's response to this crisis in our new report:
🧵 The re-writing of recent history by global north activists on the COP27 and its outcome is (to put it mildly) nauseating! It makes one question their independence and how much they're in touch with Global South voices they claim to care about. So to reclaim the space:
A response that can't be repeated enough. Also, Africa loses $88B+ annualy to outflows involving international actors! Plus, judging by the sheer scale of the recent bribery scandal in the heart of Europe's legislative body, is anyone now saying Europe isn't investable?
3. The cherry on the cake for many of us was hearing western leaders, one after one, repeating their "disappointment" for the "failure" to secure commitment to 1.5. So to be clear: they need to tell that to themselves, not lecture the global south! Refresh on emission increases:
@ragipsoylu
@HamdiBaala
Why did he even accept such conditions at a moment his people are being murdered! At THE moment he needs to retain his voice! Accept to be silenced in exchange of a VISA?
This is the trend in Africa on transition minerals. The DRC passed a similar law end of 2022. Zimbabwe, too. Good start but do we have plans (incl regional) on how we will approach the processing? (Not rethorical q, really interested in analysis on this).
...hear a lot about the lack of delivery and no word on who is to blame! So let's say it: the historical polluters have failed us! We could have had a HUGE success had the pressure to deliver on pledges and add to them been duly put on them! Instead, we got empty rhetoric!
Within 2 weeks after the
#COP27
where industrialised countries (notably the EU, UK and US) lectured the world on emissions targets and 1.5C, this happened: Germany signed a gas deal w Qatar, France rebooted coal-fired plant and UK gave green light for new one. So, a reminder 👇

1. The 2 weeks in Sharm were a moment; a stop in a journey. The COP27 outcomes need to be evaluated based on the engagement of the actors through that journey! Ignoring that the US and the EU were telling us just a month ago that loss and damage won't happen and then reading...

🧵 On how this is actually a geopolitical loss for the EU.
1) 35 countries, mainly in Africa and the Caribbean (two key trade regions within the ACP) did NOT sign the agreement (that’s 45% of the ACP membership).
A historic day for the EU and African, Caribbean & Pacific States.
We've signed the new Samoa agreement to better tackle global challenges together.

WILL face an economic crisis in 2022. But it has nothing to do with the current popular movement. The real reason is 2 decades of grossly incompetent and corrupt leadership and economic mismanagement. Here is a factual thread.
#Africa
"Not all climate action is climate justice" - Vanessa Nakate articulated this point unambiguously in this interview. This is why an African, and indeed a global South perspective on climate-related action should be put central in international debates.
Africa as a commodity producer. Not more. The EU has made it clear that, rethoric on industrialisation aside, it mainly wants commodities (hydrogen, critical minerals). Will we make our interests clear and fight for them?
Africa isn’t alone though. Even countries like Brazil 1/3
Germany will support the joint Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative with 4 billion Euro by 2030.
Our clear message to the Compact with Africa countries: Produce green hydrogen - and you will have reliable customers in us!
With the
#NairobiDeclaration
now approved, some highlights of key affirmations in this declaration.
1. CBDR remains at the centre of Africa’s position.
2. Integration of climate-related trade measures (eg the likes of

) gives finally a clear signal that Africa isn’t happy
What is it about Kenya gifting the continent with some of the most dedicated climate activists? Meet the

I sometimes hear claims that "no African country" has an underground metro. That's incorrect. Cairo had the first underground metro (1987) and Algiers built one in 2011 (pictured).
Africa has become acceptable collateral damage to score geopolitical points. My latest piece on the signals we're seeing ahead of the
#COP27
and why they're concerning for the multilateral process all together.
Facebook 'apology roadshow' will go to Europe, Asia, Australia. Despite the revelations of Cambridge Analytica on election meddling in Kenya and Nigeria, there seems to be no need to apologize to African FB users? Or is it about who FB thinks they're in trouble with?

🧵Some reflections on the just agreed GST text at

1. The text is clearly a compromise text. Everyone can claim a win. There’s something for every delegation to take back home. The presidency has in this sense delivered on the spirit of a consensus-based UN process.

My thoughts for
@mailandguardian
Nothing gets me more excited than Africans (from civil society to governments) organising themselves on international issues and defining an agenda rather than waiting for others to do it for us. The opposite applies! We can be masters of our right to initiative. Let's own that!
🚨 This is my last day with the

A fantastic piece that explains the EU's own climate finance predicament (and why measures such as tax have become so sexy and an integral element of the EU negotiating positions on climate finance).
The EU wants to be a global "climate leader" by introducing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. But our modelling finds that the CBAM will negatively affect African countries, especially if put in the context of limited energy transition funding
"North Africans have been embracing their Africanness in opposition to Arabness, often citing Arab racism and exclusionary politics as reasons to depart from that historical bond. The current Algerian and Sudanese uprisings have offered some examples."

Some context:
- Africa attracts only 2% of global investments in renewable energy
- The total installed cost for wind in Africa is the highest in the world
- Cost of capital for African countries is prohibitive + interest rates increasing
All with unmet climate finance targets
If Hoekstra is confirmed to replace Timmermans, it would mean that the new EU climate chief:
1. is an ex-Shell
2. as per a parliamentary investigation early this year was opposed to stopping gas exploitation in the North of the Netherlands (he still wanted to get money out)
#Hoekstra
gets green light from Von Der Leyen to replace Timmermans as EU Climate Chief (appointment hoped ti be confirmed in time for
