If World Book Day is like Christmas Day for authors, then the present I'd most like to find under the
#WorldBookDay
tree is a library in every school, a school librarian there to run it, and real funding to allow them to stock it properly. We need to invest in our young readers.
If you were offered a six-figure advance to write a stocking filler book on *anything* and the only condition was it had to rhyme with your surname, what would your book be called?
(I reckon mine would be Edge's Hedges: A Life Told in Topiary...)

"It isn’t every day that a novel for 8- to 12-year-olds reminds you of TS Eliot’s Four Quartets, Dante’s Inferno and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey... He's a writer of genuine originality... and he has a thriller writer’s feel for suspense."
So many wonderful books on the shortlists for this, so I'm incredibly proud to win the inaugural STEAM Children’s Book Prize for The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day. Thank you!

I have NEWS! (Sadly, I can't actually read this news article as unfortunately I don't have a

The discussions about restoring children's literature to a central place in our cultural life sent me back to Graham Greene's essay The Lost Childhood. Think we need to ensure the conversation breaks into spaces where ALL can hear it, as this is the time when readers are formed.
There must be a word, probably borrowed from another language, for that book-haunted feeling you get when finish a novel, but its characters have taken up residence in your head.
So thrilled and proud to see The Longest Night of Charlie Noon nominated for the

Carnegie Medal. Somewhere in time, my younger self is standing in his local library reading the books that made today possible. Huge thanks
@CILIPCKG
and congratulations to all the nominees.
So incredibly thrilled to see Escape Room break into the Top 50 Bestsellers List of ALL Books on Amazon today. Now hanging out with The Thursday Murder Club and Where The Crawdads Sing! *faints*
I got the idea for my newest book when I was
#Staringintospace
. I always tell children if a teacher tells you off for staring out of the classroom window, tell them that you're writing a story. That's what writers do. They stare out of windows and find ideas.
Some of my favourite places on Twitter are the spaces where children's books are discussed and celebrated, so inspired by this recent read and a reading workshop I led at the Edinburgh Book Festival last summer, I've decided to start something new...

On the eve of the publication of ESCAPE ROOM, which marks a decade for me as a published author, I'm looking back at this blog I wrote ten years ago about the childhood day when I first dreamed it was possible for me to become a writer. Feat.
@neilhimself
Books help children to make sense of the world, provide a refuge from it and maybe, one day, inspire them to build a better one. A library - and librarian - in every school could help to build a brighter future for us all.
I can't quite express how I felt when I saw this review of The Longest Night of Charlie Noon in the Fiction pages of The Guardian Review section today. Huge thanks

and

This column reminded me of this graphic someone produced on twitter a while back which I reckon conclusively proves that I'm the king of short children's books. ;)
The time is now. The Longest Night of Charlie Noon is published today and is a story for anyone who's ever felt lost. Huge thanks to all at
@NosyCrowBooks
and
@msaunders_ink
for his beautiful cover art.
"One in 29 children will lose a parent before the age of 18." So moved by this clip and I can't stop thinking about this statistic. This is why children's fiction has to deal with questions of loss and grief, and has a responsibility to do so honestly.
