100%! It is important to prevent co-infection and reassortment of H5N1 with seasonal flu circulating in humans. So efforts to limit both human H5N1 infections (reduce animal outbreak) AND seasonal flu infections among those most at risk for H5N1 seem (via vaccination) critical.
So the kid in BC with H5N1 was very sick to the point of needing ECMO. While the majority of human cases have not been severe, this virus has the potential to be as bad as other H5N1s. At population scale, even infrequently, this is millions of people.

This trend especially at this point in time is concerning, since more human H5N1 cases as seasonal flu ramps up raises the risk of co-infection, in humans and/or animals. This in turn increases the chances of a new strain capable of more efficient person to person spread… so it’s important to maximize coverage of seasonal flu vaccine among dairy farm workers and others at known risk of H5N1 exposure.
Washington state may have 3 more human #H5N1 #birdflu cases. @WADeptHealth listed 3 "probable" cases today, which I'm guessing tested positive in a state lab but must be confirmed by @CDCgov before they make it to the "confirmed" category.

Rwanda reports no new #Marburg cases today & no additional deaths. Three more people have recovered. @RwandaHealth says 346 doses of the @sabinvaccine's experimental vaccine have been administered. Also says there is no evidence of community transmission. 🤞
