@somewriter Hi Tony — I wouldn’t disagree with any of that, and of course we have a long way to go to address inequality of access. But this feels, to me, like a hopeful moment in terms of playwrights (rather than just directors, as has been typical) being given key roles at major theatres.

Very touched by this surprise mention in @NYTimesArts, today. Never not proud to work with @MarekHorn, and loved bringing Octopolis to life with the superb team at @Hamps_Theatre last autumn.

@ashleysmilne Both cheat answers in a way, but: the monologue which opens HOMEBODY/KABUL (Kushner), and FAITH HEALER (Friel). Purer answers: KRAPP’S LAST TAPE (Beckett), and MONOLOGUE (Pinter).

PLAYWRIGHTS. I’ve been doing some more of this again in recent months, and the offer is still open. If you’re looking for dramaturgical support on a new play, I’d love to hear from you.

1536 is an extraordinary play - electric line by line, its plot tightening like a steel trap - and @AvaPickett is a massive talent. This is just such brilliant news.
Former Almeida Genesis writer @AvaPickett has scooped the $25,000 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (@blackburn_prize) for her play about three best friends in Tudor Essex, 1536. Full story here:

This is so richly deserved. SOME DEMON is a superb play by any measure, but for a debut it’s astonishing. Go @LauraJWaldren!
Winner Laura Waldren is a debut playwright from Hull. Her first play SOME DEMON is a grippingly authentic story of life in an eating disorder unit, which we will produce in a full run on the main stage of the @arcolatheatre in 2024, published by @NickHernBooks.

A thrill to be directing at the powerhouse @BushTheatre; so excited to be a part of this season with @SophiaLeuner’s sharply-observed, deeply humane play; working with @JessieProduces and @Broccoli_Arts.
Explore the lives impacted by an NHS at breaking point. This Might Not Be It is the funny and unflinching new play by Sophia Chetin-Leuner, directed by Ed Madden. Produced by Broccoli Arts and Jessie Anand Productions. 30 Jan-2 Mar 2024 | Book now
