I think a lot of language prescriptivists just like noticing details and patterns in language. Part of becoming a linguist (if you do it right) is realizing that you can still notice those things but think they’re cool instead of annoying or deficient🥲

1. There is no such thing as a lazy accent or lazy speech. It takes the same amount of articulatory effort! 2. You do not need to build muscles in your mouth in an anatomical sense. As a metaphor, sure. As physiology? No. (2/10)

3. The bit about space between your hard & soft palate makes no sense. It's mouth phrenology. 3a. Individual vocal tract anatomy does vary, and correlates of that variation does show up elsewhere. It’s cool as shit! But this isn’t how anatomy varies, or how its effects show up.

@BakstSarah recommends Johnson, Ladefoged, & Lindau 1993: Articulatory variation in AmEng is individual, not population level. Some people move jaws more, some people move tongues, none of it is consistent with minimizing effort or laziness

Probably the thing that surprises non-ling/lang people most is when I tell them I don't believe in adjectives. In my professional opinion, they are all essentially verbs or essentially nouns/nominalizations. (I shan't be taking feedback on this stance at this time.)
