I've written a lot of stuff about sustainability in football - and there are a lot of well-meaning initiatives.
But there's always an elephant in the room: short-haul flights.
Last night, after beating Newcastle, Liverpool took a 33-minute flight home.
Chelsea are flying from London to Leicester today - a journey of 105 miles.
The train from St Pancras to Leicester takes just over an hour.
Chelsea played at home against Dortmund on Tuesday. They have no excuse for this one.
The Matt Le Tissier interview in The Times is, on the whole, maddening. But the way he describes himself as a non-conformist by *checks notes* talking about the fact he drinks Malibu and coke instead of lager is genuinely hilarious.
Pep Guardiola is unhappy Man City can't fly back from Newcastle tonight
His comments underline the Premier League addiction to short-haul flights
They're 25-30 times worse for the environment than driving
Alex McCarthy by the way.
Not only does he make amazing saves he makes tactical decisions too. Clonks Jan Bednarek out cold in the heat of battle to get Manolo Gabbiadini on to score the winner. Genius.

These sorts of flights happened every weekend in the Premier League.
Liverpool finished top of the BBC's sustainability league last year, yet winning matches trumps all else.
They choose the ease of a private flight to save a three-hour drive
On the one hand, Liverpool can trumpet the news that they are "the first Premier League club to be awarded the British Standards Institute certificate for sustainability"
On the other they will continue to take unnecessary flights for performance reasons
Obviously this is not just about Liverpool.
Nottingham Forest received some negative press for taking a 20-minute flight to Blackpool - just after extending an agreement with EON to "raise awareness of the climate crisis".
Steve Cooper's response was telling.
This is why initiatives like the recent Green Football Weekend one need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
There is a complete lack of joined-up thinking between the football side of clubs and the operations side.
I spoke to the former youth coaches of Ibrahima Konate (Paris FC) and Luis Diaz (Atletico Junior) to learn about their pathways to the Champions League final.
Everyone will remember the 9-0s.
But Ralph Hasenhuttl also beat Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham with

He kept them in the Premier League for four straight seasons, despite many limitations.
His time is up, but he undoubtedly did a good job.

CEO Martin Semmens hailed their arrival as the "perfect solution" because they have a "clear understanding" of how to push the club on.
Southampton are bottom of the Premier League and have won 8/36 league games since.
@ScouseRunner
Indeed. And like I say, lots of teams do the same thing. I am not singling Liverpool out. We might find out the circumstances - I have asked the club for comment
Lovely to see so much interest in sustainability in football!
Here is the story about what happened. Liverpool decided to take the flight home for performance reasons ahead of their Champions League tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
A reminder: this isn't about Chelsea.
These sorts of flights are commonplace in the Premier League.
They happen every single weekend.
Many have no real excuse.

I am keen to speak to anyone who was there to get a flavour of what it was like to see such a spectacular goal live.

Chelsea's flight from Farnborough to East Midlands Airport yesterday took 35 minutes.
They travelled on Friday, a day before their 3pm kick-off. The performance benefits for their players are surely negligible, compared with the train.

I am no longer freelance. Today is my first day as a national network sports writer with Reach, which means I will be writing for the Mirror, Star and Express.
Thanks to everyone who I've worked with over the past nine months. Excited to start a full-time role.
Think Ralph Hasenhuttl deserves a lot of credit for the past week.
It's been shaky at times, but today, coming from behind against the league leaders with no right-backs, was impressive.
They are playing for him and that's important.

The sight of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo dancing in front of the Atletico Madrid fans, after some of them openly sang racist songs pre-match, was brilliant.

You become so accustomed to seeing Liverpool's forwards bury half-chances that when they miss it really stands out. Darlow was brilliant, but Firmino and particularly Salah, were strangely sloppy in front of goal. My analysis:

What a series. A lot of hype and it didn't disappoint at all: drama aplenty, Virat Kohli proving (as if he needed to) his class, Sam Curran emerging, Alastair Cook bowing out and Jimmy Anderson's perfect ending. Perfect way to finish the summer.

Dread to think what the Government has been putting into our lager to suppress individual thought, while Matt Le Tissier and his merry band of fellow non-conformists have kept their minds clear and unfettered by drinking the purist alcoholic beverage of all: Malibu.
@MikeBorder
It's likely that Chelsea's empty coach drove up separately to pick them up from East Midlands Airport and drive them to their hotel. It will then will take them to the King Power Stadium later today.
To emphasise the point, it appears that Liverpool flew down to Bournemouth yesterday, using the same company as Chelsea.
The flight was 37 minutes.

Did my final shift at BBC Sport last night. I'm moving out of the world of freelancing to join City A.M. as a sports writer from 28 May.
Cheers to everyone at the BBC, I've really enjoyed my time there. Aged 25 it's about time I got a 'proper' job. I'm excited to get started.
The company that is the go-to for Premier League teams wanting to take short-haul flights is called 2Excel Aviation.
Their business is absolutely booming. The demand for their services - which isn't just charter flights, it should be noted - is always increasing.
One of the things that makes Dorking so interesting is the YouTube series about them, made by

Could take the train. Could take the team coach. But no, we'll fly.
Sure Man City would point to the perceived performance benefit for their players. But they last played five days ago. It's ridiculous.

Really good research from the BBC into the Premier League's domestic flight problem.
The detail about 'positioning' flights is particularly interesting as it shows just how unnecessary the whole thing is

Lots of them do take coaches and trains. The majority of journeys are done that way - but there is still a problem with too many short-haul flights, which are 25 to 30 times worse for the environment

fans saw Sport Republic's strategy in action over the summer when they bought in 10 players with an average age of 21.4.
They were the equivalent of small bets.
They now need to lay some bigger ones in the January transfer window to protect their investment.
