As a black woman on a national science show, I intentionally wear braids and my curly Afro to normalize black hair in stem. In this pic, I’m wearing cornrows to study plants being sent to space at NASA.
You can be BOTH 🌟. In 2019, I made history as the first Black woman to represent Ireland at
@MissUniverse
. I also am a systems engineer working in the space industry and as a correspondent on a national science tv show

So I’m tuning in this am to

about their experiences growing up as mixed race (b&w) women. As someone who also grew up navigating being mixed race w/my Black identity, I ❤️ this convo.

is the youngest person to receive the title of Honorary Fellow of Engineers Ireland. Honorary Fellowship is the highest honour, other than Presidency, that Engineers Ireland can bestow. Congratulations Fionnghuala on this wonderful achievement.
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and learning from several NASA astronauts, to now include active NASA astronaut Kayla Barron. Hearing the stories of their careers, journeys to space, and values, goals, and leadership styles has been incredibly inspiring.
A little background behind this day at NASA: as a science communicator & tv correspondent, I interview some impressive women in stem about the highs and lows of their careers. It got emotional with a scientist I met who is one of veryyy few Black horticulturists at the agency🧵
Celebrating 45 years of Mu Delta and my 10 year anniversary as a member of the first historically Black sorority, the one and only, Alpha Kappa Alpha 🫶🏽💕💚
Growing up, I ran track & cross country, but I’ve never taken on a distance like this. This was a big bucket list item for me, & I’m so happy I was able to complete my goal 🙌🏽 Training for this took a huge time commitment & getting past nerves I may not be able to run the 26.2 mi
I’ve seen in a few articles about me that have listed me as a scientist. I am a systems engineer and data scientist—which is actually a technologist. I know, totally confusing 😅😂, but in stem it’s important to be accurate.
I can’t tell you how much of a pleasure it was to meet former
@NASA
astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle at

. Dr. Cagle is just 1 of 6 African American female astronauts.
You know what I love about my jobs in
#stem
? No one expects a sassy black girl in the beauty world to care or know much about science and space. Being underestimated is an opportunity.

If you need some motivation to get started on your next project or to just take a leap of faith, I have a few words for you: “Better to do something imperfectly than do nothing flawlessly.”
I started working in fashion as a teen. When I began working as an engineer & w/NASA, I got told to tone it down. Well, I didn’t. Thank you
@washingtonian
for listing me on the 2022 list of “DC’s most fashionable people”. Girls can be as equally stylish as they are smart.
Hello to all of my new followers! Delighted that I was able to share my story on the

📣Tune in tomorrow!📣 When I was in high school, a teacher changed the trajectory of my life by introducing me to stem and coding. I recently visited a teacher who is doing the same for the next generation
@CBSUnstoppable
There are moments when my two cultures intersect. This is exactly what happened at a recent event I hosted as a (newly minted) Next-Gen Leader with the White House Historical Association
@WhiteHouseHstry
It’s important for me to advocate for others bc of my own experiences at the intersection of many demographics. I’ve recently received this Certificate of Recognition from NY State Senator Timothy Kennedy. I’m delighted others see the value in our community’s changing landscape.
As a Black woman, I’ve learned the power and importance of holding space for each other and our stories. The only seats at the table reserved for us, are the ones we bring ourselves.
Stem education opens students up to a world of opportunities 👩🏽🔬🧬🔭 Teachers can use resources from

No 2 stories are the same, but most are alike in that they have experienced the impact of the overview effect which ultimately shows us that we are more connected in the world than we sometimes think 🌍🫶🏾

I’d rather see organizations share what they are actively doing to disrupt unjust systems. I want to see their data on inclusion initiatives and not just pictures of diverse smiling faces on their social media pages.
I’m in
#DC
. I live downtown. This violence, this chaos is disgraceful. Our city is being terrorized. Today, a man followed me, yelled at me, & chased me down because I wore a mask while on a jog. This has completely gone to far.
#DCProtests
I’ve been asking everyone around me what their 1 word for the new year is. If you had to pick a word to describe your 2023, what would you choose? My word is nurture.
I think a lot of people have a hard time fitting me into a box. Beauty queen? Engineer? Advocate? Is she gunna drop her makeup routine or tell me about NASA’s next mission to the moon? Honestly, probably both 😂. Preferably at the same time if I can manage it 💁🏽♀️.
