There’s a fundamental set of movements demonstrated in all good golf swings. The exactness of these fundamentals can vary within functional margins but the alignments, sequence and timing of the basic pattern are overwhelmingly similar.
#golf
It sounds blindingly obvious but don’t lose sight of this simple fact: When making a golf swing, there are two objectives 1. Make (good) contact with the ball 2. Send the ball to the target (consistently). It’s easy to get lost when searching for improvement.
#golf
In and up, down and out, in and up… If the “baseline of the plane” is aimed at the target (think Ben Hogan’s pane of glass…), a ball struck with a descending blow will also be struck with an “in to out” path.
#golf
To develop the skill of club face control, begin by reducing the length & speed of the stroke. Take the necessary time to educate the hands, be prepared to hit repeat many times over. Place emphasis on correct address alignments, contact and directional control.
#golf
The hands hold the golf club. The arms transport the hands. The body accommodates the arm swing. The arm swing and body motion will organise in response to the intended ball flight. Begin by identifying what ball flight you would like to see.

The transition is initiated with a lateral movement of the whole body towards the target. This "lateral shift" begins when the lead arm passes horizontal in the backswing, it ends when the lead arm passes horizontal in the downswing…

Trying to isolate and micromanage specific aspects of the golf swing, generally isn’t the best idea. Most would benefit from training the sequence and building a feel for the shape of the golf swing, as one whole motion.

I believe there is a correct way of moving to swing a golf club. However, I also believe it’s unnecessary to endlessly pursue correctness, in the hope of achieving continued improvement and/or consistently desirable results.

Six 8 Iron Swings - Paying attention to 1. Grip 2. Stance width 3. Posture 4. Feeling as though I maintain the acceleration of my arms past the ball. Note: No.4 is a feel, the arms actually begin to slow down before the ball is struck.

Tempo provides the boundary in which alignments, sequence and timing fight it out. Without tempo, alignments, sequence and timing all have the chance to flee before the fight has even began.

When the knees are allowed to change flex during the backswing, the torso is able to move more freely. However, for most, it’s desirable for the trail knee stop straightening as the lead arm passes horizontal; this is when transition begins.

My Feeling - My wrists act as free swinging hinges. They are at the mercy of the forces generated by the rest of my body and the subsequent momentum of the golf club.

The three things that have hurt my game the most over the years are 1. Fearing the bad shot 2. Playing to avoid losing (rather than playing to win) and 3. Constantly tinkering with technique.

“You gotta harness in the good energy, block out the bad. Harness. Energy. Block. Bad. Feel the flow Happy. Feel it. It's circular. It's like a carousel. You pay the quarter, you get on the horse, it goes up and down, and AROUND…” - Gary Potter

Bear in mind that a functional golf swing only really has two requirements 1. Make contact with the ball 2. Send the ball to an intended target… It’s quite astounding what the golf coaching industry has become.

The weight transfer starts before the backswing ends. However, be sure to encourage the lower body to lead the way… The centre of the hips should sneak closer to the target sooner than the centre of the shoulders, until the lead hip is above the lead ankle.

Understanding is one thing, application of that understanding is another. Improving understanding and application takes time and effort. Just because you have one, it doesn't automatically mean you have the other.

The golf swing is a blend of whole body motion... It's neither just an "arm swing" nor is it just a "pivot". Feelings and cues may differ from player to player but every part of us has a role to play, in every shot.

1. The hands accelerate as the upper trail arm reconnects with the torso 2. The trail arm begins to straighten 3. The hands decelerate, encouraging the lead wrist to “throw out” and 4. The lead hand and forearm rotate to square the club face.

When developing a golf swing, I’d suggest having a model for comparison is a great idea! Use the model as a baseline and to help guide understanding. By no means does the model have to be copied exactly but do note differences, and work from there. Pictured: Adam Scott.

Note the alignment of Adam Scott’s head relative to his golf ball, at the end of his backswing… This is almost mandatory; variations typically require compensations.
#golf
Many of the best golf swings appear natural, when in fact they are the most trained. The appearance of naturalness is often a good thing but don’t let it fool you.

Playing your best golf shouldn’t feel like you have to walk a tightrope of technical perfection. Fluctuation and variation are allowed. Your best shots don’t always require your best swings, find freedom in that thought.

Golf’s most competent players take approx 1 sec to reach impact, from beginning the backswing. When striving for the desirable ratio of 3 parts back to 1 part down, the downswing will last a mere .25 of a sec! Intention shapes the motion.

Backswing Preferences: 1. “Turn behind the ball” while demonstrating a “centred pivot” 2. Shift pressure towards the trail foot (for the first 2/3 of the backswing) while demonstrating no obvious lateral motion.

In this video, I’m only “pinching” the club between my right thumb and forefinger. I lose no distance doing this. It highlights my right arm is still contributing significantly, while encouraging little to no interference from my right hand.

Do not overlook the importance and value of developing, training and improving proprioceptive skills.
.
It could be said that, varying levels of proprioception are what create the biggest divide between the best player(s) and the rest of us.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle
.
Therefore, if you’d like to be inconsistent & lack repeatability, you should try 3, 4, 5 new swing thoughts each time you play.

Without the ability to “put club on ball” consistently, desirable results will almost certainly never happen. Start small, start slow, have patience, build up and run from there!

The flight of the golf ball is controlled by the movement and alignment of the golf club. If you’d like to control the ball, you must learn to control the club.

Notice how the butt end of the grip moves, relative to the green line i.e. “under, over”. This basic pattern is common in golf swings which are typically described as “textbook”, “orthodox”, “technically correct” etc etc.
#golf
“Good geometry” provides nothing more than a chance of hitting a desirable golf shot. Developing the ability to apply club to ball, regardless of style, holds far greater value.
