After 48 emails we get the grants office to approve the summer undergrad hire I initiated in May. Then HR kicks it back saying I can't pay her more than $12/hr. On. My. Grant. Funding. That costs the university nothing.

Today's stock market losses wiped out $2.2 trillion in value. Last week was $3.8 trillion. Combined budgets for CDC+NIH+NSF are $70 billion. We could fund every government agency 70 times over and it would be cheaper than the costs in stock value. Fund science. It's worth it.

I hate when people rag on students who got good grades, test scores, or class rank. Some of us got A's and studied for exams because we knew that was the only way to get scholarships and make a better path in life than what we had. These judgements are misplaced.

So a reviewer makes repeated claims that do not match with theory, empirical data, and have no supporting citations. We then have to spend months of work proving it wrong, or else have a high risk a paper might be rejected. Something is wrong with that aspect of peer review.
