everybody talks about how easy it is to learn romance languages one after the other but noooobody talks about how knowing multiple romance languages can kill your confidence because you're constantly scared that you're using false cognates 😮💨
english tip!! 🇺🇸
“could you repeat that?” is a mouthful and sounds kinda robotic, so here are some more natural ways to say that:
- what was that?
- say again?
- sorry?
- i didn’t catch that.
baddabing baddaboom more native
me in 2015 deciding to learn “a little” German “for fun” not realizing that the thrill of the challenge would turn into a compulsive need to master it to C-level fluency or else i am nothing
Duolingo should have an "I'm going on holiday to this country very soon" setting so it teaches you "can I have the bill" instead of "the cow boils an egg"
some quick little snapshots i took of meself earlier before my hearing for my name change (it had to be virtual lol). my name is officially Elysse DaVega!
my first Polyglot Conference has been great, except for one thing 🫠 this guy i met yesterday wouldn’t stop complimenting me (my eyes, my hair, my voice) and it was so uncomfortable. why can’t people be more professional?
my favorite matriarch and the dopest DaVega— my sweet grandma passed this weekend, she lived a long and interesting life. 94 years on this spinning rock 🌎 i won’t be sad cause i know she’s taken care of now ☁️
it is so unsettling to be a woman in this community sometimes. men don’t take me seriously and it’s exhausting making deleting 50,000 comments like “big boobs” “sexy girl” on my YT videos a part of my to-do list. it’s embarrassing.
just found out my sweet mama has COVID, if you could keep her in y’all’s prayers and thoughts i would be eternally grateful. she’s a housekeeper and works 40 hours a week so i was scared this would happen..
i’m really disappointed by how short people’s attention spans are getting for videos.. i’ll post 12 or 13-minute videos on YouTube and people still comment that it’s “too long” or that i need to “get to the point”.
i forgot that

can be a weird place sometimes. what possesses a person to come on here & complain about not getting recognition for studying 100+ languages? is that what people learn languages for nowadays?
[THREAD] 🧵 As we’re approaching the new year and planning our studies accordingly, I thought I’d share my goal-setting process in case anyone needs ideas 👀
cw // weight
happy with the healthy 15~ pounds i’ve gained over the past couple years. first picture is from 2018, second & third are recent. here’s to fuller cheeks with good color!
immersion is a miracle for learning German word order. the fact that "today will i you a letter write" (heute werde ich dir einen Brief schreiben) is a normal sentence in my brain amazes me 💀

if you’re learning a new language, there’s never going to be an “a-ha” moment where you suddenly feel confident enough to speak to natives.
speaking confidence is something you have to build up gradually, and you CAN start from day one. learn to say hello! thank you! goodbye!
to Korean-speaking friends: is it possible to learn Korean without liking kpop? I have literally never met a Korean learner that wasn't at least a casual listener lol
personally i’m so tired of online language coaches posting general statements about how to learn a language as some ultimate truth when it literally cannot be applied to all people
i hate seeing “all-natural ingredients” on food packaging at the store. you know what is also naturally occurring? lead. arsenic. carbon monoxide. natural means nothing
AHHHH I REACHED 60K and DIDNT EVEN REALIZE
thanks to all y’all who watch my videos 🥲💕 this used to be just a dumb high school hobby but it’s now played such a cool role in my developing adult life!!
White academics in Mexico occupying spaces that don’t belong to them, giving workshops on slavery & its history, ignoring what actual Black Mexicans have to say about it, lol not surprised
¿Quién mejor que una racista para hablarnos sobre esclavitud? Kemozion, ya quiero saber qué va a decir una persona que equiparó seres humanos a muebles en una dinámica de redes sociales 🙃🙃🙃
people have this weird Stockholm-syndrome relationship with Duolingo where they think it’s the only way to learn a language while sitting on your ass.
like, “it’s either textbook/classroom situation (time-intensive) or Duolingo (easy)”
i use so many languages in my everyday life that my brain now just remembers the information and detaches it from the language completely.
i have a close friend that i constantly switch between Portuguese & English with & i just remember /what/ we talk about. not the language
tomorrow i have my first spanish lesson ever on italki— not as a student, but as a teacher! (i’m also a professional teacher for spanish, not just english). this should be exciting! 🇲🇽
let me tell u, with German, when u don’t speak it for months, the FIRST thing to go is declensions. i’m out here using the wrong endings left and right in my lessons ☹️ DONT STOP SPEAKING
i forgot how much i love working with kids. i had a 16 year-old student today and when i asked her if she had any talents, she said “destroying everything i touch” 😹
hi friends 🐰 Since I get asked often about the resources I use (and for which languages) I put them all into a Notion template for you! (There's literally almost 300)

after every video i get a comment of someone telling me i look like someone else, and this time is was Aerith from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. it looks like i was cosplaying 😭
one of my students today forgot the word for bubbles and instead called them “water balls” so i regret to inform everyone that this is the new official name.

be sensitive to the reasons WHY ppl don’t pass down languages when they move to the united states. be sensitive to why migrant kids are hesitant to speak those languages. they definitely already have family criticizing them for it so the last thing they need is ur ass doing it 2
man one of the most annoying things about learning languages is having to learn new punctuation conventions. i probably look rabid abusing the em dash left and right in all my languages
i want to start a thread of mistakes that i see non-natives make in english— not basic ones, because c’mon you’ll get those corrections eventually, but the more specific/advanced ones.
the Baader-Meinhof effect: once you learn about a new thing, whether it be a word, a dog breed, a trend, anything, you start noticing it everywhere.
do you guys feel like this applies to your languages? i feel like i start to see a word everywhere once i learn it.
language learning is like a card game... people can explain you the rules extensively but you never get the hang of it until you play a couple of rounds 💭
Last week
@hartsandhelbig
was kind enough to let me chat with them about growing up Deaf, the intersection of that identity with their art, and going viral on TikTok for just that. Link is in my bio!
nothing will top the moment in 2020 when
@damondominique
subbed to my channel and left me comments on my 🇩🇪 videos 😭 bae i’ll be 21 in 4 months pls invite me to a red wine talk
fun fact: i actually got accepted to give a talk at this year's Polyglot Conference, but i opted out. i really want my first time to be in person! i can't wait for PC 2021 🥺 who's thinking about going?
Lol i’ve lost nearly 100 subscribers after posting another video about my journey as a Jewish B’nei Anusim, sometimes i forget that ppl really just don’t like jews huh
