@DenverPost
reporter. Tells stories to share historically excluded voices. Does not suffer fools. I like my reporting dogged & my cats tabby. I’m listening.
NEW: I obtained a document the Denver Archdiocese distributed to its Catholic schools.
It says not to enroll or re-enroll a transgender student. To treat gay parents differently, unequally. Not to promote acceptance of students’ LGBTQ identities.
You know when you get a press release to cover a Guinness world record attempt for tallest stack of waffles & expect it to be some big commercial thing & then it's just a guy's house? This is SO MUCH BETTER. Follow along,
#Denver
! Things might get weird!
My therapist: wow it sounds like you really feel a lot of personal responsibility for trying to save the journalism industry despite being unable to control that at all
Me, thru tears: pls subscribe, we’re having a sale right now where —
THE RECORD IS BROKEN THE RECORD IS BROKEN I REPEAT HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE, THIS IS THE TALLEST STACK OF WAFFLES EVER RECORDED *IN THE WORLD* (without official confirmation from Guinness but with official confirmation from a, uh, measuring tape)
a journalist getting hit by a car live on air & continuing her job is not a story of resilience but of a sick industry & work culture that pressures ppl to put their job above their health/safety. Let’s work on making this a job where you don’t have to be resilient every day.
He said younger people in the store were taking care of older people in the store, helping them get off the back loading dock. “It seemed like all of us had imagined we’d be in situation like this at some point in our lives.”
THE STORY IS HERE, GUYS. If you at all enjoyed this thread, please support local journalism and click on the story & read it with your eyeballs & then peruse all the other work my really great colleagues do! Many, many thanks!! via

Friend Steve Garguilo FLEW IN FROM TX to help stack waffles. He got a text from Spencer asking if he wanted to come help. "I said the next time you send me a text like this, don't phrase it as a question...say I'm setting a record stacking waffles and you're coming." FRIENDSHIP
@MercedesLV
Hi, Mercedes. I'm a reporter with
@denverpost
. What an incredible story! I would love to help spread the word around CO. My DMs are open if you have a minute to connect today. All the best to you & your family.
Someone just walked in to bring a big fan into the kitchen because it's approximately 800 degrees and they said "I AM A BIG FAN OF THIS PROJECT" sidenote: can I be best friends with everyone here, I am just wondering
The waffles get broiled after being made to make the perfect, hardened stacking brick. Just a bunch of friends coming together to make breakfast foods in the name of GREATNESS, what a time to be alive
There is an official DENVER LAND SURVEYOR here because the dudes needed someone to take an official measurement. THIS IS A SERIOUS OPERATION, YOU GUYS. THERE IS A 3D MEASURING DEVICE IN THE BACKYARD.
& all you wonderful readers following along should know it will be weird community stories like this in addition to hard news that gets lost when our hedgefund owners Alden Global Capital continue to gut our newsroom.
This is Jennifer Laplante and Tyler Keigan. THEY DONT KNOW ANYONE HERE, THEY JUST FOUND THE EVENT ON FACEBOOK AND WERE LIKE "heck yeah, waffles!! Let's go!!" Now they are making waffle pals!
My dad called, said he’s never been so confused about where he was living since he came to US from Mexico as a young man. He said to be careful because my background made me a target, asked if I knew what to do if I heard gunshots.
I am so sad he felt the need to make this call.
Shoutout to the woman in downtown
#Denver
this morning who knocked on my car window while I was trying to parallel park and told me "Sweetie, get out of the car. Let me do this." and then parked my car for me. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO GET ME THROUGH MY DAY, YA'LL.
Absolutely awful: Crisis counselors meet with kids at

Spencer McCullough, waffle wunderkind, said when he started embarking on his waffle stacking journey, he received a 40 page PDF from Guinness defining what a waffle was. They are using about 50 pounds of mix to make their dreams come true
And so ends my time in this man's backyard. read

to see the final product in all its glory later today! & many thanks to my editor
@denpostdana
who I called on a Sat. morn to say "uh I think this is just some guy's house but I still wanna cover it" & her saying "OK!!"
Land surveyor Dustin Hoaglin laughed when he heard about his services requested for a waffle record stack measurement but then he figured he had a bunch of fam in town for his son's graduation & decided it sounded GREAT to do this
James Bentz, 57, said he was inside the store when shooting happened. He said he was in the meat section when he heard what he thought was a misfire, then a cadence of pops. “I was then at the front of a stampede.” He said he ended up jumping off the back loading dock to get out
If you want to experience moments of joy over breakfast foods and also know wtf is going on at ur city council meeting, get mad and loud that local news in
#Denver
is under attack by a hedgefund in NY that doesn't care about its newspapers.
#NewsMatters
, even when it's waffle-y!
Kid touring the newsroom this a.m.: *points to me* Is that girl the only 1 writing the news today?
Chaperone: *laughs* No, that would be silly. I'm sure everyone else is coming in soon.
Me: *pans to camera w/ Jim Halpert face on behalf of weekend reporters everywhere*
Paul Girgis from Chicago flew in to Denver to visit a friend & realized this was happening & knew Spencer from college. "I thought it was a joke, but I'm here, and there are land surveyors?"
WAFFLE DRAMA!! "We're at max capacity for production. WE NEED A BIGGER OVEN." I would say I am stressed but the cool thing about covering something about waffles is that EVERYTHING IS FINE
This is not the official stack because they literally have to use a specially leveled table but THINGS. ARE. HAPPENING. Also! Pancakes are being made because YUM
I have just been informed there is an official website for this event entitled "There is nothing important on the website, but I feel like it's important to tell you" Steve said. I, also, feel it's important
I did not expect to become the face of layoffs at my beloved local newspaper, but the fact that our photojournalists' first instinct after being told of the massive cuts was to pick up a camera and shoot the emotion in the room is proof of the pros we have.
My mom is visiting me in Denver, and I just had the most surreal moment where someone stopped us on the street on the way to the Rockies game and said “thanks for the journalism you do” and my mom looked at me and almost burst into tears and :’) Many thanks to that kind man. ❤️
Student Journos,
I've seen lots of chatter from young journos abt trying/failing/losing out on jobs/internships at Big Publications, i.e. NY/DC media.
I truly can't stress enough how much more you learn & how fun working in local news is.
YOU GET TO DO SO MUCH MORE.
I’m on scene at a Boulder King Soopera grocery store where a reported active shooter is inside. Police and SWAT vehicles are rolling in as we speak from all over, huge police presence.
I love when nat’l journos w/ 8K editors & 12K reporters are dumb enough to say on this website “man I wish I could take a vacation at a smol paper rn” as local papers try to figure out how to cover violence & not get killed on a $10 budget w/ 4 stories due in 10 minutes lol
I've only ever wanted to be a writer. When I learned the concept of reporters, I was fixated. I have done everything my whole life to become one. Worked on my middle, hs papers, college -- college! something no one in my family had done -- bc I wanted so badly to be a reporter.
Filing a story from a coffee shop & man sitting next to me asked if he could have 1 of the newspapers on my table. He holds one up and goes “Do you kids even know what this is?”
😒
Poor fella picked the WRONG GAL to say that to. He now has a
@denverpost
subscription. 😏
Those who treat local journalists as less than are truly an embarrassment to this profession, but I take pride in knowing that my local news colleagues can and do run circles around them every single day.
Solidarity to the local news ppl covering this tragedy & the next & next.
FYI to the racists emailing me about this story: I am not checking emails during my furlough but can see them stacking up.
I hope you understand being a Latina reporter covering issues impacting the Latinx community thoroughly enough to makes racists mad is a badge of honor.
An estimated 54,000 students in Colorado don’t have internet access at home, making the basic logistics of remote learning a nightmare. Of those 54,000, more than 40,000 are Hispanic.
Goes without saying, but days like today are just the worst I can imagine as a reporter. Horrible, sad, sickening, maddening loss in our community that will have lasting, rippling impacts.
I’m so sorry, Colorado.
McHugh said his granddaughters & SIL are safe now but witnessed people get shot. “They’re in 7th and 8th grade. This is completely fricking terrifying. This is unacceptable.”
More than a year of bargaining, blood, sweat & tears resulted in the Denver News Guild ratifying a contract
WE GOT RAISES!!!
Denver Post journos will get a 6% raise over the next 2 years. It was grueling work to get here & I'm proud to be a member of such a badass union.
Have coveted library card catalogues my whole life and finally found one on FB Marketplace. ISN’T SHE DREAMY!?! And she’s a bonafide
@denverlibrary
catalogue so good vibes for sure. I love her :’)
Good morning, it is 3:49 a.m. & my cat has locked himself in the bathroom & is screaming to be let out and I can find nothing to pick the lock with.
If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know this is not the first time my idiot cat has locked himself in a bathroom.
For the sake of my blood pressure, reminding myself when ppl say “media hasn’t covered this” what they often mean is “I just turned on CNN, and this isn’t currently on.”
Local reporting doesn’t always make national news, but nat’l news so often stems from local reporting. A PSA!
Just saw some young women taking pictures of themselves dropping off their ballot as I was dropping mine off, and it warmed my heart. YESS, LADIES, GET THAT ‘GRAM. GET THAT VOTE. We love to see it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
A kid in a HS journalism class I talked to a bit ago just rang me up at Target. I bought cat food, cat litter, a frozen pizza and 3 bottles of Advil which is...probably more informative about being a journalist than anything I said in his class.
Did I just buy my cat a freakin haunted house? YUP. Am I the biggest idiot alive? CORRECT. Am I the most excited I have been all week? ABSOLUTELY, LET'S GET THIS SPOOKY SUCKER OPEN AND STUFF MY FAT CAT INSIDE 🎃👻💀🎃👻💀
I was hired back at the
@denverpost
less than a month ago. We've been told the newsroom will lose 30 people. I've endured layoffs here before. I am so tired. I am so sad.
🚨📰 IT’S UNION TIME 📰🚨
The Denver Post union is so excited to be at the bargaining table today, asking our employer to do right by our newsroom so we can do right by our community.
I love my job with my whole heart. I want to keep doing it. Here’s what we’re fighting for:
@nancyleong
@Uber
Hi, Nancy. This is horrifying. I'm so sorry. I'm w/ The Denver Post. We've reported on Uber & safety before & would like to find out what they're doing about this. If you'd be willing to tell your story, I'm at ehernandez

.com or available via DM.
This is when journos post stories they're most proud of, but I'm most proud I didn't give up on this industry when it fell out from under me again. That we put out a paper every day this hellish summer & now I get to experience joy at work again & be reminded why I fought thru it
I briefly spoke to a woman whose daughter was working inside the store. She’s trying to find out if she’s OK or what’s going on. She, understandably, didn’t want to give an interview and is now trying to find an officer who may be able to help her.
Have been giggling to myself all day imagining out of touch nat'l reporters who think local news is ~so easy, so quaint~ coming to a local paper, being asked to do 8,000 things from a quick hit to investigative to a daily to a weekender on a -$10 budget, looming layoffs &
I remember in college hustling to get jobs/internships & looking at ppl in jobs I admired like “Man, I will NEVER BE AS GOOD AS THESE PEOPLE”
It turns out a lot of people are just rich AF, have always been, & live in a virtually different world from you so. You’re doin OK.
I love the
@denverpost
.
Not only is our journalism stellar, but our journos are kind, smart, dogged.
I want to stay here.
Today, our corporate overlords dared us to take a hike.

Steven McHugh said his son-in-law and his 2 granddaughters who are 13 & 14 were in the store as their dad got a COVID shot. He said they witnessed people get shot around them and managed to run to a staff area and hide in a coat closet until police rescued them.
Man, wouldn’t it be cool if the news organizations that are doing JUST FINE cited and linked to the local news orgs they get stuff from who could really benefit from being recognized for the work they do?
Just got a call from a woman who said a 2017 story I wrote about her empowered her enough to leave her abusive husband & completely changed her life & she wanted to thank me?? I didn't even remember the story, but I remember her & will never forget.
Local journalism is powerful.
A source started crying with me on the phone, and then I started crying and then we just cried on the phone together for a little while.
I am grateful, for now, I can tell other’s important stories during this historic time.
Thank you to all who share yours.
Gov. Jared Polis announces "new chapter" of COVID-19, which has killed more than 12,400 people in Colorado. Says it's time "to move beyond the pandemic in our lives," and that people w/ 3 doses of vaccine should feel safe: "Live your life, don't feel guilty, you only live once."
A reader just emailed me saying she was so moved by a young woman's story I wrote about in May that she painted a portrait of her. She asked if I could get the painting to her as a late graduation present.
Local journalism is an absolute treasure.
I’ve lost my grandma and now a cousin to COVID-19. I know I’m not alone in loss.
I worry everyday who else in my family may be at risk. Most work in the Las Vegas service industry where people have continued to vacation, dine, drink & gamble amidst a pandemic.
It's a virtue of journalism to not make the story about yourself. But as this editorial eloquently states, "We've been quiet too long." Here's a
@denverpost
editorial w/ a plea to save us from our vulture owners Alden Global Capital. Give it a read:
Q: How long have you wanted to be a reporter?
Me: *flashback to kindergarten raising my hand & saying to teacher "You're chewing gum & u told us no one is allowed to chew gum in school, so I'm wondering if the rules changed*
(what an insufferable nerd, I KNOW, I KNOW)
Just heard a Youth at the 7-11 describe their teacher as "I don't know how old, dude, she's, like, old and married -- probably like 25" Asking for your thoughts during this difficult time.
Imagine working at the New York Actual Times & typing this up with an all-knowing smirk & thinking it’s a smart take on the local news your newspaper frequently aggregates from without credit 🥴🥴🥴
People truly have no idea.

Wondering: Are there scandals of this magnitude at *every* state capital -- and we don't know about them because the U.S. media has by and large abandoned state capitals?
