Britain’s rivers are in a terrible state and getting worse

@theipaper
and
@newscientist
magazine are launching a UK-wide campaign to rescue the country’s polluted waterways
This is a brilliant next step in New Scientist’s 65-year-long journey towards global (science-related) domination. We are really excited about the new opportunities this move will offer us and we do of course remain 100% editorially independent.
Delighted to announce
@adamvaughan_uk
is joining
@newscientist
as chief reporter. Adam is a great reporter and also a great digital-first journalist. Welcome Adam!!
As some of you know I have quit New Scientist to become a full time writer. I am leaving NS in the safe hands of the brilliant
@catdl

@newscientist
@ninatweets

New Scientist has asked its UK staff to work from home from now on, except in a few very exceptional circumstances. An odd feeling going home tonight not knowing for how long.

By recording every defender’s death, the Guardian, in close collaboration with Global Witness, hopes to raise awareness of the deadly struggle on the global environmental front line ...

Actually hand washing with soap very much *best* way of cleaning hands. Sanitisers should only be used as a poor second if no access to soap and water. Soap deactivates this virus most effectively.
I'm delighted to announce that
@Coneee
(Conrad Quilty-Harper), formerly digital editor at UK GQ magazine, is joining us here
@newscientist
as digital editor. Welcome Conrad!
Didier Queloz, who has just won a Nobel prize for spotting the first exoplanet (with Michel Mayor), was a wonderful speaker at the New Scientist Live show last year. His talk filmed here (you need to subscribe), so marvellous:
The arc (advance reader copy) of my novel Inanna, book one of the Sumerians Trilogy.

The ARCs of

's INANNA are in, and look *stunning*. The Epic of Gilgamesh as you've never read it before.
Cannot describe just how joyous it was to work on this book.
On the day of a depressing story about a man putting down his female colleagues in physics, a further reminder of why this is real news not a sideshow ... this is the science nobel count as of last year
My essay for Prospect magazine (you can read for free if you register) on why the study of Ancient Sumer and other early civilisations of the Mesopotamian region is the most exciting and fast-moving field in the humanities right now
Absolutely fantastic read on the world's first (known) writing (and civilisations) by my colleague
@alisonge
including wonderful behind the scenes glimpses of
@britishmuseum
's cuneiform collection.
@newscientist
How much would a glass of beer have cost you in Ancient Mesopotamia? AI is helping to answer these important questions and more by decoding the world’s oldest writing

The Coronavirus live blogs from the Guardian have been so excellent and such a lifeline - thanks to all keeping them going
@phipps_claire
@bonniemalkin
We'll also be asking our readers for their own stories of their locals streams and rivers, and celebrating the majesty of our glorious waterways and all that they offer all of us
And together with the i newspaper, and many of the scientists and activists already so deeply engaged with the problem, we'll be working out a pragmatic, apolitical manifesto for looking after our rivers properly
Amazing!!! Well done to our brilliant pod team
@rowhoop
@OllieGuillou
and everyone at New Scientist - all of whom have so enthusiastically supported the show - and a big thanks too to the judges 🎉
Finally, from 200+ entries, 114 shortlisted podcasts and 18 category winners, the
@mediavoicespod
team chose one podcast to rule them all. We had an amazing selection to choose from, but
@NewScientist
Weekly stood out for all three of us as an exceptional podcast

I am a dweeby fan girl for this culture / literary / friendship / feminism podcast - I even listen to the ones where other fans send in questions or they do spin-off author interviews. So *imagine* how happy I am to have my novel featured!!!!
One of my favourite episodes of Cool Story yet - we talk historical fiction (it’s good????), Britney Spears’ memoir and an attempted takedown of David Sedaris
