Columbia's Abbey Hsu (
@abigailvhsu
) lived through the Parkland shooting, and lost her dad to COVID.
But the
@CULionsWBB
star doesn't let tragedy define her.
"I’m figuring out how to live life with it, but not let it physically anchor me down.
Think it’s worth noting that she mentioned how difficult of a school Stanford is before bringing up the travel.
It’s one thing to go across country in the WNBA, when your job is basketball. It’s another when you’re also a student, especially at an elite academic school.
Cameron Brink explains why she left Stanford. "I don't want to travel across the country" was one of the reasons cited.
That's a definite byproduct of Stanford's move to the ACC.
Any time the "WNBA should lower the rims" discourse pops up I'm surprised at how many people think dunking automatically equals good basketball.
If you don't understand the game, just say that.
Aliyah Boston, Laeticia Amihere, Zia Cooke, Brea Beal and Victaria Saxton have all been drafted.
What a testament to Dawn Staley and what she’s done at South Carolina.
Despite criticism,
@aa_boston
finds a way to maintain her joy, kindness and faith, all while dominating for
@GamecockWBB
“She’s always everyone’s biggest fan.”
This is crazy: “Staley has now signed every top 35 recruit from in-state since 2014.”
The first thing you have to do to build a program is keep local talent home. No one has done that to the level Dawn Staley has.
Camden star Joyce Edwards, the No. 2 recruit in the class of 2024, has committed to South Carolina women's basketball and Dawn Staley over LSU and Clemson.
Staley has now signed every top 35 recruit from in-state since 2014:
Dearica Hamby didn’t name the staff member who made inappropriate comments about her pregnancy. The WNBA release confirms it was Becky Hammon.
“The Respect in the Workplace violation was related to comments made by Hammon to Hamby in connection with Hamby’s recent pregnancy.”
Stanford's Cameron Brink is a shot-blocking machine, a fashionista, a nerd, and someone who is battling anxiety.
@cameronbrink22
was open and honest about her story because she wants to help others that are struggling.
A’ja Wilson is about to be the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a season, and she rarely shoots 3s.
1,000 points on 2-pointers. We are witnessing absolute dominance.
Yates says several teams (Red Stars, Portland Thorns, Racing Louisville) pushed back on the investigation into the NWSL, despite releasing statements to the public in support of the investigation/ acting as though they were participating fully. She found that very troubling.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma is here to watch the Sun and Lynx. He has four former players in the game: Napheesa Collier and Dorka Juhasz from the Lynx and Tiffany Hayes and Olivia Nelson-Ododa from the Sun.
One of the things they don’t prepare you for in sports journalism school is just how much time you’ll spend wandering around the bowels of various arenas trying to figure out where tf you’re supposed to be.
I asked NaLyssa Smith what advice she has for Aliyah Boston as she settles into the league: “I don’t really think she needs advice. She’s doing just fine.”
Another crazy A’ja Wilson stat: she’s 4th in the league in shooting percentage, while attempting more than double the amount of field goals as the rest of the top 5.
It takes a lot for Aliyah to speak out on something like this. That’s how you know how bad it is. I promise we are only hearing a fraction of what the South Carolina players and coaches are dealing with.
There should be no reason for the racists/disrespectful/hurtful comments that people are saying about this team. It’s important to remember that God is watching and even a computer screen won’t help. I don’t want to hear that this happens to everyone because we know it doesn’t.
There's nothing
@haleyjoness19
can't do. The
@StanfordWBB
senior is fearless on and off the court, and she never puts herself in a box.
"There are so many things I’d love to do and love to try. I don’t want to get caught up in just one thing.”
Important context: Hammon says she knows no one on her roster was interviewed because "none of the girls told me they were interviewed or asked to be interviewed."
This doesn't necessarily mean none of her players were interviewed. It could mean they elected not to tell her.
The little boy next to me on the plane is a legend.
Boy: Dad, how much is $100 minus $5?
Dad: $95
Boy: Is that a lot of money?
Dad: No
Boy: Good. That’s how much a Nintendo is tomorrow. We can get one.

Chatted with
@StanfordWBB
coach Tara VanDerveer about playing in the last Pac-12 Tournament:
“I'm just heartbroken about what has happened. I'm sick. I don't even want to think about it. I want to enjoy this tournament that we're at right now.”
Seeing the ear-to-ear smile on Simone Biles’ face throughout that floor competition made me tear up.
From 2020 to now. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re weak for prioritizing mental health. The best gymnast of all time is here to tell you that it’s OK. 🥹
What Dearica Hamby is describing is pure discrimination. The Aces organization is using what should be a wonderful, exciting time in her life against her. These women sacrifice a lot to play professional basketball. They should not have to sacrifice their families.
I promised Bryce I would take time to enjoy this moment, so that’s what I’m doing. The last time I covered a Final Four was as a student in 2017. I worked so hard to get back here and to be able to cover the Women’s Final Four. It’s a dream come true. And I’ve got more to come.💜
Aaliyah Edwards deserves to be mentioned in POY talks right now.
She’s averaging 17.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. Plus, she’s been the one constant on a UConn team that’s battling injuries.
Cam Brink is a rookie on the court, but she’s been bringing the fits since college! Love how she balances the toughness of this two-tone leather set with a cutesy heart necklace and pointed toe shoes.
The Cavinder twins (
@CavinderHaley
and
@CavinderHanna
) are basketball players, social media superstars and business women. But more than anything, they are two sisters who would do anything for each other.
After a year of freelancing, I'm excited to announce that today is my first day working full-time as a writer for
@justwsports
.
I love this company and can't wait to settle into this new role!
Trinity Rodman getting another start.
Yesterday, Sophia Smith had positive things to say about Rodman.
"I love playing with Trinity. That last game was the first time we've got a lot of minutes together, but I think you can already tell there is something special there."
#USWNT
If we don’t get coordinated outfits from AT and DB all season I will riot. Love that they compliment each other without matching, and that DB never shies away from a heel!
I asked Caitlin Clark about the "Boston vs. Clark" POY debate:
"I think Dawn Staley said it really well last year, we need these conversations for our game. That's what grows it. It shouldn't just be one person, end all, be all. There should be conversations."
Let’s start with the Treacherous Twins in Dallas. Love the coordination without being matchy-matchy. Same shoes, but fits that match their individual vibes. (Also the similar pose is amazing lol)
A family tragedy forced
@alissa_pili
to evaluate her life, and her basketball career. It also led her to
@UTAHWBB
, where she continues to make her family and Alaska proud.
“It taught me not to take anything for granted. I don’t want to have any regrets.”
Thrilled to have been an honorable mention for the Billie Jean King Award for excellence in women’s sports coverage. What an incredible list of journalists!
I’m proud of the work I did at Just Women’s Sports, and I know I have more to offer.
Flint Beecher coach Mike Williams on Foster Wonders: “I’ll give him the highest compliment I can give a player. I would pay money to see him play. That kid can play.”
I’m utterly obsessed with Olivia Nelson-Ododa’s pants!! But the fit is made because of the attention to detail — All silver accessories, including the toe of her shoes.
And last, but never least. The most stylish women in the W: Skylar Diggins-Smith. Love the way she plays with texture and silhouettes, and the signature red lip!
Kaleah Copper was involved in helping recruit players to Chicago. James Wade says she was like an assistant GM, and "If it wasn't against the rules I would have to pay her. But it is against the rules and we know that in Chicago." (Q:
@benpickman
)
Take that as you will.

Anyone looking for footage of the fight here is part of it.
ASU coach Greg Powers said Tech coach Joe Shawhan was “bush league” and his behavior was “unacceptable.” Shawhan said he was just trying to go talk to the opposing coaching staff with no bad intentions.
I chatted with Caitlin Clark — no not that one — about her name, her commercial, and a newfound love of women’s basketball (she’s a fan of JuJu and Angel, too).
“It’s such an exciting time, and I want the future of women’s basketball to remain exciting,”
Albany marks the end of my on-site coverage for the season.
Definitely wasn’t sure what the season would hold when I was laid off in October, but freelancing with Yahoo has been amazing.
I’ve been able to be creative and cover this sport the way I want to. More to come!
Growing up,
@laurenbetts12
struggled with her mental health, bullying and self-confidence.
Now, the No. 1 recruit for 2022 is committed to
@StanfordWBB
, and is ready to use her experiences to help others.
My latest for
@justwsports
:
Rebekah Gardner was content playing overseas. Then, a WNBA opportunity materialized, and she took it. Now,
@rebekah_jasmine
is thriving with the
@chicagosky
.
“She loved the game, and when you love the game, setbacks don’t matter."
Here's her story:
Kurt Corcoran had some powerful words for the people who came to greet Westwood. Patriots are operating as though the tournament is canceled for good. The MHSAA will decide officially in a few days.
Today is the opening day of college basketball (aka the best time of the year), so I figured it would be a good time to announce that you can find my work at Yahoo Sports, where I’ll be a contributing writer this season.
I’m excited to work with
@CasNegley
and
@JohannaHuybers
!
Tara VanDerveer on Cameron Brink and her decision to forgo a fifth year of eligibility (1/3):
“Cam has had an exceptional college career and fully embraced what it means to be a Stanford student-athlete during her time on The Farm.“
No one in the country defends like
@HannahHidalgo
.
“She’s like Michael Jordan. When you actually have the will and the desire to play defense, it's a much different sort of competitive nature.”
How the
@ndwbb
guard became the player she is today:
I’m not a ref and it’s a hard job, but the officials just kicked out the whole front row of Esky students and I really hate that.
They were hounding the refs, yeah but that’s part of the game. The worst things I heard them say were “ref you suck” and “get some glasses.”
I haven’t mentioned this much, because she hadn’t shared a lot until the postseason, but Emily Coveyou played this season at about 60 percent health due to exertional compartment syndrome.
She still led in scoring and rebounds, and got St. Ignace to a state finals game.
Every game day, Aliyah Boston’s mom, Cleone, sends her and several
@GamecockWBB
teammates a message. They start with “Good Morning ladies,” and end with, “Love you ladies.”
In between is a devotion to inspire them.
The Esky student section spent all game heckling Jaylen Hodges, and now they are hugging and congratulating him. This is the kind of stuff that makes me love high school sports.
The way Dawn carefully developed them this season — pulling them when necessary, not letting mistakes compound, putting them in spots to succeed— led to this awesome moment.
I never dunk on other writers because I know what a hard job it is. BUT, I have no qualms about doing it now: That LA Times article was disgusting and never should have been published.
Someone is really trying to tell people that I “think I’m above everyone” and “don’t respect my elders” because I stood up for myself in the All-UP meeting. Not going to take shit from anyone, so deal with that.
