Despite his towering academic reputation, John Rawls’s ideas have had little impact outside the university. That’s a shame: as the failures of neoliberalism have become increasingly stark, Rawls’s egalitarian theory of justice has much to recommend it.

I feel I should say this on World Mental Health Day: I'm a longtime sufferer of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more. It's not great, but it's OK, except when it isn't, but it eventually sort of goes away. I'm lucky enough to have access to decent care. Everyone else should, too.

Also, the overwhelming majority of faculty are liberals, not Marxists. Though admittedly a bunch of insufferably loud radlibs in intellectually feeble disciplines self-describing as critical theorists or Marxists doesn’t help our PR problem—‘our’ as in of both academia & Marxism.
The disconnect between public perception of academia vs. the reality is so immense. Anti-intellectuals on the right and left assume that academia is run by--and full of cushy tenured jobs for--"Marxists." The reality is that universities are run like neoliberal businesses. 1/

“Diversity” often becomes yet another tool of management overreach in universities. Read this short thread, then think again about whether it isn’t worth speaking up and preserving the advancement of knowledge as the core mission of the university after all.
1. At my school, social justice imperatives were built directly into the mission statement of the school. Not as subsidiary goals of our main goals, teaching and research, but as the primary goals. Most, not all, faculty, well intentioned liberals, cheered or said nothing.

When highly educated careerists who advocate for others instead of building power from below took over the putative left they started confusing solidarity with empathy and charity.
I can't figure out when the left adopted "grief" and "mourning" as the modal language of solidarity and politics but I've come to think it was a wrong turn. I used to think it was simply not my style (too Christian, penitent, abnegating) but now I think it was a genuine error.

Quite. I think a big part of the explanation is just that most older people are way more racist and islamophobic than young people, so they can’t figure out why students care about the mass slaughter of brown people, Muslims to boot.
It's puzzling to me that people are puzzled about the students' outrage.
