Special morning celebrating the GCSE results of our very first cohort of

Frankly terrifying situation for school leaders, making an already difficult job much harder.
Urgent action needed, as
@MoreMorrow
has been saying
This topic keeps coming up in discussion. Don't think it is realistic for children to self manage online - think we need to seriously consider severely limited access until 14 or 16.
In 20 years we are going to be mortified about what we are currently exposing our children to
‘I think there’s so much more that must and should be done at primary school into secondary about boys’ behaviour, and what boys feel they get away with’

Excited about 2024 and how we can achieve more together as a trust in service of children.
Our team have shown real resilience - 14 teachers in our 2 FE school have produced c.50 lessons a week for Oak, while the school stayed open through Easter and brought back classes in June. A massive team effort that we are all very proud of.
This is the last week of emergency
@OakNational
. Thanks to the teachers in this thread plus Harpreet and Juan who have produced some brilliant lessons that thousands of children around the country have enjoyed.
1/ If you are starting this adventure tomorrow, congratulations and thank you. You are most welcome. It is urgent & important work and I hope the next two years will have the same transformative impact that it had on me and so many friends who began the 1st such journey in '03.

The Times Education Commission have proposed that children receive a unique pupil number at birth. This would ensure no children 'slip through the net' and encourages collaboration between education, health, social services and the police.
Power of tech in school. Just observing an A-level History lesson. One of our pupils is contagious and at home but face-timed in and is contributing fully. Materials on google classroom and she is completing everything. Don't hate

Yorkshire is a big county.
And it has a big, widely prevalent problem: poverty.

Ten years ago, in 2012, we opened the doors of Reach Academy Feltham, aiming to provide the very best education and opportunities to the Feltham community. And what a journey we’ve been on!
Have spoken to headteachers, psychotherapists, parents and police officers in the last two weeks - everyone agrees that this is the source of the current mental health crisis.
And it is soluble. Stop children accessing the internet unsupervised. Don't give them smart phones.
Great to host
@lbilli91
talking about his recent book on Youth Violence last night
@reachfeltham
- great group of teachers, 6th formers, parents and colleagues from other schools and Feltham YOI.
Lots to reflect on. Thanks for coming, Luke
Finding Tory MPs talking about their party and its electability (and then occasionally, but not always, remembering to mention the needs of the country) pretty shocking.
Things are bleak and we need proper leadership, please.
Given what we now know about the importance of this period of life, we are dramatically under investing in the earliest years of life. Allocating even a 1/4 of per pupil school funding to infants from conception to aged 3 would be transformational and offer great VFM.
The
#BigChangeStartsSmall
report suggests that lost opportunities in the
#earlyyears
are costing £16.13 billion per year, in England alone. That’s nearly 5x total annual spend in England on early education and childcare entitlements. And it’s likely a significant underestimate...
Reach is proud to have stewarded
@OakNational
. We are grateful to our partners, teachers and team.
We are delighted government will sustain Oak in perpetuity and have agreed to transfer the assets on the basis that Oak will be optional, free, independent and in public ownership.
Great teachers need support - and planning every lesson from scratch can be a drain on their time.
@OakNational
will become a new curriculum body, providing teachers with thousands of free and adaptable lesson plans and resources to help them deliver the best possible teaching.
This gap is why we have set up the
@ReachHubFeltham
, to provide universal and targeted support from conception to the start of school. Great to draw attention to it.
The Duchess of Cambridge tells
#BBCBreakfast
there is “a massive gap” in support given to parents after the first few months of a child’s life until they start school ⤵️
She was speaking as part of the BBC's Tiny Happy People initiative. More here:
This is a remarkably disrespectful and frankly, dangerous position to take regarding the thousands of public sector workers who choose to serve their communities.
I alternate at the moment between feeling furiously energised and utterly dispirited.

First up our legal status. This happened fast, so right now we're incubated at the Reach Foundation (a charity). That means I’m accountable to our Project Board (see our website) who are accountable to the Reach Foundation Board (who are accountable to the Charities Commission).
📚 Yesterday, 280,000 children learnt with Oak.
🤯 Today? Over 780,000!
We're delighted to be able to support so many of you and your pupils.
There's hard weeks ahead, but well done for getting through today and know we're here whenever you need us 💚💪

This seems so clearly the right thing to do. Particularly when it is disproportionately the non-selective state school candidates who have been disadvantaged...

Thread of highlights from a survey of pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 at Reach Academy, taken in early June. Favourite quote:
"Being at home has been scary, watching the news with negative thoughts. However, you teachers have made all the butterflies in my tummy fly away :)"
From a young person's perspective, around the country, young people have nowhere to go after school - no safe spaces, no activities. Young people are left either to congregate in public places or go home and retreat into the online world.
We need to invest here.
@Ndidi1st
This changed my life. Met my closest colleagues, like

I think this is really interesting. We believe that a great school is "necessary but not sufficient" as factors beyond the classroom influence how well children do in school. That view has not been influential in the last ten years.

today - hosting a documentary crew from South Korea. They've filmed coaching with

I could see a rationale for doing this in the Spring or Summer term next year, when all pupils are back, mental health has been triaged and assessment has happened.
Optimal seems to be 3-5 sessions a week (so very frequent) for 6-12 weeks (so a term). It needs to be explicitly linked to teaching (so coordination with curriculum is going to be critical) and tutors are ideally teachers themselves.
Great start to my Sunday: email from a

Wendy Kopp had the idea that became
@TeachFirst
in the UK and similar organisations in 53 countries. Her model changed my life and the lives of many, many people in the US, UK and around the world.
My education gave me what I could accomplish as an adult - individual leadership. But the kind of transformational change that we work for, requires more than individual leadership, it requires the wisdom of many others, and working across differences -

To me, this is why strong families of schools are so important. I couldn’t run a school in 2020 on my own. As part of
@InspirationEast
I can. Coming out of the pandemic we need to make sure all heads have the support that comes from being in a strong family of schools
Pleased to contribute to this discussion. Great to see so many schools and trusts represented. Shared how we are thinking about these "best bets" in our Cradle to Career model.
@teacherhead
@Andrew_Adonis
Do not believe that live streaming lessons can work for the vast majority of school age children. Do think that resources and tasks without any exposition puts excessive pressure on parents to be teachers.
Some useful films with Secondary examples of our twelve lesson elements to watch. We use them for quick-fire CPD. In 15 minutes: rationale (why this matters), model (watch the film), practice (have a go) and takeaways.
On my way home from a brilliant two days with colleagues
@OGATrust
. Visited three brilliant Primary schools with a rigorous curriculum; a clear, powerful pedagogical model; and warmth, kindness and incredibly articulate and charming children! Congratulations to all involved.
