I've finally driven my first set of passenger services under instruction! Feeling over the moon right now!😁
1J38 11.44 Salisbury to Basingstoke
1L35 13.31 Basingstoke to Salisbury
1L48 14.27 Salisbury to Waterloo
1L49 16.20 Waterloo to Salisbury
#railwayfamily
🚂 For the first time since starting my Drivers course last year, I've driven a train!
A morning of shunts at Salisbury, detachments, attachments and taking trains up to the washer and fuel shed. May have only been up to 10mph, but such a fantastic experience!

After 16 years, services between Waterloo and Bristol came to an end last night. I was privileged to be allowed to accompany the driver on the last service, worked by the finest crew on the West of England! Farewell Bristol, its been an absolute blast!

497 days since walking through the doors of Basingstoke ROC to start my Basic Drivers Course, I've finally got my key and licence - just routes to go! Ecstatic is an understatement 😀😀
A new one for me today! 6 months into solo driving and today was the first time I had to be given permission to pass a signal at Danger! Not a nice feeling even with permission! However, it was a nice touch that the signaller was a friend of mine from my Guards course 5 years ago
Don't often get to drive a 5 car, and don't often get to drive a service which is 1st stop Basingstoke!
158888 sitting ready at Waterloo, to work 1L59, the 1851 to Yeovil Pen Mill.
🤞for a 90mph blast through Woking
Well, 2022 has brought me what I've always dreamed of. Going from the one waving on the bridge as a kid to now being able to wave back and raise a smile is something I truly cherish!Happy New Year everyone!🥳
Very excited to say that this
#TwitterGuard
will soon be hanging up his electric whistle and switching cabs! I have been offered the position of Trainee Driver and had a start date confirmed. Can't wait😁😁
An interesting night last night; learnt how quickly a 159 will stop from 85 in emergency. Please please please don't use the railway as a shortcut or as a place for a stroll. No harm done last night but that won't always be the case...
The past couple of days have reminded me how much I love this job. Driving everyone travelling home/to visit family, with embraces on the platform and waves from families out on countryside walks.
I'm one very contented driver right now😊
Merry Christmas all!🎅
Who knew that the GSM-R had a '2' button?!😅
The timetable change means that we now work, what I believe to be, the shortest LTP end to end service on the SW network. 2V28 Yeovil Pen Mill to Yeovil Junction, coming in at a whopping 1 mile and 62 chains.
26th November 2018. A much younger looking me arrived at Southampton ready for my HR induction. If you'd had told me then that 5 years later I'd be driving trains, I'd probably have laughed! I'm not entirely sure where that 5 years has gone, but what a 5 years it has been! 🚂🚂
Travelling up to Waterloo yesterday, we passed under a footbridge, where a kid was waving frantically. It felt so nice to be able to wave back, knowing that years ago I was the one waving to the train drivers, now I get a chance to do the waving back😇

Highest mileage turn today. Exeter earlier, and Waterloo now. Some 346 miles, which is a lot for us country bumpkins. I dare say there's some depots out there where 350 miles would be considered a low mileage turn 🤔
3 hours. 278 questions. 100% ! A huge milestone in my career today, successfully passed my Basic Drivers Course, so have now been deemed competent to drive an actual train with an instructor! Over the moon doesn't even come close!

So that's 184 miles now on the route card 😁the only missing link now is Basingstoke to Waterloo which is a tad difficult to achieve at the moment for obvious reasons...
Very lucky to work with a great bunch of people, so when I got a text whilst in my taxi to Exeter from the driver who's train I was about to prep, I was more than happy to oblige.
If I can make someone laugh or smile, then it's been a good day
*inactive cab, unit shut down etc
A single yellow in an unusual place normally means something is occurring and that was certainly the case today! I've become very familiar with the countryside surrounding W75 signal that's for sure!
So today is apparently
#NationalTrainDriverDay
! Been flying solo for 3 months now and I can never stop smiling. I get to work with some amazing people and drive through beautiful countryside! Best job in the world!
The rostering gods aligned tonight so
@Callum_Ayres1
and myself found ourselves heading to Waterloo. Combined traincrew age of 45!
"The Nipper Express"
Something a bit different last night, I was asked to run fast from Salisbury to Woking due to service disruption. (There was a service 3 mins behind me for Andover and Basingstoke).
90mph through Basingstoke was a novel experience for sure!
Well this was a bit different!
Got to play the fun game of 'let's remember where the 2 car stop marks are' and I'm glad to say I found them all! Felt very weird stopping in the middle of P9 at Clapham Jct!
158890 waiting to run down to Salisbury on 1L63 this evening
Had 25 mins sitting with a set of empties between shunts yesterday evening, and discovered what is, quite possibly, the most obscure service loaded into the PIS on the 158/159s
Not much left of the old stagecoach suburban swoosh these days!
022 is in my bad books today, making me have to get out and isolate an engine in the rain! 🌧 A very weird sensation driving from a cab with no engine noise 😳
It's been interesting this week for me..
Some highlights:
2 hours trapped inside a loop due to a route locking issue.
Multiple axle counter failures with a 10 mile line examination and associated authorities to pass signals at Danger.
Some shunts at Salisbury I've not done before
Is there a better feeling as a driver than selecting step 2 at 85, then bringing it back to step 1 at exactly the right speed to end up with the stop mark in your window without having to touch the brake handle again?
2-1 job done! I think I'm getting the hang of this 😂
Well, where did that time go?😯
First year solo driving complete!✅
Yesterday marked the end of my PQ1 year and what a fun year it was!
Marked the occasion today by taking my first route learner which was a good way of testing the grey matter!
Last night's trip back from London was interesting! Some properly thick fog - couldn't see Gillingham until about 20 metres before the ramp. Still got a nice smooth brake in from 85mph and hit the ramp at a perfect speed though. But hey, there's no skill to this job 🤔
That was an incredibly fun drive up from Salisbury - treated to an amazing lightning show all the way to Woking! Best seat in the house to view it all from. Hopefully more of the same on the way back!😁⚡
Being nice today and letting our friends at
@GWRHelp
overtake us at Castle Cary. 9 mins booked wait here to allow this, which also clears the Yeovil branch line for the 10.59 Weymouth service. Not long until the crowds for Glastonbury will descend on this otherwise quiet station!
Roads day success ✅
A trip completed on the Frome Avoiding line and my first experience in the cab of an 800! (All above board with correct cab pass, and an accommodating driver)
I now have train envy and will have it for quite some time!
End of the line at Exeter Central this morning due to engineering works. A bit of a wet and miserable day on the West of England today, with quite a few fields resembling lakes 🚣♂️
There are just some units that are a cut above the rest...
022 is one of those, a properly powerful set, as evidenced by it effortlessly reaching linespeed climbing Porton bank, far earlier than the average unit would! I was a very happy driver last night for sure
Engineering work in Devon means Axminster is the end of the line for us this weekend. A nice hour to spend down here, and when your cab door aligns perfectly with the door of the station café, it would be rude to not pay a visit!
Personally, I think Frome is the finest example of station architecture we serve. 159017 poking its head out of the trainshed during a 15 min booked stop to allow up and down GWR IETs to traverse the Frome Avoider
Tea and trains 😊 Double Exeter for me today, but first, a short hop to Gillingham which is as far as the West of England is going this weekend due to engineering work!
Finally got to tick of driving a 4 car! It may have only been about 50 yards from Salisbury Reception Line onto the depot relief point but it counts!
To make it even nicer, it was 888 and 887😁
A poorly 159106 last night: a coolant leak resulted in the 57 engine being isolated.
An incredibly strange sensation driving from a silent cab!
Just about managed to make it up the hill to Exeter Central too😂
Proof of how far the EP key can go. I'm 99% sure this was a Woking drivers key originally. I've kept it for a few days, but yesterday I gave it to a Waterloo driver. I'd like to think it could eventually make its way back to the original owner...if they're still a driver that is
Given that it was St. David's day yesterday, it seemed fitting to take a trip to Exeter St. David's 🏴 Engineering work between Yeovil and Salisbury meant a nice divert via Westbury and a chance to traverse the 'Frome Avoider' - the most elusive stretch of track at our depot! 🛤
0800 and that's me done for the day! 0250 book on for a taxi to Exeter Central to bring a set back to Salisbury as empties.
Catching the 0138 service to get to work was certainly a novelty this morning. Thank goodness for Friday Only diagrams 😁
Night 1 of 6 complete ✅
Apparently I wasn't allowed to take this up the West of England which is a shame really 😂 It was very interesting watching the processes involved in the runaround though!
Boldly going where no sprinter has gone before...sort of. Very, very unusual platform for 1L53 at Waterloo this evening. 18 is the highest number platform that 158/9's can use at WAT - this can happen during engineering, but very unusual when things are normal!
#railwayfamily
After 18 days off, the 0330 alarm was somewhat of a shock, but I got treated with this lovely view this morning 🌄
159021 gets ready to work 1L16, the 0514 from Yeovil to Waterloo
***I DID A THING!***
May only have been a distance of 6ft and about 2mph but I moved a train and coupled up for the first time!
Can't wait for the next time😁😁

Something different for me last night: 1hr30 of depot driving at Salisbury; the first time I've ever done that since signing the depot.
It was a good skill refresh, working off of verbal authorities to pass stop boards, and hand signals to position correctly in the CET shed!
The story of the West of England Line:
A really enjoyable drive last night with quick units and a top Guard meaning we were able to claw 5 minutes back safely by the time we got to Tisbury.
But of course, we then had to wait for the single line to Salisbury. Hard work undone😅
No requirement to shunt into the spur at Exeter this morning so it gave me a chance to take a photo at the Taunton end of the platform for a change! An absolutely stunning Devon morning that's for sure 🤩
Quick unit + favourite route = one very happy driver. A lovely* 25 minute turn around at Frome between 1V19 and 1O40 this morning.
*until the rain came that is
Lovely 04.49 book on this morning. ECS to Basingstoke then just over an hour in Costa del Barton Mill then down in service in Gillingham.

Road refresh day today, so I grabbed myself a cab pass and went up to refresh the Windsor lines.
Managed to bag a down trip over the Windsor Reversible, which is total nosebleed territory for a poor diesel driver!
Also had my first cab ride on a 458 (📸 from Feb, not today)
A different week for me this week as I've had a route learner with me for the majority of my turns.
It's been great passing on route knowledge, such as where to find a Zebra, a treeline that looks like Snoopy the dog and the odd useful thing like speeds and my braking zones!😅
Very rarely do you get to snap the Night Riviera stock and a 159 together!
Just as strange as arriving into St Davids from Central, at the same time as another SWR unit is approaching from the Plymouth direction (albeit only from behind a GPS and into the depot)
Quite simply, a splendid Sunday. Nice snip turn at work, with enough PNB time for a cooked breakfast with my Guard. Lots of people out waving at me whilst on their Sunday walk, and an early enough finish to allow me to watch the last few hours of day 3 of Somerset v Notts ☺
What does one do when one has a day off from driving trains to Exeter? One of course goes to Exeter on the train😂
802102 sits at Honiton waiting for the single line to Pinhoe to become available. Quite the novelty being able to ride these along the WoE. Back to driving tomorrow!
First drive of 2024 ✅
Nice little Waterloo and back to ease into the year! Number 9 waiting patiently ready to form 1L29, the 11.20 service to Exeter St. Davids
Last day of the week for me! 159013 waiting to work 1L22 up to Basingstoke. Sadly the café is closed this morning, I shall have to do without my morning tea 😥
Latest addition to the jacket, designed by a West of England colleague!
Nice to have a bit of pride in where you work and there's a small reference to the old BR shed code for Yeovil Town if you look close enough. A nice little nod to the original 'Yeovil Train Crew'
A challenging few days on the WoE recently. Yesterday turned in to a 10.5hr day with ~2hrs worth of delays to my services, oh and a unit fault to boot.
Still, would I do anything else? Absolutely not. Got to take the rough with the smooth!
On leave now for a couple of weeks 😁
From the Highlands to Dartmoor in 16 hours. Another very enjoyable
@CalSleeper
trip from Inverness last night, followed up by my first trip along the line to Okehampton this afternoon...
So having passed the rules & traction course, I'm now at the "waiting for a Driving Instructor to become available" phase. For now I'm working from home, revising rules & traction but also looking at route maps and videos. Safe to say Waterloo to Clapham is frying my brain.🤯
Without a doubt this is my favourite job at our depot. I get to watch the sunrise, drive under semaphores and over jointed track. There's enough time for a stroll to grab breakfast in Salisbury and you get two opportunities to see a zebra and a famous white horse...😁🦓
