That’s terrible, I’m so sorry. Are you free of the relationship with him now? It’s interesting what you say linking the abuse to your specific health issues. I know it’s obvious that they’re generally connected but I also have an autoimmune condition and spinal cord issues that cause chronic pain. I wonder if raised cortisol or adrenaline can cause inflammation which l in turn causes these problems. But I know very little so could be coming across as a bit daft. I hope that time will be a healer for you and that your health recovers soon.

Your mention of spite reminded me of how relentless it is to live with a narcissistic abuser. Behaviour that would never be suspected by friends or colleagues unleashed on the women and children. The deliberate ruining of birthdays, days out, the sheer exhausting appeasement of it all. I really hope his wife will feel empowered enough to leave his sorry arse sooner than later.

Exactly this. I know some people don’t like the boiling frog analogy but it perfectly encapsulates what happened to me and what has probably happened to her, to some extent. There would have been red flags early on that I suspect she chose to ignore, and that leads me to think her mindset/history/vulnerabilities were precisely the type attractive to narcissists. I don’t tend to diagnose as I’m not in the least bit qualified but after what I’ve seen this week I am convinced of his narcissism and I’m also fairly confident I’m a better medical professional than some of the employees of NHSFife. And although it feels unsavoury to discuss another person’s relationship, there may be a chance she sees something on here that may lead her to break free of his coercive control.
