Judge Mark McCannon took DA Pamela Price to task this week for making misstatements in the media, saying, “I don’t see how you can fix your mouth to say that.” Now she wants him off all her criminal cases. We broke down all the background for you.
Alameda County DA Pamela Price has announced that she will seek to disqualify a judge who recently ruled against her "from hearing any criminal cases being prosecuted by our office." The judge had called her approach to a controversial case "incoherent."

The longer I do this job, when I cover a court hearing, court staff is increasingly surprised to have a reporter in the courtroom. It makes me sad for our industry and our nation.
Instead of signing off (after an 11-hour day), we're catching up on the governor's noon briefing. Generally we tweet these live but we were monitoring a city budget meeting when this went down.

Berkeley police and firefighters have responded to Overlook Road in the Berkeley Hills after a woman was stabbed and others reportedly hurt, according to preliminary reports. "Ma'am, can you hear me?" a police officer could be heard asking over the radio.
Mila Mangold has lived through two pandemics. On her half-birthday, Berkeley residents talked with me about what the 112-year-old has meant to her neighborhood.
Berkeleyside has just learned that the woman who was run down and killed on a sidewalk earlier this month was named Bernadette Youngbear. Authorities say they hope the publication of her name will help them find her family.

DA PAMELA PRICE TOWN HALL: Some came to question her. Others came to defend her. In the end, many were left with frustration about rising crime in Oakland and what, if anything, can be done about it.
Hundreds of people turned out Thursday for an Oakland town hall focused on public safety and Alameda County DA Pamela Price. Some asked for stricter consequences, including for youth crime. Price supporters said there's only so much she can do.
You can see the 3D scanner (in the distance) along with the white van involved in the collision. BPD said the woman was walking in the southern crosswalk on Telegraph (at Derby) when the driver hit her. Items from the crash are still in the street. BKGD:

Tonight’s most memorable

moment came when a public commenter thought her mic was off. The mayor called the next speaker and the prior one goes, “I get emotional bc I want to say: You fucking bitches.” Then the woman whose turn it actually was chimed in: “That wasn’t me.”
I’m watching fewer council meetings now that

Council just voted on how to spend about $5M in excess equity from the General Fund. Citing an uptick in gunfire, the largest single project on the lengthy priority list is $1.3M for new security cameras in several Berkeley neighborhoods. Thread.

Did not know I’d be learning at the Mormon temple tour about the important role of Freedman’s Savings Bank records in helping African Americans learn about their history. The church did a huge project to make those records accessible. (Paul Cobb of the Oakland Post speaks here.)
