“There’s something really remarkable that I have noticed about most of these Chinese people. Even older people, people in their 40s, 50s, 60s. They look so much less traumatized than most Americans”. Girl, I am BEGGING you to google the Cultural Revolution for the love of GOD.
🇺🇸🇨🇳 Americans are quickly realizing that the US is not a first world country after spending just a little time watching the lifestyles of the Chinese on RedNote

Capitalism is so cruel and punishing that thousands of middle-class families can easily afford to go on vacations so sumptuous they would make Marie Antoinette jealous.
Late stage capitalism is so absurdly comical at times. This new cruise ship has: . - 23 restaurants .- 22 bars / clubs .- 7 full sized pools + 9 hot tubs.- Full waterpark .- Rock climbing wall .- Ice skating rink .- Surf simulator .- Golf course .- Basketball court.- Rooms for

9 states and DC place no gestational limit on abortion. A quick Google search turns up clinics here in DC that provide abortions up to 36 and 32 weeks. @TheAtlantic interviewed a doctor who performs 32+ week abortions, and about half his patients have healthy babies.
For the record: You cannot have an abortion in the 9th month. You cannot have an abortion after birth. If we didn’t keep banning books, maybe we wouldn’t have to clear that up. #Debate2024.

Yeah, the global poor are so exploited that they’ve gone from 94 percent of the population to 9.6 percent since capitalism burst on the scene.
Capitalism is so cruel and punishing that now thousands of middle class families can benefit from the exploitation of thousands upon thousands of laborers while simultaneously doing immense damage to the climate.

There’s a segment of the left that’s just become so deeply anti-intellectual and so utterly devoid of curiosity. If reporters can’t ask subjects tough questions, what are they even doing?.
CBS journalist @TonyDokoupil asked Ta-Nehisi Coates tough questions. Then the backlash began. Listen to the audio obtained by The FP of the contentious editorial meeting that followed.

Half of student loan borrowers owe less than $20K. If you have $20K in student loans, your monthly payment will likely be <$250. Activists with <7th percentile loan balances have skewed the debate & made it seem like the average borrower is drowning when they're just not.
There are 44 million of us. I'm among the lucky minority who can afford to pay. What's everyone else going to do?

It’s becoming increasingly clear to me that combining Aspergers and autism was a huge mistake. The autism spectrum is just too big. There aren’t meaningfully shared interests between the highest and lowest functioning ends. From @JillEscher:

People called me nuts for sitting my husband down after a year of dating and basically telling him that we were either getting soft-engaged (i.e. would get engaged after we graduated college) or breaking up. And yet!.
If you don’t have a ring on your finger within a maximum of two years, you’re ngmi. It’s time to move on sis, to bigger and better things.

*sigh*. Only 20% of Americans even have student loan debt. And more than half them owe less than 20K. The idea that the average American household has almost 60k in student loan debt is almost certainly BS.
The average American household owes $10,000 in credit card debt, $58,957 in student loan debt, $241,840 in mortgage debt, and $22,612 in auto loans, per YahooFinance.

What is this if not literal thoughtcrime?. The fact that you can be prosecuted for having the wrong *thoughts in your head* in England will never stop being absurd. This is what happens without ironclad free speech protections.
Today, a man was criminally convicted for standing still, silently praying, in England. I've now had chance to read the decision in full. A short thread below. And before you get to the end, you can support Adam here:

We’ve set up so many girls for unnecessary mental suffering—as @glukianoff calls, it we've been encouraging them to do “reverse CBT” on themselves for years. If you are undone by mild setbacks, how can you even begin to cope if something actually terrible happens to you?

I've actually had lab-grown meat before, and it's pretty good! . Politicians like Fetterman and DeSantis are worried about competition for meat industry giants, not protecting Americans.
Pains me deeply to agree with Crash-and-Burn Ron, but I co-sign this. As a member of @SenateAgDems and as some dude who would never serve that slop to my kids, I stand with our American ranchers and farmers. 🇺🇸

The Biden Administration released new #TitleIX rules today, and they’re BAD. The new regs will allow students to be found guilty of assaulting a classmate by just 51 percent of the evidence, with a single administrator acting as judge, jury, and executioner. a short 🧵 .

Now is literally the best time to be alive in all of human history. I am constantly in awe of my sheer dumb luck to have been born an American in 1999. Grocery stores! Vaccines! Civil liberties! . Ours is a time of incredible abundance.
For virtually all of human history, almost everyone alive (95%+) was subsistence farmer-level poor. When I was born, that had fallen to about half the world’s population. Today, we’re down to ~10%. This “everything sucks now” worldview comes from a place of incredible privilege.

What an utterly baseless smear. @TheFIREorg has worked to stop drag bans and anti-CRT laws. They’ve defended people like Nikole Hannah-Jones and run afoul of Chris Rufo. They also defend right-wing speech. It’s almost like they’re a free-speech organization that means it!

Dude I voted for Biden.
@LPNH @reason @RollingStone Trump broke @reason. Badly. So much that some of the editors admitted they voted for Biden. However, @emmma_camp_ is a solid writer for them.

I think a lot of people are discounting the very high possibility that this is simply a crazy person without a coherent political identity. Remember how the guy who tried to assassinate Regan did it because he thought Jodie Foster was hot?.
@emmma_camp_ I have to suspect that endlessly drumming him as a existential threat would push someone to do this.

I’m sorry but this is awesome. It’s hard to describe just how stupid rich normal Americans are. This is a nice vacation for a middle-class American family, and it would make Mansa Musa feel poor.
The "Icon Of The Seas" sets sail in January 2024. 5610 passengers, 2350 crew members, 5 times larger and heavier than the Titanic, 19 floors with more than 40 bars, restaurants and bowling alleys. What a monstrosity!

Love this @nytimes article. Poor students are better off when elite unis require the SAT because (unlike grades and essays), it closely predicts student achievement. It’s mediocre rich kids, not smart disadvantaged ones who stand to gain from the recent anti-SAT trend.

I seriously want to know what people who would give the government authority to ruthlessly suppress speech think would happen if someone they don't like gets elected. Idk man if Trump is an immediate threat to democracy, that seems like a good reason to not erode free speech??.
Always been a bad sign when dudes like this put "free speech" in air quotes so credit I guess for saying the quiet part out loud.

I can’t think of a protest less effective at persuading people. Why has this become such a pervasive trend in activism? Surely organizers realise that all this does is negatively polarize people against their cause.
Both directions of the Golden Gate Bridge have been shut down due to a Pro-Palestinian protest. Demonstrators have blocked the southbound direction of Highway 101. This is the second protest causing major back-ups on Bay Area roadways, the demonstration has blocked northbound

If you thought my piece didn’t make it clear that the procedures I’m talking about (third-trimester specifically) are incredibly rare, I don’t know what to tell you. My whole point is that the rarity of a thing does not mean it's not worth our moral concern.
the CDC reports less than 1 percent of abortions occur after 21 weeks but @emmma_camp_ for some reason felt that easily identifiable statistic was not worth including in this disappointingly misleading piece .

@katrosenfield @BovyMaltz Ditto to the honorific "Mrs!" I am an energetic 24-year-old with most of my eggs, plausible deniability when it comes to purity, a flush ponytail, a pep in my step that had yet to run out! Being called Mrs anything is viscerally horrifying.

The ability to extend one’s adolescence as long as possible is a powerful status symbol. Harvard students get to skip class to wallow in their big feelings while a 22-year-old not in college still has to show up to work on time.
What are we doing here, guys? .College is supposed to get students ready for the real world. Model how we get back to work.

The community element of religion cannot be underestimated. One of the best decisions I ever made when I moved to DC was to start going to church. And I maybe 30% believe in God on a good day!.
In the last 25 years:. 1. The U.S. had the fastest decline in church attendance in history. 2. Socializing time fell for all groups—but declined the most for those whose religiosity fell the most. I wrote about what America loses when it loses religion.

The complete lack of message discipline from pro-Palestine activists is absolutely absurd. There is literally nothing to be gained from calling for *10,000* October 7ths. All it does is make you look like a barbarian and distract from your legitimate grievances!.
Heard outside Columbia University last night: "Never forget the 7th of October. That will happen not 1 more time, not 5 more times, not 10, not 100, not 1,000, but 10,000 times! The 7th of October is going to be every day for you"

Is this really a right-wing take? I think most people would say that you shouldn’t marry someone if you want incompatible things out of life.
One of the interesting things about the RW discourse on relationships is the essential indifference to the idea of love. So if Bethany's son is in love with a woman who doesn't want the same number of kids as he does, he should dump her. Someone else will come along.

I keep seeing a lot of people adopt this attitude that (1) if anyone disagrees with you, it’s because they’re a bad person and (2) you’re under no obligation to be polite to “bad people,” in fact, you should be as nasty as possible. (1/4).
I read something recently about how there’s a strain of discussion norms emerging on the left that can only be described as imitating the school bully from an 80s movie. Basically they talk like Biff Tanner from Back To The Future.
