Some of you might have noticed some new PR emails from me! That's because I've recently joined the team at
@fiftycc
as a communications consultant!! I'm loving it SO much so far and adore the team and our clients. 🥳 I'll be at SGF too, and I'm hoping to see many of y'all there!
I came out as gay around the same age as Ellie, and drew parallels to my own experience while playing
#TheLastOfUsPartII
. IMO, Ellie's coming out story plays a big role in her character arc, and significantly impacts the ending of the game.
I was laid off and today is my last day at Game Informer...along with a handful of colleagues. I'm heartbroken. I loved my work so much. But if you know of anywhere that's hiring, give me a heads up. Thanks to everyone who has read my words. <3
Booted up Cyberpunk 2077 to see a seizure warning come up at the start of the game that wasn't there before. Really amazing to see how
@DirtyEffinHippy
helped make meaningful change happen for the safety of players. 👏
#TheLastofUsPart2
makes bold story decisions. I had a lot of questions. I sat down for hours with
@Naughty_Dog
to talk through the intent and rationale behind major narrative beats, and examined them through the lens of Ellie.
If you’re playing
#TheLastofUsPartll
and wondering about the symbolism behind Ellie’s tattoo, I talked to
@Neil_Druckmann
about it. (some early game spoilers here).
I'm a talented editor/writer ✨looking for work✨. I was one of the many laid off from Fanbyte a few weeks ago. Up until the last few days, I was supposed to have a good job lined up in games media, but the offer was rescinded due to them not wanting to sponsor my work visa.
There's moments in my career that feel especially monumental and exciting. Speaking with
@Neil_Druckmann
(and others at ND;
@Grosstastic
,
@coyotehackles
) about the creation of Ellie was one of them.
Can't begin to imagine what kind of hell IGN editorial is going through right now, as I'm sure pulling that piece was NOT their call. So many levels of horror here, and points to how corporate can control journalistic freedom. This is so harmful.
I've been laid off from Fanbyte. Incredibly proud of everything I got to do there, and with everyone I have worked with -- these are the most talented folks in games media, and I'm honored I got to be there while I could.
I interviewed Jeff Kaplan today. He was very candid and transparent on his thoughts about the blitzchung controversy: he wants the suspension further reduced or revoked completely.
Editor-in-chief, my good friend, and former boss
@TheRealAndyMc
is leaving
@gameinformer
. I spoke with him last night about his tough decision to leave.
Another Last of Us Part II story from me.
@Neil_Druckmann
and
@Grosstastic
told me about several deleted scenes, alternate story beats, characters and levels that never made it into the game.
this GTA 6 leak might be the biggest leak in gaming history, holy shit. but it's important to keep in mind the artists from rockstar are the ones that hurt the most; their unfinished work is now public before they got a chance to share it when it's ready. that sucks big time
Every eight weeks I get an infusion that dramatically lowers my immune system (CW: pictured below).
In times like this, can we please not say “it’s *just* the elderly” or “it’s *just* those w/ compromised immune systems.” We’re all people, so let’s treat each other with respect.
Nearly three years ago today, I started my dream job at Game Informer. Today, my first ever cover story has been published in the magazine, along with one of the most ambitious features I’ve written yet. I feel super proud of my work in this issue.
after five long months of uncertainty and work visa nonsense, i've moved back to Minneapolis. life has been tiring so I have been quiet on here, but!! my partner and i are so happy and relieved we get to build a life together again. here's to better days ahead
The story of IGN’s removal of the Palestine article, and IGN’s fight for editorial independence, is still evolving and has only grown more intense since staff penned the open letter, sources have told Fanbyte.
My last piece for Game Informer went up today. I'm proud of this review and absolutely adored Telling Lies. If you enjoyed Her Story, it takes that same brilliant concept to even greater heights.
hey friends, I have just under a week left before needing to leave the country, so this is just one last push in case - if your company can hire someone on a work visa, here’s why you should consider me! 👇
I'm a talented editor/writer ✨looking for work✨. I was one of the many laid off from Fanbyte a few weeks ago. Up until the last few days, I was supposed to have a good job lined up in games media, but the offer was rescinded due to them not wanting to sponsor my work visa.
When I was a kid, I was homebound for 4 years because of chronic illness. I was homeschooled, had no friends, and no prospects. We didn't think I'd graduate high school. Before Your Eyes is my GOTY because it deeply understands that kind of trauma.
As many people are pointing out, this is just one step -- hoping
@CDPROJEKTRED
adds some further accessibility options so players can turn off those flashing light effects completely.
As of late April, I’ll be joining the wonderful, talented crew over at
@FanbyteMedia
as features editor. Really excited to a) do more editing, b) work with freelancers, c) continue to do the long-form feature writing that I love, and d) move back to Minneapolis! ✨💖
The fact that reviewers only got a week to play Elden Ring is awful, but I’m not surprised. I wish these expectations and time crunches weren’t put on reviewers; it’s one of the big reasons I stepped away largely from big reviews. The pressure and crunch is terrible.
It’s 3AM and I’m only awake because I wanted to see
#TheLastofUsPartII
review scores come in. And also so I could finally say this game is a masterpiece, and quite frankly the best game I have ever played. I’ll elaborate tomorrow (no spoilers!)
"sorry but we need to talk: some of your friends play as appear offline just to avoid you."
playstation france is just owning its followers on twitter huh
Spiritfarer is one of my most anticipated games. It's so cozy, despite being about death, and I loved playing a demo of it a couple weeks ago! I spoke with creative director Nicolas Guérin about how its inspirations stem from his own fears of mortality.
Happy to say my words are back on
@washingtonpost
! I interviewed Craig Mazin about
#TheLastOfUsHBO
and he gave some more context to previous statements re death in games versus tv, and why actors were asked not to play the game.
I'm not American, but I've lived in the United States for nearly seven years now. Currently, I am in H-1B status. When you are laid off in that status, you are given 60 days to legally continue living in the country. I have until November 15.
For the first time in my life, I’ve been published in a newspaper (
@washingtonpost
, ofc!). It’s in yeaterday’s business section beside another
@LauncherWP
story that made the cut for print!
Thank you everyone for the support and kindness yesterday. This big part of my life was forcibly ripped away from me, but (excuse the cheesiness, but it’s true) I’m glad I’ve at least made lifelong friends from my three years at GI.
Some news: This is my last week at
@washingtonpost
. The
@launcherWP
team has been incredible to work with. It has been fulfilling, challenging, and unlike anything I’ve done before. I know they’re going to continue to crush it in the years ahead & I'm sad to leave them.
hey all, I’ve been laid off from my communications position with Prytania (it’s my third mass layoff!). I’ll do a proper twitter thread about job hunting when I’m over the shock, but I’m back on that 60-day H1B visa countdown before needing to leave the country.
I wrote a really personal piece about Life is Strange, being gay, and why I want to see more queer female characters in games. It took a lot of courage to publish this, and honestly I'm still a bit terrified, but I'm glad I did.
I reviewed
#Cyberpunk2077
, which asks a lot of interesting questions but doesn't answer them thoughtfully. Without meaningful commentary, I struggled to reconcile how it treats its (cis and trans) women, and trans folks in general.
Words can't express how utterly defeated I felt this morning when I heard my good friends at Game Informer were all losing their jobs, and the magazine was shutting down. This is fucked. Another culturally influential outlet gone.
hello hi - i haven’t tweeted in so long! - but i’ve got a new job to announce soon that i’m thrilled about! i’m leaving journalism, but staying in the games industry, so you’ll still see me around. more on that soon. :)
hey all just quickly saying I'm safe, and a safe distance away from downtown. I'm going to be quiet for the rest of the day, retweeting every once in a while but that's it. take care of yourselves today.
*deep breath* Okay. Here's a piece I wrote about Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (it's out today on Switch - hooray!) and how it was a cathartic experience for me, helping me come to terms with how both my mental health and chronic illness intersect.
I don't even know what to say.
@LauncherWP
was something I was so proud of, that I helped build from the ground up from the folks there, and a lot of talented, wonderful people today are losing their jobs. They did some of the best journalism in the biz. I feel sick, tbh.
just so gutted that this is the state of games journalism nowadays - layoff after layoff, seemingly no matter where you are or how prestigious your outlet is or what traffic is coming in. where do we even go from here?
I've played and completed Cyberpunk 2077. I've got mixed feelings on this one. It's ambitious game with an incredible world, but still, it doesn't feel like it's doing much different than any other open-world game.
In the last few weeks, I started a new job - I'm the communications coordinator for studios Crop Circle Games and Possibility Space (w/ Prytania Media)! I get to work alongside astoundingly talented folks like
@austin_walker
and
@joshscherr
, both of whom I've long looked up to.
ATTN freelance writers: I'm looking for new feature pitches at Fanbyte. Specifically, I want deep dive reported features, op-eds, or something with a comedic slant. Particularly, I'd love pieces about recent games like Horizon, Elden Ring, Lost Ark, Destiny 2: Witch Queen, etc.
When
#Cyberpunk2077
was releasing, it had a scene that was dangerous for epileptic and photosensitive players.
@DirtyEffinHippy
suffered a severe seizure, then teamed up with
@CDPROJEKTRED
to make the game safer. Here’s an inside look at that story.
Now that I've given myself a day to breathe, I'm going to be pretty focused on the job hunt after the layoff. So... hello!! 👋 I'm Elise, and I'm a comms expert & published video game journalist in national outlets like Rolling Stone, Washington Post, Game Informer, etc.
This week marks six months I've been with
@washingtonpost
! It's been a wild ride, and I'm thankful and proud of what
@LauncherWP
has become in those short months. Here's a dorky picture of me by my desk (miss you, desk) right around when I was starting.
hi folks! it's been a month since my layoff, and i'm looking for work in: journalism, editorial, communications, community management, or marketing. I couldn't make it to GDC this year as it wasn't financially viable for me, so any RTs help.
I’ve lived with my best friend
@iv_javy
for two years. Tomorrow we’re going seperate ways, and both cats are coming with me (we didn’t wanna split them up). Here’s a last batch of family photos of us all together.
@iv_javy
may be the worst, but man, I’m gonna miss him. A lot.
In my opinion, you can’t say no micro transactions when there’s micro transactions and then be angry we made a tweet focusing on that angle. Apologies you don’t like the “despite”
@DuvalMagic
. It clarifies what we feel is a misleading comment which the story lays out clearly.
we are seeing a massive loss of culture writing surrounding games + investigative reporting from places that actually had the resources to do so. journalism is so important as it's not just about informing the public, it's about keeping these industries accountable too
Still looking for work! I have just under a month now before I gotta leave the country. I won't be able to get my monthly infusions in Canada for my serious illness for at least several months.
If your company is hiring + can sponsor a visa, here's why you should consider me 👇
I'm a talented editor/writer ✨looking for work✨. I was one of the many laid off from Fanbyte a few weeks ago. Up until the last few days, I was supposed to have a good job lined up in games media, but the offer was rescinded due to them not wanting to sponsor my work visa.
It’s been a bit over three weeks since the layoffs, and sometimes it still hits me hard.
Today a new GI intern reached out to thank me for a letter I left at the office, that I wrote on a notepad while in tears & addressed to future interns. Hearing from him warmed my heart.
Game Informer changed my life. I have always battled a lot of health issues and never thought I would accomplish anything meaningful in my career. If people like
@TheRealAndyMc
and
@mattbertz
had never taken a chance on me, and fought tooth and nail to sponsor my visa, I never
Had a great chat with
@insomniacgames
' Marcus Smith and Mike Daly about the impressive tech behind Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, what it means for next gen, and the difficulties of marketing a game amid covid-19.
So, my first week at The Post is done. Still pinching myself everytime I walk through the office doors. I have a big piece coming up next week, so, look out for it!
PS: I took an uber home today, and this was the view outside the car window. Living in DC is something else.
hey all- i have been quiet on here for a long time, mostly because poor health has taken over my life lately. I have Crohn’s Disease and have not been in remission for years, have failed several drugs this summer & fall, and got admitted to the hospital Friday.
For a long time, as a games journalist, I felt "lesser" than others because of my interests, and I'm finally starting to move past that. I'm uninterested in most shooters, because I don't like guns. I didn't grow up reading comics. I'm only sort-of interested in Star Wars.
The discontinuation of Adobe Flash meant a lot of websites and creators had to quickly pivot to save their games.
@Shannon_Liao
and I spoke to Neopets, Habbo Hotel, Newgrounds and more about those challenges and where they are now.
Hi freelancers! Fanbyte is expanding its coverage of reported features, so I'm currently looking for pitches of interview-based content, i.e. you'd speak with game developers, individuals within a community, organizations, etc.
I spoke with Disney, EA, Ubisoft, Marvel + more about the evolution and business of licensed video games, and how filmmakers are taking gaming more seriously. If you're curious about how Ubi/Disney started working on Star Wars together, give it a read:
Hey all,
@LauncherWP
is hiring! We're looking for a video game reporter to join our team at
@washingtonpost
. We encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply. Come work with us!! ✨
I won’t be living in this apartment for a whole lot longer, but I happily put this up to remind me of the awesome work I did. When Javy gets back in next week, his Dreams cover is going beside it.
I was laid off and today is my last day at Game Informer...along with a handful of colleagues. I'm heartbroken. I loved my work so much. But if you know of anywhere that's hiring, give me a heads up. Thanks to everyone who has read my words. <3
The Mass Effect trilogy remaster is releasing May 14. Aside from visual upgrades, expect: No multiplayer, several gameplay changes to ME1, more customization options for Shepard, and the extended cut will be standardized for the endings of ME3.
Javy doesn't have Twitter, so please head over to to see his portfolio. He created incredible content whilst at Game Informer (and previously as a freelancer). He's an insightful, talented, and tremendous writer and editor. Please hire him.
Thank you
@GI_AndyMc
, for everything you have done for me. You were an excellent boss and continue to be a wonderful friend. Thanks for these beautiful words you wrote. Miss you all already.
I had to put up an official notice on our layoffs. Still so much to do here, and I'll do my best to tell you everything I can. Today was tough without our friends.
One big thing in Sword and Shield that I kept thinking about was how it felt like a window into the turbulent road to stardom, with all the pressure and toxicity that comes with it.
So I'm asking for help...but it comes with some restrictions because of my immigration status. I'm looking for salaried, full-time work that is preferably remote in the US. Legally, I am unable to freelance or do any contract work (though by Nov. 15 I can from Canada).
I didn’t do much of anything. I didn’t play games or see friends. It was the worst few months of my life. But a week from now, I’ll be back at GI writing again! I’m doing a lot better, and I can’t wait to return to the office to do what I love & share it with y’all. <3 (2/2)
Go and give
@DirtyEffinHippy
some love. She's one of the strongest people I know who has had an abysmal last couple weeks. Reminder: It's never okay to harass anyone; let's support POC and female writers esp. with how turbulent things have been recently.
In some weird way, I looked forward to going back to the office to get my things, because it meant I could for a second live in this fantasy that my GI family wasn’t ripped apart. Now it’s 2:35 am and I don’t have that to look forward to anymore.
I talked to
@TheSims
modder
@lumpinou
about how she created the most in-depth queer mod I've ever seen, bringing several queer & gender identities to the game and letting your Sims express themselves in ways that weren't possible before.
If you're a parent playing Animal Crossing with your child, and plan to go trick-or-treating within the game instead of irl (because of the pandemic, or otherwise), I'd like to talk to you! DMs are open, and RTs appreciated.
Went out with several GI folks tonight and, boy, it’s really starting to sink in that I’m leaving. Good things ahead, for sure, but I’m sad to leave my friends. I’ll at least make sure to goose-style harass
@Joejuba
and
@iv_javy
whenever I see them at gaming events.
