Delighted to have been elected as the Under-18s Officer of
@SDLPyouth
.
Young people are the future of our society and it’s important they are properly represented and treated with respect.
Congratulations to
@aoibhs_kennedy
on becoming the new Chair.
Our work starts now.
Confusing how people are trying to deny that there was a pile on, just read some of the vile and sectarian comments being made on this platform?
If Sinn Fein failed to win the seat, that is something for their campaign to reflect on, it’s no one else’s fault.
Belfast has sent a clear message.
Fascists out.
Racists out.
Islamophobes out.
This is our community and those who seek to destroy it with violence and hatred are not welcome.
Incredible ! Over 100 residents from lower Ormeau have intercepted the anti-immigration parade and chased them from the area. Chants of nazi scum
@BelTel
Our city triumphing over Fascism.
Our city triumphing over Racism.
Our city triumphing over Islamophobia.
Those who seek to divide us with hatred and intimidation are not welcome.
The racist and derogatory comments below this post and countless others relating to Lilian’s appointment as Mayor of Derry and Strabane are disgusting.
We cannot let this type of hostility exist in our societies, we must fight it.
I’m delighted to see Lilian Seenoi Barr become Mayor of Derry and Strabane tonight.
She’ll be a fantastic First Citizen, for all our city and district.
I’m honoured to be in the chamber tonight to witness history being made.
‘What we really need here tonight, from this Council, is a united message of condemnation for what happened on Saturday.’
‘Tonight let’s send a message that Belfast is a city rich in its diversity and that we are proud of it.’

Proud to be supporting
@Foodstock__
in West Belfast, as a member of the 110th Belfast Explorers.
Now more than ever, it’s vital that we help organisations like Foodstock, who support those within our communities facing difficulties.
‘A crowd joining in on a chant encouraging incitement: “Sink the boats.” That is not legitimate protest’
‘To be so open in their attempt to drive people out of this city; that is not legitimate.’

Belfast City Council
After the days events, we all need to remember:
- The real and present danger far-right agitators pose to our communities.
- The need to be united in our stance against the rising tide of racism, fascism and islamophobia.
- The fact that those people will never prevail.
Just a note of commendation to
@ClaireHanna
, who wrote back lovely responses to letters sent by Young Scouts regarding environmental concerns in Lough Neagh.
It’s the small acts as well as the big ones that make a really great MP 👏
Once more the UK government demonstrates that Northern Ireland is not a priority, not even a place they understand or care about.
A New Ireland is the only way forward.
The UK government said it will not be providing funding to redevelop Casement Park stadium in time for Belfast to host a game in the Euro 2028 football tournament:
I dearly hope Sinn Fein and the DUP have reflected after such moving deputations.
As a Sólás staff member, I could not urge more how important this funding is and how it will support countless children and families.
Very powerful deputations from Sólás parents Jean and Emily about the dire need for support for SEN children in Belfast. The SDLP support them 100% and will be back a restoration of the £800k proposed funding. The DUP/SF should not carry through this 97% cut.
Class tour of Stormont with the 110th Belfast Explorers.
Huge note of thanks to
@MatthewOToole2
’s Office for organising this tour, namely
@FinnDoire
who was up at the crack of dawn getting things sorted for us.
Hopefully the chamber will soon become busy again…
Huge thank you to all those who came down to support our coffee morning, raising almost £1000 for two outstanding charities.
We will continue pushing for donations online, a link can be found in my pinned tweet, as we head towards Marathon Day!
Already a fierce advocate for the people of South Belfast and Mid Down,
@ClaireHanna
would undoubtedly be a strong, positive and historic leader of the SDLP.
BREAKING: Claire Hanna is on course to be the next SDLP leader as Colum Eastwood steps down. Only Hanna & the party’s 8 MLAs are eligible to run. Sources say she will stand & there is unanimous support for her among the party's Stormont team.
After last tonight’s devastating 60% cut to Sólás, a new fundraiser has been launched to try and help towards our new building.
All support appreciated.
Fascinating talk from
@ClaireHanna
, telling the 110th Explorers all about Government at Westminster and her role as our local MP.
Huge thank you to her for coming down and participating in our UK Parliament Week Night.
2024 Marathon over!
Proud to be out today supporting the NI Children’s Hospice and the 110th St. Bernadette’s Scout Group, having raised close to £3500.
Congratulations to all those who participated, especially my Aquinas colleagues raising money for NI Kidney Research Fund.
Let’s stop pretending that children receiving an education is some sort of political ‘move’ or ‘threat.
Just because you don’t speak the language doesn’t mean you have to oppose it.
Support Scoil na Seolta.
Best weather in a long time to mark the first day of my work experience with Claire!
Get out to vote on the 4th July and elect an MP who works for you!
Started the door knocking this evening with Birthday Cake, to mark my latest spin around the sun. Yeses only on the canvass please Carryduff - or else belated cards with Xs sent via your polling station on 4 July 😇🎂
We need your help!
The 110th Belfast Explorers are running our second annual fundraiser, seeking to support the NI Children's Hospice and our very own Explorer Division.
Any support you can give will go towards securing the future of these two charities.
On Saturday
@ClaireHanna
will officially become the next Leader of the SDLP.
Claire’s politics is rooted in hope, ambition and bringing people together.
This is an exciting time to get involved in our mission to build something new. We hope you’ll join us!
I’m proud, along with countless others across South Belfast and Mid Down, to call Claire Hanna my MP.
Anyone with a spare time each week should get in contact and lend a hand!
Big thanks to volunteers seasoned and new who joined us in Carryduff this afternoon. We were blown away by both the responses & the wind! And the craic was good in the Ivanhoe after 😊 We knock doors regularly to hear from constituents - drop me a line if you fancy being involved
Paul Doherty never stops working for people in West Belfast.
We are delighted to announce that he will be our candidate in the Westminster election on 4th July.
@PaulDoherty___
No matter the date of the election, the people of South Belfast and Mid Down have an outstanding MP, who defends our interests locally and nationally.
Get involved in the campaign to re-elect Claire Hanna below!
As your MP, I’ve tried to represent you with courage, conviction and compassion on the issues that matter to all of us.
I’m standing for re-election and asking people in South Belfast and Mid Down to put their faith in me again.
Get involved here :
Utterly disgraceful plans of the DUP and Sinn Fein.
This is not only damaging to Sólás itself, but will have a huge effect on the children being supported.
Shame to those involved.
Got in touch with multiple residents of Sandy Row who are terrified to leave their homes.
Is this the ‘legitimate concerns’ mentioned in the Council tonight?
Parties and individuals who excused these actions must be held responsible.
An attempt to re-torch the supermarket tonight, thwarted by police here in Sandy Row as disorder continues.
Riot police extinguished the fire with water and fire extinguishers
@BelTel
Needless to say, if it wasn’t for the public outcry, SF and the DUP wouldn’t have agreed to compromise.
It’s a political decision to protect themselves, not a moral one or they would’ve agreed to the proposed amount.
Update: Sólás is to get £300,000 of council funding, councillors have decided in a meeting of
@belfastcc
. Not the £800k originally proposed, but a compromise..
Delighted to be attending this historic summit.
#OYW23
Many thanks to the Lisburn and Castlereagh Youth Council Team and
@aquinasgrammar
for facilitating.
Back in the Markets, with teams in Finaghy, Malone & Carryduff for last-night conversations with South Belfast & Mid Down voters.
At 7am it’s over to them. Been an honour to serve as MP & to campaign relentlessly the last 6 weeks with the most incredible group of volunteers.
Honoured to present our Fundraising cheque for
@NIHospice
to Michael Nugent.
It’s vital that we all step up to support charities like the Hospice, in whatever way we can.
A huge thank you to all those who contributed and gave us such powerful support.
The destruction of Gaza must end.
There is no moral or just opposition to an immediate ceasefire and an international end of arms sales to Israel.
The genocide must stop.
A lasting peace must begin.
Representing South Belfast & Mid Down is my passion & my vocation. I want to be able to keep putting the dynamism and values of this vibrant constituency at the heart of local politics.
To do that, I need your X vote on Thursday. Let’s keep moving forward together.
Will Polland has been selected as the SDLP candidate in Strangford for the Westminster election.
Will is part of a new generation of SDLP activists ready to step up and champion their local communities.
The SDLP are taking the moral and the right decision.
SF planning to attend the White House highlights that they want to keep relations with the USA for when they enter the Southern Government.
They are putting politics over people.
What’s happening in Gaza is a genocide and the response of the international community is heinously deficient.
I can’t in good conscience attend White House parties, rub shoulders and drink Guinness while the horrifying impacts of this brutal war continue.
Wake up call for Sinn Fein and the DUP, who must now be held accountable by the public for their actions.
It’s said that politics is tough, but cutting funding to a charity who support children with additional needs isn’t tough, it’s cruel.
"You shouldn't take from the most vulnerable - that is just not acceptable."

@MatthewOToole2
@ClaireHanna
is an MP for the people and constantly defends the interests of the people.
WE24 could be the first election I ever cast a vote in, and there’s nobody more deserving of it.
Today the Offshore Petroleum Licensing Bill comes before WM.
@ClaireHanna
MP has opposed the Bill which does nothing to cut people's energy costs & worsens the climate breakdown. UK gov must stop appeasing wealthy companies & invest in improving the wellbeing of people & planet.
Every representative across this region should be jumping to offer a condemnation of these attacks.
But yet there has been many who have remained silent. Why?
Why refuse to categorically condemn acts of terror and violence against innocent members of our communities?
"Nothing left, Just ashes" - Supermarket owner Bashir tells how his shop was destroyed last night as rioting broke out in Sandy Row.
Cars were burnt and businesses torched when an anti-immigration protest turned to chaos.
@BelTel
It’s all too common to see the Stormont benches practically empty, even when key topics are up for debate.
Quality and consistency of representation are vitally important and SDLP MPs and MLAs demonstrate this every day, both in Stormont and Westminster.
#VoteSDLP
@CJM926260
This is the ‘blue benches’ at Stormont this afternoon, for a motion about cross border co-operation on health. Where’s all your sneery tweets about that? Presumably MLAs should abstain from there as well, by your logic?
Cllr Séamas de Faoite has been selected as the SDLP candidate in East Belfast for the Westminster election.
@SeamasBelfast
has been a voice for a changing community in East Belfast. He’ll be a powerful, progressive advocate for people from every background.
It’s truly saddening to hear of the death of Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union Archbishop Noël Treanor.
Back in my Altar Server days, I had the privilege of meeting him many times as our Bishop.
His commitment and service will be fondly remembered.
These far-right ‘patriots’ claim to be fighting a just cause.
In reality they are damaging property, attacking the police and terrifying residents.
The people of Southport are mourning, they shouldn’t have to endure dangerous right-wing aggression too.
The SDLP has selected Cara Hunter as our candidate in East Derry in the Westminster election.
Cara has been an outstanding advocate for a new generation. She would be an incredible MP for people in every community.
Fantastic morning in west Belfast for the opening of SDLP councillor
@PaulDoherty___
new constituency office on the Andersonstown Road.
Paul works tirelessly on behalf of the local community and the SDLP is determined to build a better future for families here.
A frightening but moving episode of Spotlight where
@mandy_mcauley
highlights the grip paramilitaries drug gangs have on some of our communities.
More must urgently be done to combat these gangs and protect young people from turning to criminality out of fear and desperation.
“When the bulk of the people in this area do not share an affinity with Irish culture or Irish language”
Objecting to a Primary School which will help educate our children is a disgrace, especially when the hidden reason is total hostility to the Irish Language.
Hear hear.
People wonder why so many young people move away to Australia, or the States, but really what is the incentive to stay here?
We can’t even maintain government, the bare necessity for a nation to function.
We should be able to take pride in our progress.
I’m 22 and would just like a functioning Stormont Assembly.
I want to be able to have faith that government can work, and work for all the people of this place.
I want people here to see the rewards of the peace era. I want us to have a reason to stay.
Is that too much to ask?
Outstanding to be a part of the Cephas Faith Development Programme, which yesterday won
@aquinasgrammar
the Spirit of Catholic Education Award.
The work we undertook to create our Assisi Garden is so key within our school community, and will continue on for years to come.
Year after year, what could be a cultural celebration quickly becomes a show of sectarian bigotry.
We all have a duty to not only condemn these actions, but to work to prevent them occurring in the future.
All of our politicians have to stand against this.
After being directly threatened, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood says: "I won't be intimidated by anyone from speaking up for the people of Derry and Northern Ireland."
➡️
The SDLP will undoubtedly deliver a vigorously opposition, scrutinising all parties within the Executive.
It’s time we challenge inequalities, call out injustices, and legislate to protect all people from this cost of living crisis.
Our party’s work begins now.
A United Ireland will not be achieved through Sinn Fein scraping victory in one seat.
It will be obtained through open dialogue in spaces like the
@NewIrelandComm
.
The GFA states: ‘whatever choice is freely exercised by a majority of the people’ not by an extra SF seat.
@DHamill2004
A total cutting of ties with Washington wasn’t my point.
I am saying that SF is attending the White House St Paddies events because they lack the courage to stand up to the USA and believe future diplomacy is more important than human lives right now.
Delighted to become a member of
@lisburnccc
Youth Council.
Looking forward to ensuring Young People across my area and beyond have their voices and concerns heard.
What sort of headline is this?
The Belfast News letter must apologise immediately to
@Lseenoi
, a hardworking Mayor for the people of Derry and Strabane.
Fantastic night at the 110th Belfast Explorers Quiz.
Huge thank you to everyone who came down to support us, and participated in an absolutely class quiz.
Below is a link to our GoFundMe page, where we are raising money for two charities which help shape the lives of young people across Northern Ireland.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Zac, do you not think the recent decisions regarding funding from Westminster prove the need to have open discussions regarding a New Ireland and whether we would be better within one?
Society is far too exclusive for our elderly population, they are our past and they deserve respect.
It’s everyone’s duties including Ryanair to be accommodating
This is disgraceful.
Email, SMS.. We must have a political conversation about ensuring protections for the elderly from mandatory digital actions, policies, digital banking and this obvious slow push towards a cashless society which leaves the vulnerable behind.
