around 1130am. Ford + Elliott are not scheduled to take media questions there, despite many, many things us reporters would like to ask them about. Hopefully they do an avail soon.
I sent my daily interview request to Education Minister
@LisaThompsonMPP
over three hours ago, awaiting a response. Day 6 of requesting an interview. School starts a week today + many outstanding Qs on sex ed curriculum, planned consultations, the "snitch line" etc.
BREAKING: Midnight tonight Ontario imposing "Phase 2" type restrictions in T.O, Peel, Ottawa:
*no indoor service in bars/restos
*gyms/fitness studios close
*no sports games, training only
*cinemas, casinos closed
*and more restrictions
28 days minimum
I reached out again today to
@LisaThompsonMPP
office asking for a response to my email on Monday asking if and when I can ever get an interview with Ontario's Education Minister (I've been asking since Aug21) and still no response. I followed up yesterday as well and no response.
No surprise,
