spent my lunch break today coming up with ways that the Kate Middleton story would turn out if it were being investigated by various fictional detectives
I'm so, so happy to finally officially share this piece of good news: my debut novel, THE STARS UNDYING, is coming out from Orbit Books in the fall of 2022.
If you know me, you know what a high bar I have for people trying to talk about New York, so let me say from the bottom of my heart: congratulations to the world on getting to read one of the best things anyone has ever said about New York
it is impossible for any liberation to take root in the premise that destiny is rightfully determined by birth. by right we are born free. systems of oppression are not a natural outgrowth of our bodies. our bodies are rightfully free too
there is *certainly* no coherent or liberatory feminism that synonymizes womanhood with pregnancy, lol. “So-called inclusive language like ‘Ms.’ threatens spaces reserved for women, who always use Mrs.” you people need to realize that is how you sound right now
I'm excited beyond measure to share the cover for my upcoming space opera debut, THE STARS UNDYING, based on the lives of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar! Pre-order:
I don't like to discuss it, but I have been the victim of a violent attack by a hungry, poor, mentally ill stranger on the street in New York. A lot of people sharing violent fantasies seem to think they can speak on my behalf right now, so I guess I should talk about it.
@boneysoups
when I saw the Roman Empire meme for the first time I was like "of COURSE I think about—" and then realized all the heteros in the comments were like "haha yeah I think about how EFFECTIVE & ADVANCED & CIVILIZED it was" and yk... ig pretzels *is* sort of the same on these topics
That is what living in a city with a police force with a reputation for “toughness” and violence meant to me, a victim of a crime: it meant I could not ask for help, because I was too scared that it would mean becoming an accessory to murder.
People talk about fearing a possible attack. As someone for whom this is not theoretical, here's my feeling: if someone was killing me on the floor of a subway car, I hope New Yorkers would help me.
what I learned from MONKEY MAN (2024) dir. Dev Patel: okay well first of all through the power of donating to trans women's GoFundMes all things are possible, so jot that down
There is a lot of beautiful writing about how this city is hard, it's rough, it's never nice and rarely kind and it keeps on breaking your heart. That's all true. And also the city is beautiful, and it loves you back. This book gets it, and I'm so glad it's out there today.
In fact, whenever I have needed help in New York, strangers have been kind to me. That is why I love this city as much as I do. It isn't any bullshit about Broadway or bodegas. It's because New Yorkers have so often immediately, instinctively helped me.
(My story, I should be clear, is rare. Most victims of violent crime know the person attacking them.) It took me a couple of days to be able to walk around my neighborhood again. It took years before my body stopped tensing up whenever I saw someone carrying a cane or crutch.
the Orbit audio team asked me for a list of voice descriptions for THE STARS UNDYING's characters, and were highly professional about it when I inflicted this dramatis personae on their inboxes; perhaps you will enjoy a sneak preview of Space Rome and Space Egypt's cast and crew
That was the worst part. I have been on crutches in New York, and it was a misery, and the only thing that made it survivable was that a large number of strangers were impulsively kind to me. Feeling that I was repaying that kindness with fear was unbearable.
ask your girlfriend how often she thinks about the Roman Empire. "literally never," she will reply. this is because your girlfriend is Mark Antony and she has been drinking on a beach in Alexandria for the last two years
oh so when Ken spends all his time lying on the beach being a professional boyfriend with great abs and getting bossed around by women, he's a member of an oppressed class, but when I, Mark Antony,
I stood up straight, I stopped crying, I kept walking. The man who'd hit me had vanished around the corner. I stared straight ahead until the cop car was safely past, and then I stumbled home crying, put an ice pack on my face, and called my mom.
always a disappointment to see the immense beauty and entertainment value of the language in the Locked Tomb series (some of the best SFF prose this century!) attributed solely to its use of slang and 21st century references
I thought—and this was the first clear thought I'd had since the cane hit me—oh my God, if they see that he's attacked me, they might shoot him in broad daylight.
hoping to give you news quite soon ("soon" indicates, as these things usually do, that I don't have a date, which unfortunately means weeks/months rather than days—but soon!) but as you've all been brave, and it is stabbing season, the smallest teaser:
CAESAR, WALKING OUT OF THE MOVIE THEATER: omg it's brutus. hi brutus!!! may thy knife chip and shatter lmao am i right
BRUTUS, HERE TO SEE KUNG FU PANDA 4: my what
HAPPY WE SHOULD ALL JUST TOTALLY STAB CAESAR DAY!!!!!!!! a thread of The Fall Of The Roman Republic As Other Quotes From Mean Girls (stick around for an exciting treat at the end!)
"why did that man on tiktok build an eel pit" you may as well ask why build a poisonous snake pit? why build an acid-filled oubliette? why build a tower with increasingly hungry wolves on each floor? why build a zero-g prison on the moon? cancel culture is out of control
as a child, did you like: Horrible Histories Books? as an adult, do you like: Jupiter Ascending (2015)? have you ever asked yourself: What If Space Italians Were Having A Bad Time? then head to Goodreads to win a FREE copy of my book THE STARS UNDYING
It's a space opera based on the life of Cleopatra, her love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, and her struggle to reclaim and secure her throne. It's epic, it's romantic, and it has true love and high adventure and a robot who blew up the moon.
absolutely effing thrilled to invite you to my launch event for THE STARS UNDYING at
@bookclubbar
on 11/8 at 8pm EST, where I'll be talking Queer Cleopatra In Space! with one of the all-time craft geniuses,
@casey_mcquiston
For a second I lost my vision. For another second I thought I had lost a tooth. My head was ringing. When my sight cleared, he was bolting toward the end of the block. Then the shock passed, then the pain hit, then the tears came, and then I saw a cop car pull around the corner.
It was July 2020. I was going on a morning walk before I came back to work-from-home. Near my house, a man with a cane approached me and asked for money. This happens a lot in my neighborhood, more often since the start of the pandemic and the jump in poverty.
I am so grateful to
@isabeljka
, the world's best agent, and to my friends and family, and also Plutarch and William Shakespeare I guess? I'm overwhelmed. I am very proud of this book and I'm very, very excited for you all to read it.
People treat Agatha Christie like a logic puzzle and Jane Austen like a Romancelandist but people should treat them both in the spirit they were intended: the single, perfect instant of anticipation after “Okay, can I be petty for a second—“
He was visibly hungry, very skinny, and his clothes were worn. I didn't have any cash on me, so I told him no. He asked me if I could buy him breakfast, then. I said I was sorry, but I was late for work, and tried to walk past him. He whacked me across the face with his cane.
It’s time for an EARLY PEEK at The Stars Undying—if you’re ready to follow a refugee prophet and an almost-victorious conqueror on a chase through the galaxy, click here
transcending over this writeup—constantly taking a moment to admire this cover art—can confirm that genderswapping in The Stars Undying DOES indicate queer romance (romances!) plus nods to attestations of queer affairs for the real historical figures
always been obsessed w ghosts because I think there's such a paradox to them. the presence of an absence. being haunted is when something won't leave you alone specifically because it already has left you alone
sci fi and horror explorations of grief are everything to me... love it when monsters and ghosts and aliens and fantasy universes are all manifestations of loss
in preparation for THE STARS UNDYING being out in the world in 15 days (!!!) and for your entertainment, some history blogging. today: King Ptolemy and his Heist of the Corpse of God
@memilies
am sure you're overwhelmed at this point/this is a classic so you may have already read, but I recently went bonkers in Yonkers about The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany, fully a "oh right that's why I love fantasy" book
@orbitbooks
I've written an essay for
@scalzi
's The Big Idea series, which breaks down immortality, inheritance, and grief in THE STARS UNDYING, and how Alexander the Great became a robot:
ANNOUNCING - NEW VOICES 2022! 🎉
From mythic retellings and gothic fantasy to far-future space opera and more, these books are a perfect introduction to the authors you’ll be reading for years to come.

as a known genius and Thing Investigator, Harriet was skeptical of The Stars Undying for a bit, but has recently decided it’s her beautiful infant daughter or possibly a teddy bear. all you can ask for
my dear friend surprised me with this beautiful commission of Gracia fleeing her home planet beneath the watchful eye of her twin as a Hanukkah gift! Arcelia's smudged lipstick! the vengeful fury in her eyes! (or heartbreak...?) the Burning-Of-Troy lighting of the whole picture!
abandon any framing of white christendom's assertion of absolute control over the human body and mind, enforced through violence against our most vulnerable, as an "other" to you; declare solidarity immediately, solidarity forever, total gender liberation now
i mean my god, if it isn't 'enough' for you that trans kids will suffer, you must know they won't be the only victims of a policy like this. people will report gentle boys and tough girls and gay kids and girls with short hair and boys who like art. gender can be a prison.
folks when I tell you my friends and I for a week have been in a cycle of "you don't think about the Roman Empire?? how??? I think about the Roman Empire all the time????" "Emery... we know that." repeating approx. every 15 minutes
How often do you think about the Roman Empire?

before you, ahem, shuffle off, a thread of quotes from JULIUS CAESAR as iconic Rihanna looks:
To be blunt, I don't really know that American writers need to turn to fiction for the fantasy of "what if there were war criminals, but I was not their enemy, and I was a little bit complicit with the evil." The fantasy is kind of more "and what if that was fine, actually."
if I had a nickel for every time this happened to Mark Antony, I'd have two nickels, which is not a lot, but it's weird that he put both of the women's faces on state currency
all sex on a ship is sex with a sailor's mistress, the sea (Woods and Yarwood, 1984) and therefore a threeway, in which it is not gay (Samberg, Timberlake, and Germanotta, 2011). check and mate
you can convince me that a character who has been in some kind of navy is heterosexual but you cannot convince me has never known the touch of other men. whether he’s straight on shore or not is an unrelated matter to what happens at sea
have known that THE STARS UNDYING 2 (Several More Stars, Significantly More Dying) was going to have to be just the parts of TSU that were Weird, but I may have to face up to it also being just the parts of TSU that were kinky
Louis… Louis, observe this bowl. a plain dish. fit for a peasant. simplement, the rice… little would one guess, Louis, that it had been fried by the unlikeliest créature… le humble shrimp

at 7pm EST, talking building new houses out of old bricks (metaphorically) and SFF novels (literally, these are literal novels, do order them). bring your questions, and register here:
something I believe deeply is that genuinely funny humor (not just a reference but a *joke*) can only be written by someone who loves, thinks about, & understands language. this is what makes Patricia Lockwood another of the great prose writers of our time for example. also dril
what I love about tragedies is they're like broken records—you turn them round and round, looking for the site of the scratch, the place where it can be fixed—and in Julius Caesar there isn't one. the Republic always falls. kingship always wins. it always ends this way.
I've been kvelling over this since base sketches—this beautiful cityscape from
@kemar74
and
@Planetpinto
is everything I could have hoped for since I first dreamed my princess looking over her Alexandria, the Pearl of the Mediterranean, here as the starry City of Endless Pearl.
you watch Brutus build a speech out of bricks, and you watch Antony build one out of spiderweb. you watch truth go up against beauty and you watch truth lose. you watch Brutus' honor go up against Antony's love and you watch love conquer all.
I love it to death. breaks my heart.
absolutely blown away by this thoughtful and beautiful STARS UNDYING review, which cuts right to the heart of the project of the novel—immortality, narrative, how they shape power, and how blurred they are with the thing we call love—and has some remarkable commentary on it
great news: I’m live with the sensational

COMING TO NETFLIX IN 2021: We brought these twenty men to a beautiful island for what they thought was a tropical vacation. But little did they know - we would transform all of them into pigs
this speech is very nearly my favorite moment in Julius Caesar—I transcribed it word for word into my diary with a leaky pen when I was 13—it's one of the most sincere and the most cynical moments in Shakespeare
If you think I have good taste, I have a short horror story about Oakland, smoke zombies, and the end of the world out now in
@ReckoningMag
! You can buy the ebook now or read it online for free on April 15. Stay safe, stay indoors, good luck ❤️
But when the reader's representative encounters evil but is not herself in danger - when it's clear from the narrative that "war crimes" add an atmosphere of violence but in-text can only kill the families of *other people* - then that's kind of a different fantasy, isn't it?
to develop character, I often ask "what story does this person think they're the hero of?" Gracia sometimes thinks she's in a fairy tale where the monarch disguises themself as a peasant and goes among the people. Anita thinks she's in an absolutely killer MTV spot airing in 1998
!!!!: "Realism is not simply a question of plausibility; it is a question of legibility through the consensus of a dominant class which chose to see the world in a very specific and convenient way... freedom is the least realistic thing in the world."
Thanks to Fantasy Cafe for the guest post! I argue that the fantasy genre derives its power by rejecting literary realism. As a literal shapeshifter, my life is not "realistic" & neither is my literature.
