Let’s just be honest with ourselves… Lluís Dalmau studied directly with Van Eyck in 1431. He didn’t just “see” the paintings. Around ten years later he painted this masterpiece in Valencia.

Am I missing something? These seem like an absolute deal for €7K a pop a few days ago.. (Although I assume they'll never be able to leave Spain.) Ignacio de Ríes (Seville, ca. 1616 - ?, 1670), Saint Bartholomew and James the Less.

Two quasi decorative+ pieces. Which do you prefer? A: Previously listed as Frans Snyders, didn't sell for a few years then made €9,500 Flemish School (Circa 1650) Best part to me: the veg! B: Attributed to Jan van Bijlert and made €4,500 Best part to me: the lute!

Spotted by the ever sharp bibliophile @mbrehe , this sold for 27K versus an estimate of 1-1.5K. 🚨 Who can help with a firmer attribution? Or say something looks odd 🧐

And sold for 50,000 CHF. Not a surprise given the quality. Fight from an online bidder and a bidder in the room.🙌

Hard to find a better painting for this kind of money. Est. 7000 CHF (about the same in €, £ or $) for a c. 1550 workshop of Cornelis van Cleve oil on panel.

Should I drag @KTonArt to rural France to chase down a painting that has not been seen in 130+ years and may be by a great Master? Please comment 🙏 (And should we do a trip report??)

This charming, though age-worn, piece is attributed to Vecchietta (Sienese, d. 1480.) Here we see Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) caring for the sick. Not a sleeper IMO due to condition. 3-5K estimate. I still like it 😍

Happy Easter! No one does it better than van Eyck (and workshop)... Aside from his technical mastery the painting has a number of ideological call outs associated with the crucifixion. (Apologies in advance for the ones I get wrong because I am away from home.) 👇

Old Masters are great because you don't need special expertise to know what's "good." Compare it with modern or contemporary art...so much conceptual garbage with no technical talent. $38.7M for the right 🤨 No wonder people are skeptical of art.

James Gillray, "Fatigues of the Campaign in Flanders, H. Humphrey, May 20th 1793" Sold today for £540 (not to me 🫥) Love this sort of pre-Punch stuff. The Duke of York is getting some heat here for living too well in the field rather than defending Holland from Napoleon.
