A listener sent me this quote this morning. I've referenced it a couple of times and have been asked to tweet it. So, here it is. I think it's rather perfect.
"To the privileged, inconvenience feels like oppression."
No launch party. No finale party. No big events. And in the height of a pandemic. Yet still, Waterloo Region helped the
#Farwell4Hire
campaign soar to new heights, raising $160,588 this year. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the support.
8 years. 9 campaigns. About 300 days. More than 1000 odd jobs. And with more than $186,000 raised this May, ONE COMMUNITY has raised more than ONE MILLION DOLLARS in the fight against
#cysticfibrosis
. You're a beautiful place, Waterloo Region.

This is worth considering. Nobody is denying your right to protest. But what's happening now, 12 days in Ottawa and a blockade of the Ambassador Bridge, is, frankly, embarrassing. And eroding any wider support for the movement there may have been.
I love how this keeps falling back on us, and our behaviours. In the past 21 months, did the government increase healthcare capacity? Provide high quality PPE and rapid tests to any Ontarian who needed them? Prepare adequately to administer the 3rd doses we knew we'd need?
Chapman's was paying to have unvaccinated workers tested. So, with money being spent there, the company decided to give vaccinated workers a $1/hr raise. And then the mobs emerge and call for a boycott of the family-run business. Moral of the story? Buy some Chapman's ice cream.
Chapman's Ice Cream is giving fully vaccinated employees a pay raise at the end of the month, but some anti-vaccine groups are now calling for a boycott of the Canadian company.
Three weeks, collections from more than 200 homes, a five-hour drop-off day, and $16,671 in beer, wine, and liquor empties. With cash donations of $3833.50 included, our
#Farwell4Hire
bottle drive raised $20,504.50. That's a lot of empties...
Took a picture of my car before leaving for work this morning. Because this is the sort of morning that needs to be etched forever in the archives of the interwebs. May 11, 2020.
Shout out to
@DTKitchener
. Foolishly left my phone, wallet, and keys on a table outside city hall yesterday. Went back a half hour later, frantic, and someone had turned it all in to the security desk. Thank you, friends, for the reminder we live in a special place.
#DTKLove
A week ago, we were $25,000 shy of our goal. I figured I had enough work booked to earn $15k. Turns out I got just over $17k...and you came through with the rest, another $13,000 to push us over the top. Thank you for not letting me fail.

We interrupt this Saturday to let you know that Waterloo Region, in raising more than $383,000, was the TOP COMMUNITY IN CANADA FOR THIS YEAR'S WALK TO MAKE CYSTIC FIBROSIS HISTORY!!! Sorry for shouting but, DAMN, you're awesome. Or, in this case, Number One. In Canada.

BREAKING: for the past four weeks,

has been quietly providing meals to frontline workers. Today, they quietly (but I'm saying it LOUDLY) made a $5000 (FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR) donation to

after "hiring" me to deliver those meals.

You've probably seen this by now but, since I received it this weekend from a local pharmacist, and since as of Tuesday you can get the AstraZeneca vaccine in Ontario if you're over the age of 40, this seems like a good time to remind you. Have a great day.
My city just invested more than $500,000 to create a team for anti-racism and equity. Municipalities can do this work. It's called leadership, and it's fucking awesome.
We just counted down to 2020 as a team, on-board the Kitchener Rangers bus returning home after a win in Erie. Yes, there are more glamorous places to be on New Year's Eve but I wouldn't trade my good health and my loved ones at home for anything. Have a fantastic next 365 days!
I'm a big fan of how Bell gets us talking today about the critical issues around our mental health. But let's remember to use this as a springboard to normalizing these conversations EVERY day. Deal?
Meantime, over

..."In recent years, it had become painfully evident that our decision not to fly the Pride flag was sending the wrong message; namely, SJU was not a welcoming space for people who identified as LGBTQ+."
The Pride flag will be raised at SJU on Monday.
We didn't lose Snow Days when some boards replaced them with "Virtual Learning Days." We lost Snow Days when we started declaring 5-10 cm of snow a Snow Day. Poor kids today have no idea...
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board's decision to create its own flag is almost the polar opposite of inclusion. By creating its own flag, the Board is saying "we accept you...but on our terms." We need to speak up about this.
Final point. If I invite 10 people to my house for a party and 110 people show up, make a mess, and vandalize property, that is MY responsibility. With apologies to Laurier, the "out of town students" narrative has got to stop. It's your party. Be accountable for it.

It's not often that the
#Farwell4Hire
campaign continues so deep into June. Today, I take a moment to pause and remember why I'm doing it. Twenty-nine years ago, my sister Sheri lost her battle with CF. I refuse to quit until we have a cure. And we're close. My god, we're close.
From about 8:30 Monday morning to about 5:30 Tuesday afternoon. That's how long it took to go from notice of exposure to receipt of results. I was tested within about 90 minutes of receiving the alert. Let's hear it for the hard work being done across our healthcare system.
Park your partisanship. I've known Mike since he started Sustainable Waterloo Region. He's a really good human. This is a terrific result for Kitchener-Centre...or any riding, for that matter. Mike Morrice will make an excellent MP.
Just finished my last show of 2020. For the next 11 days, I'll be at home. Like, right at home. Outside to play with the dogs and take walks. That's it. We've ordered groceries and we're settling in. Hoping you'll consider doing the same. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
The results are in!
Your generous support of our 10th annual
#Farwell4Hire
fundraising campaign has helped us raise more than $200,000 for

As it turns out, the health minister is in Kitchener today. I hope she spends six minutes listening to this before her remarks later this morning. I hope you can find six minutes to listen to it as well. It's important.

Ontario's approach to the pandemic, to date, has been to slowly move back to the same half-measures that haven't worked in the past. It would be utterly fascinating if it wasn't so damn infuriating.

To be honest, staying at home hasn't bothered me a whole lot. It's safe, it's warm, and I have a world of entertainment at my fingertips. I know this places me among the lucky ones. I also know I regret watching Tiger King. I really wish I hadn't watched Tiger King.

Let's start our week on an agreeable note. We ALL agree that drive-thrus should operate like express checkout lanes at the grocery store, right? There MUST be maximum items allowed for a single order. More than 3? Sorry, you're going inside. Or, we get rid of drive-thrus.
Police and city workers are on scene here on Ezra Avenue, bracing for an unsanctioned street party for St. Patrick's Day. Precautions, signs and hand sanitizer is all in place too. More this AM on

I'll just be over here, making friends.
The pinned tweet, by the way, was a quote shared with me that reads "To the privileged, inconvenience feels like oppression."
Maybe I'll just pin this tweet instead...
Hey Mike, just wanted to put this here and tell you how much I hate what you’ve become. Long past time to take down that abhorrent tweet you have pinned as well.
@farwell_WR
It seems like a good day to remind you that there are a lot of opinions expressed on this platform and, just because my opinion might differ from yours, that doesn't mean you're wrong.
Seven years ago today, a massive fire destroyed the St. Jacobs Market. Seems so recent, and when you look at the market today, the rebound is beyond impressive.
“It's deemed safe to have hundreds of thousands of people going to malls at different parts of the province, yet a drive-thru experience where families are in their own family bubble, inside their own vehicle can’t go through an experience similar to the drive-thru window.”

Build a social media presence for your show, they said. It will be fun, they said. I don't think they've met Todd. Neither have I, for that matter. But Todd wants to be heard and, dammit, I'm here for it!

I must be missing the divisive part. If I were to pick an adjective to describe Gillette's new commercial, I'd pick "hopeful." Not to mention smart, thought-provoking, and in-touch.
Gillette has used the tagline "the best a man can get" since 1989.
The company takes aim at gender stereotypes in a play on this motto in a divisive new commercial.
Overheard from the front row as I prepare to address a group of about 400 public school students this afternoon: "He's short and he doesn't have much hair." Truth bombs.
#BREAKING
- A statement from Premier Fords office says Ford came in contact with the staff member who tested positive for COVID-19. The Premier has tested negative but will isolate following public health advice.
BREAKING:
@ROWPublicHealth
is reporting no new cases of COVID-19, keeping the total to 1,384 in Waterloo Region.
There are 41 active cases of COVID-19.
No new deaths have been reported, with 119 COVID-19 related deaths total.
88% of cases have been resolved.
If you are an elected official, you don't get to answer questions on sunny days only. You also have to answer questions when it rains. Maybe especially when it rains.
I can't believe it's necessary to type this.
Even more interesting, IMO, is that a developer was inquiring about these lands in Wilmot months before we learned about potential expropriation. Developers don't choose random farmland to speculate on, so who tipped off the developer, and does this require an investigation?
@farwell_WR
From an article published today “Agricultural land sells for $35,000 to $60,000 an acre, he said, and shovel-ready industrial land sells for $2 million to $3 million an acre.”
This is the same guy who has sponsored about 100 Syrian families, at a personal cost of more than $1-million, and who has been awarded the Order of Canada. He just doesn't stop.
The same board that said it couldn't possibly afford a democratic byelection three months ago magically finds the money to investigate a fellow trustee for comments he made on my radio show three years ago. You can't make this stuff up.
Waterloo Region's 13th case of COVID-19 is the father of a good friend of mine. He did not travel. His is a case of community transmission. This is real, folks. Let's talk about our socially distant weekends -- and immediate futures -- on
@570NEWS
today. Show starts at 9:00.
It's Friday and I figure it's time for a few incontrovertible truths:
1) Pineapple belongs on pizza 🍍
2) Raisins DO NOT belong in butter tarts
3) Black coffee is the best coffee ☕️
Thanks, and have a great day.
Has anyone thought of asking Rod Phillips to help with Ontario's vaccine rollout? His recent experience in juggling a travel itinerary while simultaneously coordinating the efforts of several staffers to keep his social media "local" while he was getting a tan might prove useful.
So happy to "unofficially" announce Courtney Wilson of Kitchener as the winner of our

We have boards full of education trustees in this province that are largely toothless. We have directors, superintendents, and teachers, making above $100k/yr. And we have a group of educators essential to classroom function that use food banks to bridge bills.
A sincere thank you to everyone who has already reached out about my Uncle Doug. He was as devout a man as you'd find, and his service and deep faith connected him to many in our community. I'll be back at work tomorrow, but today is for family.
My respect level for Rosie just went through the roof. She reads the news like a boss and she just stood up and flossed. On the spot. Me? Well, there's video proof.

A shoutout to my friends in media from across the aisle, too many of whom lost jobs this week. I assure you these were good people, doing good work, and doing it the right way. I thank each of them for that. When a newsroom is gutted, we're all gut-punched.
I'm glad an arrest was made quickly after this incident. But the impact will linger for a very long time. This is just awful stuff. I admire Mifrah's courage. Could you imagine having to confront this?

Bhima's is one of 5 local businesses included on a list of Ontario businesses that have made announcements about their staff's vaccination status. The list is curated here: .
Does this info make you more likely to patronize that business?
I hate being that guy. Honest, I do. But you'd think for a billion dollars, we could get a system that operates in inclement weather. This is the second time this winter.

Ok, this is HUGE. We've surpassed $100,000 in funds raised - during COVID! Our goal was to encourage 1% of Waterloo Region (~6000 ppl) to donate $20 to our campaign. This amount represents 5190, $20 donations. Can we get 810 more by July 1st?

A longtime communications pro in Waterloo Region was fond of saying "if you don't want bad press, don't do stupid things." I think this message needs to be heard today. By a lot of people. Shall I just RT myself tomorrow?
"Don’t tell me about threats to your personal freedom and charter rights. This isn’t about that.
This is about wearing a seatbelt in a moving vehicle, not smoking in public spaces and protecting society’s vulnerable from the most virulent virus in a century."
