@t0nit0ne
This pissed me off. Watching this as a (now) adult makes me understand how something as small as having discomfort being ignored can create larger issues when you grow older (no sense of boundaries etc.)
@thekonyjen
So having a “ghetto” name is synonymous with being dark skin? Are we also going to dismiss the cultural significance of African names and how there are actual ceremonies behind them? I can’t tell if this is willful ignorance or just blatant stupidity
Pronunciation has no correlation to whether an ingredient is “safe” for your skin. This is fear mongering and pseudoscience. People can’t pronounce dihydrogen monoxide yet drink and rinse their face with it. People can pronounce poison ivy yet it’s bad. Use science, not fear!
This makes me so angry. The misconception that people that get acne are not “clean” and “don’t wash their face” or “take care of themselves” needs to die. There are a multitude of factors that affect acne vulgaris (ex: hormones) There is only so much topical cosmetics can do.
@jackieaina
There was a video I saw about being careful when you take and send pictures with your iPhone bc if you send the original photo people will have your location analytics and to just send a screenshot of the photo instead. It’s so sad we have to take so many preventative measures 😭
What’s causing the tightening effect are polysaccharide polymers and film forming ingredients (such as carrageenan in this formula). Essentially these ingredients will adhere to your skin and form a film which visibly and temporarily improves your skin’s appearance!
Skin care for darker skin tones is not a thing. In fact, I’d go on to say this is harmful rhetoric bc it prevents darker skin using certain ingredients proven to work. You should be treating your skin based on your skin concerns, not necessarily your skin color.
I understand you can be the villain in someone’s story but it will never cease to amaze me how people will flip a narrative and twist things about you to make it seem like you were the problem, without ever holding themselves accountable about what they did to you
@_benjvmins_
It was that other yt woman that told her to “walk away” as if she was the aggressor?????? Both of them needed their asses beat and the VS team too for not protecting her
This is not nice. This perpetuates the stigma of imperfect skin being equated to “ugly”. It adds onto an unrealistic beauty ideal and against what self acceptance is. Be more compassionate
A lot of people in the quotes/replies are saying “who tf uses oil as a sunscreen” and that’s tripping me up bc skin care Twitter has been fighting with “chemical-free” and natural Twitter about this for a long time 😭
People on tiktok (and on here tbh) do not question user223579 on their expertise (if any) on certain topics and continually fall victim to confirmation bias. All I ask for is for science literacy to be taught nationwide bc it’s concerning how fast and easy misinformation spreads.
The main thing that truly goes into your body with 100% bioavailability is IV. Other routes of administration like topical cosmetics (natural too) don’t make it very far in the skin (stay in the epidermis) without some type of aid (occlusion, penetration enhancer).
Idk who needs to hear this, but...ditch the toxic chemicals & go natural. Your skin is your LARGEST ORGAN. EVERYTHING you put ON your body goes IN your body, absorbed thru your skin. Soap, skincare, moisturizers, perfume, hair/beauty products, deodorant, I’ll include toothpaste..
A little trick to find a really good body wash is to look for polyquats! Some ingredients that are used for hair care are also used in body care such as this product to give you a very silky finish in the shower. Look for ingredients like polyquaternium-7 and polyquaternium-10
I promise you if the beauty industry wasn’t regulated, we would all be dead. Y’all wanna know why your products get reformulated: partly due to regulations. Why some products get discontinued? Regulations. Why we can’t use ingredients at any concentration? Regulations.
Not my male co****er saying “if you don’t want to get pregnant, don’t have sex.” Baby we work with chemicals and some of them will burn you. Don’t piss me off
As someone who gets to see the prices of formulas before they go on the market, definitely not true. You’d actually be surprised. The cost to make a formula is relatively cheap, no matter how great the raw materials are. Sometimes, you are paying for packaging and testing 💀
The salicylic acid in aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid not the BHA salicylic acid in topical cosmetics/drugs! Please don’t crush aspirin and put it on your face 😭
Seeing Tik Tokkers cooking an oil medley on a stove and sprinkling zinc oxide and labeling it a sunscreen. That’s not sunscreen baby. That’s a mineral marinade. A balsamic zinogrette if you will 😕
If any of y’all see Retinol or Vitamin C products in a clear bottle, don’t put it in your shopping cart. If you have them currently, trash immediately. These two ingredients are very photosensitive. UV radiation + a clear bottle will mess with the effectiveness
If skin care was accessible for everyone, we would all be seeing estheticians, dermatologists, etc. with ease. Not everyone has money to prioritize skin care. This is why people resort to free advice or even DIY, natural remedies.
I have three degrees and I’m going for a fourth + a certification. I love being a chemist, I love being in the beauty industry and I like sharing with you all what im passionate about. One of my goals is to impact the beauty industry and I know I’m getting there period!
Clear skin is not healthy skin. You can have clear skin and never wear SPF (photo damage). You can have clear skin and smoke pack of cigarettes (premature aging). You can have clear skin and have an impaired skin barrier (stinging). All of these are indicators of unhealthy skin.
Just because ingredients are found in nature/food does not mean that applying it on your skin will give you the same benefits. Foods molecules are typically too large to penetrate the skin. Additionally there are no penetration enhancers to aid delivery of these ingredients
If dermatologists have the BEST advice, why are there so many people running to estheticians’ to fix some dermatologists’ poor judgement on their skin? I’ll wait
For people that want to treat hyperpigmentation, I cannot emphasize this enough: SUNSCREEN. Remember, your skin creates excess pigment as a protective response when you are exposed to UV. If you don’t use sun protection, no matter what else you use to treat it, will be futile
For more context: yes DMDM hydantoin does release very tiny amounts of formaldehyde but the amount released is equivalent to the formaldehyde in the fruits you eat daily. There is no evidence that DMDM causes hair loss. There is a difference in an ingredient alone vs a formula
So I'm late but OGX (Johnson & Johnson) is being sued bc apparently the shampoo caused hair loss in lots of people. They even found traces of formaldehyde.😨
Read this, and read it again and again and again and again. When I said brands can claim anything, this is what I mean. “FDA approved” is just a marketing claim. Nothing more, it means nothing and the FDA is not checking for your cosmetics
@caveofbeauty
Idk where people are reading their formulas are 100% organic. The only thing that was certified organic was the ACV. It’s right there on the label…
If you’re going to start a skin care brand, invest in finding a good chemist/product development team, use preservatives where needed, and follow regulations. If you’re not going to put in the time, money and effort to do these things, don’t start it.
Due to COVID, there was a decline in color cosmetic sales, but guess what increased: skin care! It’s a booming market. People are trying to focus on self care more. Of course celebrities will dip into this market. You’ll be seeing an increase in celeb skin care brands.
1) Drinking water does not equate to clear skin
2) Clear, soft skin does not mean healthy skin
3) Natural ingredients are not better than synthetic
4) Preservatives are not dangerous
5) More expensive skin care does not mean better formulation
Let’s clarify that this issue poses the questions on the validity of SPF ratings on ALL sunscreens, not just Asian sunscreens. Please don’t be racist and xenophobic. And on top of that this just affirms the importance of reapplying sunscreen regardless of the SPF rating
PURITO Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ PA++++ has lower protection than advertised. Multiple in-vivo tests have proven that the sunscreen protection is measured around SPF 19.
It was all lie 😭
Micellar water is not toner. Micellar water is like a non-traditional little to no foam cleanser with mild surfactants to cleanse your skin. Key word: surfactants! The cleansing agents. Think of toners as vehicles that help deliver a certain benefit: brightening, hydration, etc.
Purito provided an update on the sunscreen scandal and they handled this situation very well. Discontinuing their products, ending their relationship with their independent lab AND going to get routine tests with several independent labs for SPF value for future releases.
Makeup does not cause acne. Correlation does not equal causation. If someone isn’t removing their makeup properly, not cleaning their tools and reusing them, that can lead to acne. Some people can experience breakouts if they have an allergy or irritation to ingredients.
@EmaniMone
I am so sorry this happened to you. The perfect giveaway was her customers complaining about mold growing in her products not too long ago and now all of a sudden they come out with properly formulated products and don’t know what they do???
Okay these are my thoughts: For starters, as some have already said reformulations happen ALL the time and for many reasons: regulations, brands don’t buy their formulas and have problems with a manufacturer and move to another, brands scale up, sourcing problems and more.
Sunscreen is a drug that is tested for SPF protection and continually regulated. There is not one oil that has been verified as a drug AND SPF tested for sunscreen use. Oils do not block UV sufficiently. Stop cooking your faces
the ordinary should’ve made an ingredient library to educate their consumers better. the only thing I will give them is that they emphasize patch testing
I see comments that the “skin care industry is brain washing you/ a scam” a lot. Truth is your skin loses some functions as you get older. Skin care is a great way to prevent and manage skin conditions. Whether you want to use it it’s up to you, but it’s not useless. It helps.
Titanium dioxide may cause cancer if it is INHALED. You shouldn’t be inhaling such powders in the first place. To be even more specific it was shown to cause cancer in animals and animal studies cannot fully be extrapolated to humans. Context is really important here.
I saw women buying "organic" cotton tampons thinking it was a better alternative to big brands like Tampax & Always, turns out it's owned by Proctor & Gamble & the tampons contained titanium dioxide which causes cancer. Pay attention to who's selling yall the illusion of choice.
Professionals say to apply products on damp skin because it is most effective (aids in permeability) but chemists test finished formulations mainly on dry skin. It is also effective on dry skin so whether you apply on dry or damp skin, do what works best for you
Kelly I truly looked up to you as a chemist before I got into this field. Whether it was intentional or not you undermined my experience. I may not be a veteran chemist like you but I work hard, am constantly learning, and believe I have made an impact in this industry.
Thank you thank you thank you! Dove beauty bars are NOT soap! They are syndet bars. Syndet stands for synthetic detergent which means surfactants. You can have soap-based ingredients in a syndet bar but that does not make it soap. Syndet bars are so much more gentle for your skin
Chemical sunscreens don’t cause cancer but the sun can cause DNA damage, apoptosis, photoaging and cancer. Your skin doesn’t absorb everything into the bloodstream. It’s a strong barrier. Also, pigs, elephants, and rhinos slather themselves in mud or sand to protect themselves 🤫
One reason of many that formulas change is because of fear mongering. If a brand notices that ingredients have negative public perception, they will change the formula. When we demonize ingredients such as parabens, we resort to less studied ingredients
People are mad because I said you can get skin cancer as if it’s breaking news 😭 anyways let’s shift focus. Here’s a picture of my dog when he was a baby!
Step 1: stop putting food on your face and use properly formulated skin care or get a facial massage tool 🤌🏾
Step 2: get an ice roller or refrigerate a gel mask/moisturizer for reducing inflammation/depuffing
Step 3: cut up the cucumber and make a cucumber salad for brunch 🥗
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to present to almost 100 employees of DECIEM including the Chief Scientific Officer about inclusive beauty and the science of black skin, hair, etc.. THEE DECIEM? DECIEM? Y’all know what they said? They love me and are big fans of me. ME?
Medical grade does not EXIST. There is no such thing as a medical grade sunscreen. It is marketing! Cosmetic grade and “medical grade” have access to the same raw materials, go through the same testing processes, etc.
There are no ingredients in sunscreens that have been proven to cause cancer. Studies that have attempted to show a link between UV filters and cancer used them in extremely high concentrations that we would not use in real life and fed them orally to animals.
@MakeupForWOC
Black girl sunscreen has harmful ingredients that have been known to cause cancer. When I was in school my teachers made it known that you should look for sunscreens that have Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as active ingredients. Anything that starts with an “A” or “O” is a No.
The Beet Shield is officially discontinued. This also raises the nuances of sunscreen development. It’s pretty disappointing that manufacturers, especially reputable ones, would not ensure their sunscreen formulations are compliant with the SPF label.
Hydration —-> Hydra —-> water! Oils do NOT have water in them, hence they cannot hydrate. Oils CAN moisturize your skin. Remember oils are occlusives/sealants and help lock in moisture and limit transepidermal water loss (skin losing water).
The surface area plays a huge role in the toxicology and concentration determination of drugs (ex: tretinoin). Imagine taking a product meant for a small surface area and applying it to a larger surface area. The absorption and risk rate greatly increases. Tik Tok is a plague.
In todays episode of things NOT to do with a tube of tret 🥴🥴🥴
Showed this to a friend who agreed that sometimes an idea should remain just that…
There are so many lotions on the market with retinol or other AHAs to use before becoming a DIY mess 👀
Why is one of the arguments for a product being “bad” is that it has “fillers?” Without “fillers” a lot of the ingredients you want to help your skin, hair etc. would not be delivered and you would be way more susceptible to side effects.. they are functional ingredients 🗣🗣🗣
