We have a phenomenal result from our consultative ballot, announced just minutes ago. 91% have voted for strike action in pursuit of a better pay offer, with 94% overall voting to reject 5%. Turnout a threshold-smashing 78% Thank you to all members who voted! ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿
This offer is nothing less than an abject insult to Scotland’s hard-working teaching professionals. After months of prevarication & weeks of empty promises, COSLA & SG come back with an offer than is worth that same 5% to the vast majority of teachers.
This is what over 20,000 angry teachers starting to stream into George Square looks like. We will be waiting a while for the last ones to get here...back of demo has only just left Kelvingrove Park, 2.25 miles back. Are you listening?

Teachers and school staff do not drink alcohol in their places of work, as this would be wholly inappropriate. Most haven't been in the same room as their colleagues throughout the pandemic, because they were following the rules set out by government.

Today marks 27 years since the tragedy at Dunblane Primary. We continue to remember all the innocent victims. 16 P1 children & their teacher, Gwen Mayor, were killed that day & many more were wounded physically & emotionally. This year, & every year, they remain in our thoughts.
The offer to Scotland's teachers is not 6.85% - that's just
@scotgov
spin.
The average value of the 'new' offer to teachers is 5.07%.
Basically, it's a reheated version of the same 5% offer our members overwhelming rejected in a ballot 3 months ago.
@BBCNewsnight
The
@EISUnion
General Secretary has written to the
@heraldscotland
Editor regarding yesterday's column that urged teachers to "rise to the challenge" of COVID19. Teachers are continuing to do all they can to support young people, including in Hub schools & via online platforms.
As a result of the clear decision to reject this offer, taken by our Salaries Committee today, our Executive Committee has also unanimously agreed that the current programme of strike action will continue as scheduled.

English schools to have Dec 18th as inset day. Minister Nick Gibb said, "We want there to be 6 clear days so that by the time we reach Christmas Eve, staff can have a proper break without having to engage in track and trace issues." Even UK Tories better than SG and COSLA!
Many teachers across Scotland will be disappointed and angered at the Scottish Government decision today, which once again shows a complete disregard for the concerns and welfare of teachers.
The EIS is calling its members out on strike action on 24 November, in the first day of national strike action on pay for almost 40 years.

The EIS has opened a ballot of its members on the new pay offer, with a recommendation to accept.
Further information, and ballot information, is being emailed to members at the moment. This may take some time to arrive as a result of the volume of emails being sent.
The EIS has now received formal notification of a revised pay offer from COSLA. This came well after details of the revised offer were shared with media outlets. This is disrespectful of the appropriate negotiating process through the SNCT.
If reopening schools is the Scottish Government's priority, then prioritising the vaccination of teachers and school staff is an obvious step to take.

Teachers do not want to be striking, & would much rather be in class working to support young people’s education – but, having been compelled to take strike action by the inaction of Scot Govt & COSLA on pay, Scotland’s teachers are not going to back down

T’was the night before strike,
the first in forty years.
Some anxiety, trepidation…
Maybe some fears.
The jackets are packed
And the placards are made…
All teachers want is to be fairly paid!
They offered us 5,
We wanted 10…
Support for the strike action remains very strong, with more teachers than ever out on the picket lines today. EIS members are strike-strong and not giving in.

Decision to move to remote learning for most pupils for week beginning January 11th is clearly welcome, as that is what the EIS has been calling for, but lateness of the call again creates planning challenges for schools. Further details being sought nationally.
The EIS will move ahead with our previously announced 2 additional days of strike action in January. And can confirm that Scotland’s teachers will strike on 16 consecutive days in January &February, with teachers in 2 LAs on strike on each of these 16 days
The EIS strike action will go ahead as planned tomorrow and Wednesday. The dates for our 20 days of rolling strike action have also been approved and are available on our website:
Our members are taking this action reluctantly, & with a heavy heart, but after more than a year of waiting for an acceptable pay offer, Scotland's teachers have simply run out of patience.

The EIS has expressed its support for the move to remote learning for at least the month of January, as part of the lockdown drive to suppress infection levels. We have called, also, for active consideration of prioritising school staff within the vaccine roll-out.

"The EIS is clear that, in areas that are now at level 4, the policy of keeping schools operating as normal on a full-time basis is at odds with delivering effective virus suppression."
Following the Christmas break, the EIS is clear that any move back to Level 4 should trigger an automatic consideration of moves towards blended or remote learning. Schools cannot stay open at all costs; the safety of pupils and staff has to be the priority

We are pushing, also, for teachers to be offered the vaccine as part of the 2nd phase of vaccination (beyond the clinically vulnerable) on the pragmatic basis that if the SG wishes to prioritise schools re-opening, vaccinating school staff is one way to achieve that safely.
