Congratulations to Margaret Crownover, Medical Student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, for presenting “Does Socioeconomic Status Affect Severity of Neuromuscular Scoliosis at Time of Surgery” at Thomas Jefferson University’s 2025 Scholarly Inquiry Research Symposium, where medical students showcase the results of their research project conducted over the course of their 1st and 2nd year. This poster presentation represents a culmination of work in partnership with our Cerebral Palsy Team led by Dr. Wade Shrader (@orthodawg91), the Spine Team, and our Sr. Clinical Research Coordinator, Petya Yorgova. The aim of the Scholarly Inquiry program is to equip medical students with the skills and experience necessary to become critical consumers and producers of medical knowledge. Our team always enjoys supporting these students and learning from each other. #spine #scoliosis #SDOH #disparity #healthequity #Research

#MyWhy: On a recent flight back home, the flight attendant passed me a note. The photo below is a picture of that very note. It’s a privilege to be a part of a patient’s life story, and it was an unexpected pleasure to catch up with the family! As surgeons, it’s important to remember that while surgery may be routine and part of our day-to-day lives, it’s often a pivotal and life-changing day for our patients and their families that they never forget. #gratitude #scoliosis #kyphosis #joblife #orthotwitter

Congratulations, Dr. Su! It's an honor to be chosen. I look forward to following along during your trip and the knowledge you will share with us when you return.
Congratulations, Dr. Alvin Su (@OrthoKarate ) for being chosen as a 2025 Traveling Fellow for @aossm1972 . The chosen fellows will embark on a transformative journey across the Asia-Pacific region from August 24 to September 13. Recently, I had a great follow-up visit with Sadie, who underwent surgery for magnetic growing rod placement in August 2024. In December 2024, she had her first lengthening visit and will continue to follow up every 16 weeks. Sadie has persevered through many challenges, including casting and bracing, and is now recovered from surgery. Sadie was eager to get back to activities, and she just completed her first cheer competition! @childrensspine @NemoursOrtho @Nemours

It is well-known that intraoperative traction, a surgical technique to stretch and align the spine for patients with severe #scoliosis, can improve deformity correction. Typically, a surgical procedure where metal pins are inserted into the distal femur (lower part of the thigh bone) is used. However, at Nemours, we developed a technique using intraoperative skin traction, applying traction to the head using a halo device or a cranial holder to avoid risks associated with the previously described skeletal method. Recently, we collaborated with a former Nemours Fellow, Dr. Jennifer Bauer, @seattlechildren's, to publish a study elevating the efficacy of this technique and concluding that in non-ambulatory neuromuscular pediatric scoliosis patients, intraoperative skin traction is a safe and effective technique for scoliosis correction. We have used this method with success in many different types of patients. Just one more from my trip to Melbourne, Australia. Combining work and fun, passions, and hobbies always helps provide balance during trips away from the clinic. Last week, I met with Australian #spine surgeons in #Sydney and #Melbourne. As a visiting professor, we exchanged lectures, discussed cases, observed surgery, and discussed nuances of our different healthcare systems. @RCHMelbourne @Epworth Luckily, I also got to see the @AustralianOpen, taste some wine, and enjoy all the coffee, street food, and multicultural delicacies that Melbourne has to offer! What a city! Thanks for the hospitality @AaronBuckland, Karim H. Kantar, Yi Yang, Michael Johnson, Kris Lundine, Kieran Ryan, and Jack Lancaster. #AO2025

G'day Mates! Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of representing the @SRS_org with Ashtin Neuschaefer, CAE, and Leah Skogman, CMP, on a site visit to #Sydney, Australia to prep for the 2026 Annual Meeting. Sydney offers stunning views from the harbor, a beautiful, modern convention center at the International Convention Centre Sydney, and several hotels within walking distance of Darling Harbor. The educational value of the meeting is always superb, and Sydney will present excellent dining, social, and networking opportunities to round out the week. Join us in October 2026, and plan to spend a few days before or after the meeting to see more of #Australia! Thanks to Drs. Brian Hsu and Andrew Cree for serving as our local hosts. #Scoliosis #research #OrthoTwitter
