New followers, welcome! Now that I’m getting new followers on this new account, this is a good time to remind you that I am autistic, and so I tend to speak impulsively and emotionally. I’m not trying to be rude, I just lack social skills. Please don’t be offended.
I’ve been saying this for years. A movie like SPEED would probably go directly to streaming in 2024, and it wouldn’t look as great as this.
We’ve lost so much.
So maybe cinema isn't dead. Maybe audiences simply weren't interested in THE FALL GUY and FURIOSA. Clearly people still show up when they're interested.
So horror fans, help me out. I really enjoyed LONGLEGS and it left me wanting more of that sort of mood/vibe— you know, like, investigations leading to creepy, supernatural elements, ominous atmosphere. That sort of thing. So I’ll take your recommendations, Horror Twitter.
I often think of this clip when I see people on here saying a movie needed to be “20 minutes shorter”, or that a specific scene should have been removed because it had nothing to do with the plot. Ugh.
I totally believe this and I find it so weird. THE MATRIX is a 25 year old movie. When I was a teenager in the 90s, we knew and loved movies that were 30, 40 years old, at least in my experience. The lack of curiosity among young people today is just baffling to me.
I make a Matrix reference in one of my lectures and it's simply now a fact of life that not one single student in any of my classes will ever have seen the Matrix. Zero, every time, no exceptions. Obviously I'm old and washed but damn
This is like doing a HOME ALONE prequel focusing on Kevin McCallister’s years as a toddler. McClane is not a superhero, he doesn’t have or need an origin story. He’s just a divorced dude!
You know, at this point they could do a sequel to THE MUMMY RETURNS with Brendan Fraser, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Rachel Weisz, Oded Fehr, and Patricia Velásquez, and set it during the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. The cast has aged twenty years, so that could work.
Everyone is perfect in their roles in TRUE LIES, but goddamn, Bill Paxton steals the movie, even though he’s only in the second act. He’s such a sleazeball and so adorable at the same time. He’s just a delight. I love Simon, and I miss Bill Paxton.
Studios blew it by making movies available on digital/streaming 45 days after theatrical release, and with the increasing costs of movie theaters, there’s not a lot of incentive for casual audiences to go see a movie in theaters.
BREAKING: Even after heavy promotion, earning rave reviews since its SXSW premiere & RYAN GOSLING stealing the Oscars, “THE FALL GUY” is off to a slow start. It cost $130 mil to make, but it’s projected to make only $28 mil for the w/e. It’s a REALLY FUN MOVIE, but WHAT HAPPENED?
BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE is also nearing $400 million. People still want to go to theaters. But this idea that movies need to make a billion dollars during their first weekend has done great damage to the industry.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes gonna crack $400 million this weekend worldwide. Nice little success story there in terms of a film having a soft opening, but having legs
Speaking of Howard Shore, I've always loved this moment from SE7EN. It just seems to me that, outside his Lord of the Rings scores, the rest of his work is wildly unappreciated, which is a shame.
James Horner's obsession with steel drums in the early 80s always makes me think that COMMANDO takes place in the same universe as the 48 HRS movies. And I mean that as a compliment.
I was at the steakhouse just now, and a young boy at the table next to mine was looking at me— my scars, my damaged eye, and I winked at him. And he smiled and he asked me if I was a viking. That made me laugh because it was so cool that he saw me as a badass.
One movie I wish more people talked about on here is Bill Duke’s DEEP COVER. Not only it is a phenomenal movie, but it’s also gorgeous to look at. I miss the days when movies looked like this.
I very much enjoyed LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND. I love how it wisely stays away from what's going on out there to focus on the confusion, fear, and paranoia of isolated characters. Also, it doesn't waste the opportunity to make a point on how physical media is important.
Richard Linklater’s A SCANNER DARKLY remains the only Philip K. Dick adaptation that accurately replicates the experience of reading a Philip K. Dick book.
Filmmaker mutuals: if I ever catch you saying that your $50 million dollar project is an indie movie, please don’t be offended when I kick you through the fucking door like I’m Wesley Snipes.
I’m roughly the same age as Christopher Lloyd in the first BACK TO THE FUTURE and Ronny Cox in the first BEVERLY HILLS COP.
As someone who grew up watching those movies, I’m having trouble processing that.
I love it when movies do this, killing off the character that looks like will end up being in charge. Like Samuel L. Jackson in DEEP BLUE SEA. It throws things off balance for a bit and that’s exciting!
Denzel should now appear in sequels to all Russell Crowe movies. THE POPE’S EXORCIST? Sure, there are two of them now, and Denzel is the competition. And he rides a Harley.
Every time I say BLACKHAT, COLLATERAL, and MIAMI VICE are my favorite Michael Mann movies, some boring film bro always shows up in my mentions asking me how come HEAT isn’t my number 1? Why can’t people make their own lists? Instead of policing other people’s lists?
What’s with this “A Knives Out Mystery” thing? They never called CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER “A Jack Ryan Thriller” or QUANTUM OF SOLACE “A James Bond Adventure”. It’s weird, and only shows that Netflix sees audiences as complete fucking idiots.
Yesterday's prompt about action movies made me realize that many of my mutuals love RONIN. That made me happy because this movie deserves all the love. It's fucking awesome. I love this 90s stuff.
I want to know why John McTiernan isn’t working anymore. Yeah, I realize he went to prison due to illegal wiretaps and lying to the FBI, but who gives a fuck? David O. Russell, on the other hand, is a piece of shit and he’s still working often.
PREDATOR 2 was the first R-rated movie I saw in theaters when I was 11 (yeah, I snuck in), and I remember how exciting this sequence was to me. Exactly the movie 11-year-old me was hoping for. To this day, it remains my favorite Predator movie.
Thinking about how 30 years ago we used to get different kinds of mid-budget movies in theaters, and that was our normal. I really miss that time, but I’m glad I got to experience those days as a teen.
TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. is one of my favorite movies from the 80s-- you can't imagine how many times I saw this as a kid, but I hadn't seen the trailer in ages. It's so good!
Can we drop the 5-second trailers for the trailer that is about to start? It’s fucking annoying and useless. Like, I’m already here, I already pressed play, leave me the fuck alone and let me watch the fucking trailer, goddamnit.
JOHNNY MNEMONIC IN BLACK AND WHITE is quite a different— better experience. It actually feels different, it doesn’t feel like a mere gimmick as has been the case with other recent movies. This actually alters the overall mood and vibe of the movie. I really like this version!
This is a good time to again say that I really wish Eddie Murphy’s career had veered into action rather than comedy in the 1990s. METRO (which rules, by the way) offers a glimpse of that. A slightly more serious tone for Eddie Murphy, but that’s what makes it so special to me.
One of those great sequels that retroactively makes the original a little better— if that’s possible. In fact, I’ll go as far as saying that I think I enjoy 2049 a bit more than the original. And I love the original.
No, we didn’t. It’s a super fun movie that found its audience on home video. I’d say that’s pretty great! That’s what happened with many great movies in the 90s.
As a 1990s teen, I am deeply offended that THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE isn’t being marketed as a Jerry Bruckheimer movie. If Jerry Bruckheimer is producing your movie, it is first and foremost a Jerry Bruckheimer movie. Those are the rules.
There are people on here who claim that the only good Netflix movies are those that are released on blu-ray by Criterion. First of all, fuck those ignorant fucks. Second, I’ve prepared a list of Netflix movies that I consider to be awesome. In alphabetical order, of course. 🧵
THE LORD OF THE RINGS is already a great trilogy. So here’s a crazy idea, but hear me out: adapt a book that hasn’t been adapted before. I’m sure there must be one or two out there.
Remember when movies used to be just movies? And big hits like THE ROCK, JERRY MAGUIRE, ARMAGEDDON, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, FACE/OFF, CON AIR, AIR FORCE ONE or CLIFFHANGER didn’t start a “cinematic universe”? Maybe a sequel, and that wasn’t always the case. I miss those days.
BAD BOYS: CURSE OF CAPTAIN HOWARD
BAD BOYS: BLOODLINES
BAD BOYS: FIST OF DEATH
BAD BOYS: RITES OF DRACULA
BAD BOYS: THE FINAL DIMENSION
HELLWORLD: BAD BOYS X
I’m pretty sure movies would do way better at the box office if there was like a six-month window between theatrical release and streaming/home video release. But that’s me.
@bigvYNWA
Absolutely not. It says nothing about audiences’ intelligence, and to make such a claim sucks. It does say a lot about what audiences find appealing. Just because audiences weren’t interested in a movie you like, it doesn’t mean they’re dumb.
I miss mid-budget thrillers from the 90s. They weren’t looking to start a franchise or revive a well-known IP or any of that crap. They were just solid standalone movies, and they were awesome! I miss seeing stuff like this in theaters.
I see a lot of people still disappointed that THE FALL GUY had an underwhelming opening and claiming it somehow marks the death of cinema. But can we instead celebrate the fact that THE BEEKEEPER was a hit and it tripled its budget during its theatrical run?
Now that we're talking about Alien, allow me to once more praise ALIEN³ for being the best Alien movie ever made. And also the only Alien movie where they pronounce "lieutenant" correctly.
ALIEN³, you guys. A gothic horror masterclass, a sequel that dares to do unexpected things and explore uncharted territories, it should be a delight to horror fans. Instead, people just whined because it wasn’t another ALIENS. I’ll never understand.
Also, I’m pretty sure there would be fewer bombs if movies didn’t cost $200-$300 million dollars. Like, if your movie needs to make a billion dollars just to break even, that’s not a sustainable model, in my opinion. Also, I’m hungover. What the fuck do I know?
If actors playing characters of a different nationality/ethnicity bother you, wait until you find out about Cliff Curtis, Anthony Quinn, Jordi Mollà, or Javier Bardem. 😬
incredibly funny that they could have so easily just not brought back John Rhys-Davies' character, but they did so now we get to see a Welsh actor playing an Egyptian in 2022
Enough about Toretto, give me a Fast & Furious movie that focuses entirely on the Shaws, and have them fully invested in some plot to destabilize the British monarchy.
Oh, oh! I have a hot take! What better way to start the day with a hot take, right? Well, here it is: I know you lot love THE DARK KNIGHT. But I personally enjoy THE DARK KNIGHT RISES a lot more. There, I said it. I will not be silent anymore.
@TheRealestEazy
Agreed. It’s weird to me that people insist that Hemsworth and Gosling are movie stars. Movie stars are kind of an outdated concept now, and the ones that do exist is because they became movie stars when that meant something.
ALIEN³, you guys. A gothic horror masterclass, a sequel that dares to do unexpected things and explore uncharted territories, it should be a delight to horror fans. Instead, people just whined because it wasn’t another ALIENS. I’ll never understand.
Who the hell organizes their Criterion discs by spine number? That’s just weird and makes no sense. Alphabetical is the way to go. Isn’t it? Or am I the weird one here?
Now that TRUE LIES and THE ABYSS are finally coming out on blu-ray, can we focus our efforts on getting STRANGE DAYS and SOLARIS also on blu-ray? These two movies are easily Lightstorm Entertainment’s most neglected titles, and they deserve better!
I don’t understand the practical application of a release like this. If you’re going to sell me extra discs, give me tons of special features instead, not the same movie three times on different formats.
So if ALIEN ROMULUS takes place between ALIEN and ALIENS, then my guess is that everyone dies, since no one believes Ripley about the existence of the xenomorphs, which means no one present in this incident lived to pass the information on. Just a guess.
Man, Star Wars fans are fucking insufferable. I can’t see myself nitpicking on all the inconsistencies in the Lethal Weapon movies the way these “fans” do with Star Wars. Sometimes it almost sounds like they hate the franchise they claim to love. What a waste of energy.
I got a retail job! The money isn’t great but it’s an income! Which I haven’t had in several months. It’s enough to cover my monthly bills, which takes a huge weight off my shoulders. It’s not ideal, but it’s an improvement.
So 14yo has two boyfriends now. The three of them hang out together all the time. It’s fun, it’s cute. School doesn’t like it— they even made me go there to talk to me about it, but look, if she wants to have those experiences, she should have them! Here’s what I did do, though.
Few opening credits sequences establish the mood of a movie as perfectly and accurately as THE LAST BOY SCOUT. I should really watch this tonight, because I’ve had this song stuck in my mind since I woke up this morning.
The director of the Marvels had only directed one feature before.
It was the failed retelling of Candyman.
They’re letting people with barely any experience direct 250 mil dollar films based on their race and gender.
Be as critical of it as you want. It’s all rigged.
Oh, no. This fucking piece of shit is too much of a coward to @ me. But guess what? Teenagers in the 90s did know and love stuff from previous decades. I love it that lots of people in the replies do not agree with this douche.
And also, fuck you. You fucking coward.
Now that we all agree that MIAMI VICE rules, it’s time for me to express my dissent and say that I much prefer the extended cut. It just sets the tone better, in my opinion, and I find it aesthetically more pleasing, overall.
I'm one of the few people who will go to bat for 6 UNDERGROUND on here, and you know what? I'm fine with that. I don't need others to agree with me. This movie rules, and I'm glad it exists.
I asked 14yo her top 10 movies so I could share it with you guys.
In no particular order:
BASIC INSTINCT
THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS
THE USUAL SUSPECTS
A PERFECT MURDER
POINT BREAK
FEMME FATALE
BREAKDOWN
RED SPARROW
MIDNIGHT EXPRESS
BAD COMPANY (1995)
Yeah, I’ve created a monster.
There are cinephiles who are super knowledgeable and the breadth of their taste in movies is awe-inspiring. Film bros are the opposite. They think they’re knowledgeable, that their takes are interesting, but it only shows their disdain for anything beyond what they already like.
The "pretentious film bro" is largely an archetype people cooked up to compensate for their insecurities about having no standards and little artistic curiosity.
I’ll keep an open mind because I love both Tron movies, but I think it’s a mistake not to bring back Garrett Hedlund, Cillian Murphy, and Bruce Boxleitner.
You guys can’t imagine the effect this film had on 10-year-old me. It made me see movies in a way that I never considered before. Suddenly, they were more than entertainment: they were an art form so massive my 10-year-old brain couldn’t believe mere mortals made these things.
I do believe Comanche should have been the movie’s main language, and then add an English audio track for Americans who cry at the sound of another language, or whine at the sight of subtitles.
Years ago I decided that Anthony Peck is playing the same character in DIE HARD and DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. Ricky. Plus, when Hans Gruber is mentioned, he’s the first to react and remember “that thing in the building in L.A.” This is canon for me, and has been for decades.
