Brazil is cutting ultra-processed foods in school meals by half over the next two years. Their national school meal program, PNAE, serves over 50M meals daily which include fresh, local foods to help address child obesity. With 8M annual global deaths associated with unhealthy diets, investing in kids' health is vital. Read more:

Public health is at a crossroads. With the U.S. Senate set to vote on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as Health and Human Services Secretary, many public health leaders have concerns. He has a well-documented history of harmful anti-vaccine rhetoric, including his opposition to the COVID vaccine. The HHS Secretary is a key adviser to the president on health and welfare, requiring deep public health expertise and a strong commitment to science and data-driven decision-making. At @BloombergDotOrg, we value and follow data to inform public health policies and decisions. Read more @Devex:

The Civil Registry in Zimbabwe is taking steps to better track death registrations for people living in rural areas. Accurate birth and death records are imperative to better understand and support a country's population and ensure proper health services are available. It's great to see this type of progress being made through @BloombergDotOrg Data for Health Initiative:

Despite RFK Jr.'s nomination advancing to a full Senate vote, it's imperative that he is held to the highest standard. As I shared with Bruce Lee at @Forbes, making data-based decisions and having the health of the American people at the center of all positions is crucial for the Secretary of Human and Health Services.

@BloombergDotOrg stands firm that public health information is imperative to saving and improving millions of lives. Access to valuable research and historical data is critical to not only public health workers and officials, but also to the communities they serve. The removal of numerous CDC data sets and webpages will have severe consequences and negatively impact various populations across the U.S. As Daniel Dawes says, “Silence is not an option right now.”

When it comes to making healthier food selections, providing clear information to consumers is a critical step. Quezon City, Philippines, a member of the @BloombergDotOrg Partnership for Healthy Cities network with @VitalStrat and @WHO, recently took a major step forward by approving an ordinance that will require local restaurants to display calorie counts on menus. This policy will help residents of Quezon City make informed dining choices and support healthier food environments. Read more here:

The U.S. intent to withdraw from the @WHO raises significant concerns about the role of the U.S. in global health policy. Threats to public health do not respect borders, and multilateral cooperation is a vital component of the effort to improve health and save lives around the world. Leaving the WHO could have catastrophic effects on both U.S. and global health. Read more here:

The impact of the new administration’s executive orders, specifically those that pertain to public health, continue to have ramifications for both national and global work. Public health policies work best when organizations can collaborate and work beyond physical borders. The mandate for the @CDCgov to stop working with @WHO is another example of inhibiting progress in public health and thereby impacting the lives of people around the world. Read more here

Last November, @MikeBloomberg warned about the dangers of appointing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to Secretary of Health and Human Services. As Senate hearings begin today, his concerns remain urgent. Decades of public health progress—including the lifesaving impact of vaccines—could be at stake. As Mike stated, “Vaccinations are one of the biggest public-health accomplishments of the 20th century, having saved millions of lives in the US and around the world.” I join Mike Bloomberg in calling on leaders to prioritize scientific integrity and bipartisan collaboration - today, and always.
What appointing RFK Jr. to President Trump’s administration would mean for America’s health and Trump’s own political standing and legacy:

Sugary drinks are fueling a global public health crisis, contributing to 2.2 million Type 2 diabetes cases and 1.2 million cardiovascular disease cases based on a 2020 study by Nature Medicine. The burden is especially high in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa, where these beverages are heavily marketed, and access to resources for managing long-term health consequences is limited. Tackling this challenge requires effective data-driven policies like front-of-package warning labels to provide consumers with clear information. Learn more in this new @washingtonpost article:

The pandemic-era decline in life expectancy was felt around the world, and while NYC has seen a slight rebound, the latest figures show a slow return to pre-pandemic levels. Improving the health of all New Yorkers was a top priority for @MikeBloomberg when he was mayor, and it’s encouraging to see city officials release a new plan aimed at addressing these declines, focusing on reducing deaths from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. We must continue pushing for evidence-based policies that support longer, healthier lives for all. Read more in The @NYTimes:

The World Health Organization plays a critical role in safeguarding global health and security, serving as a vital partner in addressing public health threats that transcend borders. Continued U.S. leadership and active engagement with the @WHO are essential to advancing evidence-based health policies and protecting lives both domestically and globally. Pulling back support for the WHO would be a tremendous mistake, undermining efforts to improve health outcomes and effectively respond to global health challenges.
WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization. WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go. The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHO’s work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board. For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO. With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues. We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.

The FDA’s decision to authorize sales of new flavored ZYN nicotine pouch products is deeply concerning and risks repeating past mistakes that have fueled youth nicotine addiction. The 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey showed a troubling rise in youth use of nicotine pouches, highlighting the appeal of flavored products to young people. We must prioritize protecting future generations from harmful tobacco products and ensure robust oversight to prevent another public health crisis.
The FDA is endangering kids and risking another Juul by authorizing the sale of Zyn nicotine pouch products with kid-friendly flavors like chill, citrus, cool mint and peppermint. This decision by @FDATobacco ignores the extensive scientific evidence that flavored tobacco products appeal to kids and the fact that nicotine pouches are the only type of tobacco product that saw an increase in youth use last year. The number of U.S. youth using nicotine pouches has more than doubled in recent years to nearly 500,000.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., claiming nearly half a million lives annually and causing nearly a third of deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease. The @US_FDA proposal to reduce nicotine in cigarettes to nonaddictive levels could prevent 1.8 million tobacco-related deaths by 2060 and stop 48 million young people from starting to smoke by the end of the century. Public health advocates, including myself, support this proposal as a step in the right direction to addressing chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.
The proposed rule by @FDATobacco to limit nicotine levels in cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products would have huge benefits. It would prevent 48 million youth and young adults from becoming smokers this century, prompt 19.5 million smokers to quit cigarettes within five years and save 4.3 million lives by the end of this century. Given these enormous benefits, we urge the incoming Trump Administration to move forward in finalizing this rule. Few actions would do more to fight chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease that greatly undermine health in the United States, and that the incoming Administration has indicated should be a priority to address.
