Despite a 1996 agreement between Ibrahim Rugova and Slobodan Milošević, Albanian children in Kosova were still denied proper access to education in their own language. The “3+3” commission—three Serbs and three Albanians—was meant to enforce the deal but failed to do so. This was part of Serbia’s broader repression of Kosova Albanians, who had their autonomy revoked in 1989 and faced systemic discrimination, police violence, and exclusion from public institutions. The denial of education was just one of many human rights violations that fueled growing unrest, ultimately leading to the Kosovo War (1998–1999). Children of War Museum opening Prishtina, Kosova. ‘Play Interrupted’ exhibition by @YIHRKosovo Heartbreaking and moving experience, reading the untold stories of my compatriots and the exhibits took me on a journey of deep reflection on the reality of war on the ground. Having experienced the pain and torment personally being brought up in a war torn country, not knowing what could happen to me and my family within the next hour. I came to the U.K. as a refugee in 1999 - my childhood years were spent fleeing from my home at the request of Serb forces, being internally displaced, living in a refugee camp for 6 weeks in North Macedonia then moving to the U.K. and trying to navigate my family through a new life. My childhood years in the U.K. were spent translating for my parents and trying to integrate us with the U.K. culture - a country that brought life and hope to my being. Something I will forever be grateful for and will do my best to give back. Thank you YIHR for raising awareness and exherting the utmost passion in all the work that you do to bridge gaps between communities.

My first pit stop on my trip to Kosova had to be Libraria Dukagjini to finally get a copy of @shkelzen_g’s recently published book of the massacres committed in Kosova 1998-1999.
