Mao Asada helped a group of deaf students learn a tap dance routine and performed it with them on live TV (as part of a 24-hour charity special). What an angel! 😭
Japanese interviewer: Mentions the “medal ceremony later.”
Shoma, blank faced: “Medal ceremony???”
Interviewer: “Uh, yes, the medal ceremony in the evening...”
Shoma: “???”
Babe, did you think the stuffed tiger was all you got?

Interviewer: “Regarding Uno, do you see him as a rival or a little brother...?
Hanyu: “More than a little brother, he’s closer to a puppy... He’s so cute... my, not pet, since I don’t control him, rather, he’s free...”
😂 The ultimate awkward-cute pair!

Yuzuru Hanyu, who was married in August, has announced his divorce.
Best wishes—and privacy—to both Hanyu and his former wife during what must be a difficult time.
This is Ryuichi Kihara’s 3rd Olympic Games, but his first time making the individual Olympic free skate.
He and Riku Miura’s 7th place finish is Japan’s highest ever—the country’s previous Olympic pairs record was 14th, in 1992.
Yuzuru Hanyu performed his new free program, “Origin,” an arrangement of the Tribute to Ninjinsky program by Evgeni Plushenko, at open practice. This is a news clip.
Medals for everyone on Team Japan at Challenge Cup!

Wakaba Higuchi said she felt pain in her right shin after the Olympics, but it wasn’t until after Worlds that she got it examined and learned she had a stress fracture. Healing it is her priority.
Regarding the next Olympics, Wakaba says she’s taking things year by year.
Rika Kihira announced she has been accepted to Waseda University. From the spring, she’ll enter the School of Human Science’s e-School program, the same program Yuzuru Hanyu graduated from this year.
Rika said she plans to return to Switzerland from mid-January.
🚨It was announced by JSF that, from the 2020-2021 season, Daisuke Takahashi will compete in ice dance with Kana Muramoto (who was partnered with Chris Reed through the last Olympics). They’re aiming for Beijing 2022. This season’s Nationals will be his final singles competition.

I’m glad to see people acknowledging that a young skater has little to no choice in whether she breaks doping rules—it’s adults who pursue that option.
However, it’s useful to ROC if the ONLY narrative becomes “That poor girl,” ignoring the impact on clean skaters.
Nobunari Oda announced on YouTube that he will dip his toe back into amateur competition—he plans to compete this month in the qualifying round for Japan’s National Sports Festival.
Qualifiers will compete at the sports festival in January 2023; 2022 winner was Sota Yamamoto.
NHK confirmed that Shoma Uno will be practicing several places before deciding his new training base and coach.
This explains why he was secretive about his off season training!
It’s still possible he’ll choose a coach in Japan, but it sounds like he’s leaning toward overseas.
Mao Asada made a special performance video to promote the new Mary Poppins movie!
It can be seen here:
Mao has done a popular exhibition program in the past based on the first Mary Poppins movie.

and 4th in the free dance. 🎉
Can’t wait to see what they’ll have ready for next season! (And Jr Worlds in March!)
Yuzuru Hanyu wasn’t going to accept silver at this year’s Nationals. He was taking gold. And platinum. And the the diamond medal, if you have one.
He literally just went out and debuted a program with an Olympic-winning performance. I’m still processing.
#JapanNats2020
Short interview with Yuzuru Hanyu on the news just now.
No new info on his programs, other than re-confirmation that they’re both new, and he doesn’t plan 4A at Nationals. Official practices start tomorrow and the competition Friday, so there’s not long to wait now.
Attendees are saying that during the finale of Fantasy on Ice today, Yuzuru attempted 4F, Evgenia attempted 4S, and Mai attempted 3A. None of them were successful, but, wow, what a world we’re in. 😅 What are we going to see this season??

JSF has announced their initial 2022 development athletes list (similar to a national team).
⚠️1: Note that these are decided on whether skaters meet objective criteria (Jr/Sr National results, championship results, World Standings). They are NOT a statement of who the
Mao Asada held a press conference to announce that her ice rink, Mao Rink, will open in fall of 2024. It’s under construction in Tachikawa, Tokyo.
It will have a main and a sub rink. It’s planned to be a venue for a skating school, academy, ice shows, etc.
JSF announced that Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara have been selected to represent Japan at the Beijing Olympics and 2022 World Championships.🎉
The 2nd tweet in the thread confirms what Meagan D said on TSL—M/K will skip next week’s Nationals due to travel restrictions.
Imagine training with all your might the last four years while repeatedly being told you had no chance at an Olympic medal because it’s a guaranteed Team Eteri sweep (3 names TBD).
Then you skate clean for bronze!
But the atmosphere is like this.

A reminder to brighten your day: Kazuki Tomono, who competed in NHK as 2nd alternate this season, will get 2 GP assignments next season thanks to his 5th-place finish at Worlds.
I did NOT see this coming! Daisuke Takahashi announced today that he intends to return to competitive competition. He says that while working for the broadcast of last season’s nationals, he was moved by seeing the skaters compete and wants to skate in that environment again.
Rika Hongo graduated from university today!
As for skating, she said there have been periods when she wondered whether she should continue, but since she’s come this far, she wants to keep going. She plans to continue training in Canada.
Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi take home their first National championship title!👏👏👏
And Daisuke has the rare honor of having national titles in two disciplines.

Ice dancer Chris Reed, who represented Japan at 3 Olympic Games, passed away on March 15th from sudden cardiac death. He was 30 years old.
My thoughts are with his loved ones during this terrible time.
Rika missed her planned opening 3A3T, so she improvised a 3A2T next. This meant she needed to switch her planned 3Lz2T to 3Lz3T to avoid too many 2T.
This change is even more impressive when you realize that normally NEITHER of her programs contain a 3Lz3T. SP combo is 3F3T.
Yuzuru Hanyu has been announced as a brand ambassador for Kose’s Sekkisei skin care brand.
He appears in a new commercial for it that will start airing in Japan from the 14th.
Congratulations to Kaori Sakamoto on her graduation!
She also received the University President’s Award for her achievements in sports as a student.
She said the 4.5 years she spent at university went by quickly.
She’ll now focus on competing, aiming for Milan 2026.
Javier Fernandez has been announced as one of the competitors for Japan Open 2019! (Note: Remember, JO is pro-am, so skaters retired from amateur competition also appear there.)
Shoma Uno announced on his Now Voice channel that his free skate for 2022-23 is “Air on the G String,”choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto.
(Another song is also included, but the pronunciation is difficult, so he didn’t say its title.)
People holding up signs that say “UNFAIR JUDGEMENT” as the anthem plays for Nathan. 😬
You know, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the ISU could someday ban fan signs and banners if people make a habit of using them for purposes other than cheering skaters on.
This is a well-known gag that a Japanese comedian does on TV a lot (he stomps and everyone jumps like he made the ground move). I love Shoma spinning around to see if everyone did their part. 😂
Mai Mihara, who’s currently in her fourth year of university, announced her post-graduation plans on the Sysmex skating account:
She’s been accepted to Konan University’s graduate school! 🎉
She plans to continue balancing skating and her studies.
Rika Kihira landed 14 3A today—and did a variety of jumps totaling more than 50 in around a 90-minute practice, including a free skate run through. 😳 I hope the jumps come out well in competition, too!
Shoma Uno confirmed that the plan is for Stephane Lambiel to sit with him in the K&C at Rostelecom (he spent the last week training with Lambiel).
Note that this article only referred to this week’s competition—what Shoma’s planning for the rest of the season is still unknown.
I wish I could lend her some health. 😢 I wonder when we’ll get to see Mai skate again. I hope it’s soon, but only if she’s feeling much better....
#GetWellSoonMai
From the upcoming season, Rika Kihira will receive coaching from Brian Orser. Mie Hamada will continue as her main coach.
When immigration restrictions are lifted, Rika will go to begin training at Toronto Cricket Club.
She will train in both Canada and Japan.

JSF announced that Shoma Uno decided not to compete in 2020 Four Continents Championships. Kazuki Tomono will attend in his place.
It’s also officially confirmed that Stéphane Lambiel is Shoma’s new coach.
⚠️Shoma Uno announced that next season he plans to compete without a main coach. His training base will be Chukyo University and Takeshi Honda will be his jump coach.
Shoma said he doesn’t feel much anxiety, and he thinks he can do it by himself.
Tickets for Mao Asada’s upcoming tour are around $35~$75. Most ice shows in Japan are $80~$250. Mao said she priced her tour so that families could attend together. 💗

Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova will appear together in a commercial for Japanese smartphone game Magia Record, which will start airing this month in Japan. Alina filmed a commercial for the same game last year.
Kaori Sakamoto said to reporters at Dreams on Ice that she’s working on 3A and 4Lo—yes, the article says loop, not toe loop—and it says although she’s not successful yet, she said she feels she’s making more progress than before.
Japanese skater Rika Hongo has announced her retirement from competitive skating. Wishing her the best!
Rika is a two-time Four Continents bronze medalist, a national silver medalist, and 2014 Rostelecom Cup gold medalist. She returned to competition last season after time off.
Good news! Mai Mihara’s coach, Sonoko Nakano, revealed that, after about a month off, Mai returned to training a few days ago.
Nakano said Mai has regained much of her lost weight. Mai hasn’t restarted difficult jumps yet, but she’s aiming for Kinki regionals in October. 💕
Satoko with a lunge (left, Bavarian Open) or Satoko with a spiral (right, Japanese Nationals)?
(Final spin included because there’s never a bad time to watch Satoko Miyahara’s layback.)
The long version of Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova’s new Japanese commercial for a smartphone game!
Several shorter versions and some behind-the-scenes footage can be seen here:
