An 11 hour #AQI red period yesterday but not enough to sway the day, 142 average. February is a 114 average month (last 4 years) but currently sitting at 130. #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis

Ave #AQI at my house for January was 96 vs an average of 89, 2nd worst recorded (‘21 - AQI=114). A rare no rain Jan (ave = 24mm) but given the #AirPollution hammering Bangkok took we can still say we were lucky with the weather, usually at least some of that would be held here.

The weather changed &, as predicted, dirty air is back, 117 #AQI yesterday - worse in Bangkok so that should help the pressure continue. May have been a fluke but drove to town yesterday afternoon & saw no fires - almost unheard of. #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis

#LungCancer mortality data from 2021, #AirQuality data (measured in cigarettes smoked (?!) but based on average #AQI) for 2024. Still @ChiangraiGov refuses any action to reduce the #Pollution from his own province. #BurningBan required. #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis

Max of 17.5C yesterday - coldest daytime temp since Jan 12th 2021 (14C) & only the 3rd time on my records (max/min since 2015) that we haven’t made 20C; may have missed some through travelling but still remarkable. Looks like some sun today! #ChiangRai #NorthThailand #Weather

@BangkokDi I always say there ought to be a yard-long German word for the first time you step outside for months and can’t smell smoke. For us it will sometime in April or May though today’s not bad another neighbour has a fire!

We should also call upon the @BangkokPostNews & all other media to refrain from quoting the Government's definitions of 'safe' levels and stick to the @WHOThailand's for whom 37.5 would be 'Moderate' - there is nothing special about Thai lungs:

The fact that this is known and year on year the data become more unequivocal makes the Thai Government's annual bemusement ever more farcical #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis:

This coldest spell since 2020 also pushed the smoke away. Ave #AQI for the month now 98 (vs a full month average of 89 in previous years - so still bad but better). @ChiangraiGov refuses improve the situation by emulating #ChiangMai’s burning ban. #NorthThailand #AirPollution

9C this morning, have to go back to 23rd December 2020 for a colder morning at my house. 8.8C that morning. Looks as though the new front & all that wind cleared the air a bit though. #ChiangRai #NorthThailand #Winter #Weather

Average #AQI so far this month is 102, far worse than full month average of last 4 years (89) with no sign of abating - only 2021 was worse (114) but the average across the first 10 days was 90 #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis P.S. still no burning control in @ChiangraiGov

I hope it is just bad translation but it feels like the PM is talking about 'this years' crisis as though Bangkok's January peak is the problem to solve. Forgetting #NorthThailand suffers a month's long, many x higher #AQI, annual #AirPollution #Crisis
The PM's orders are, as usual, too little, too late. As we saw with the sugar cane factories, "urging" does nothing, legal action and fines can.

Dull & grey at the #Mekong today. Average #AQI month to date is 89 - exactly the full month average for the past 4 years. Worrying because it usually starts clean & builds worse as the burning intensifies. #NorthThailand #AirPollution #Crisis

#MitrPhol & #TRR #sugar brands only ones refusing even a temporary request to refuse burned sugar cane to protect Bangkok’s air. Maybe someday someone will make similar requests to prevent the #NorthThailand annual #AirPollution #Crisis
The Ministry of Industry urges Mitr Phol Group and Thai Roong Ruang Group to stop buying sugarcane from burned fields. The Office of the Cane and Sugar Board has already sent a letter requesting all 58 sugar factories to accept only fresh sugarcane for crushing, from January 3 to January 12. This includes suspending, stopping, and preventing the burning of sugarcane fields. Most sugar factories have complied with this request. However, six sugar factories, part of major sugar companies, have not fully cooperated and are still accepting high levels of burned sugarcane. These are: - Suphan Buri Sugar Factory, accepting 58.8% burned sugarcane - Thai Udon Thani Sugar Factory, accepting 41.68% burned sugarcane - Mitr Phol Kalasin Sugar Factory, accepting 35.66% burned sugarcane - Erawan Sugar Factory, accepting 27.05% burned sugarcane - Thai Roong Ruang Industry Sugar Factory, accepting 26.99% burned sugarcane - Mitr Phol’s Ruam Kaset Takorn Sugar Factory, accepting 20.06% burned sugarcane Nationwide, over 4 million tons of burned sugarcane have been accepted, which is 21.8% of the total 18 million tons crushed. This burning is equivalent to clearing over 400,000 rai of forest and releasing 1,000 tons of PM 2.5 pollution. The office urges the owners and managers of major sugar companies to ensure their factories stop accepting burned sugarcane. This will help reduce fine dust pollution and improve the public’s perception of sugar brands that do not contribute to this issue. #Thailand #AirPollution #หยุดรับอ้อย #กระทรวงอุตสาหกรรม #มิตรผล #ไทยรุ่งเรือง #ฝุ่นPM25 #ฝุ่น #ฝุ่นพิษ

Fear not, it won’t be long until it is returned to us with interest! While it is down there please ask your politicians to form a committee to “investigate the causes” while ignoring smoke columns from burning paddy & cane fields, it is that time of year. #AirPollution #Crisis
Bangkok's air quality was unhealthy for sensitive groups across most districts this morning, with an average PM2.5 level of 42.6 µg/m³. From January 3 to 11, weak ventilation and surface-level inversions are expected to limit air pollutant dispersion, causing PM2.5 levels to fluctuate. #Thailand #Bangkok #AirPollution #ฝุ่น #ฝุ่นพิษ #ฝุ่นPM25
