As part of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organisation's ongoing initiative to promote air quality and health, a series of meetings were held during December 2024, bringing together key stakeholders from various sectors. Organised by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), Ministry of Health, and the PAHO/WHO, these meetings addressed the environmental determinants of health, with a focus on air quality and the impacts of climate change. On December 2, 2024, Mr. Hayden Romano, Managing Director - EMA delivered remarks at the meeting on "Health Promotion in Trinidad and Tobago using a Healthy Cities, Municipalities and Communities Approach." Along with addressing environmental determinants, this meeting discussed municipal strategies for mitigation and adaptation. On December 3rd, a capacity-building workshop was held for technical staff to strengthen the awareness of air pollution health risks in Trinidad and Tobago, attended by representatives from line ministries, local government authorities, civil society organizations and higher education institutions. These gatherings were a pivotal step towards improving air quality and public health in Trinidad and Tobago. #trinidadandtobago #AirQuality #PublicHealth #ClimateAction #HealthyCities

Students from St. Augustine Girls' High School's Lower Six Environmental Class were engaged in a lecture on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). The session covered key topics such as the role of the EMA, its subsidiary legislation, and the regulations surrounding the Certificate of Environmental Clearance. The class explored the benefits of EIAs, and students were encouraged to identify effective mitigation strategies for common environmental impacts. #education #Students #environment #TrinidadandTobago

Our very own Marcia Tinto, Senior Environmental Education Officer presented on Climate Change Threats to Sustainability in Key Sectors! The NYSESG Pilot Project has been extremely fortunate to have the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) as an in-kind sponsor. Not only has the EMA gone above and beyond in the provision of facilities and support resources for the delivery of the training sessions but have made available key institutional knowledge resources. One such resource is Marcia Tinto, Senior Environmental Education Officer at the EMA, a repository of extensive knowledge in environmental and climate change matters. The NYSESG was afforded the benefit of her experience and knowledge in facilitating a session on Climate Change Threats to Sustainability in Key Sectors which was well received by the participants. Thank you Marcia for your impactful and enriching presentation. No doubt, what you have shared will support significant knowledge inputs to the design of the school’s sustainability projects as we transition into Phase two of the project. It's World Wetlands Day! In line with this year's theme for World Wetlands Day 2025, Protecting wetlands for our common future, we hope to share a bit of knowledge on wetlands in Trinidad and Tobago. These areas are some of the most biodiverse environments in the world and it is essential that we protect them for ourselves and the wildlife that depends on them.
