The first President’s Perspective of 2024-2025 recaps an uplifting start to our academic year, despite the challenges. Doubts are overcome by determination via a packed Opening day at
@AUB_Lebanon
and through our historic entry into our new campus at
@AUBMediterraneo
Read the latest AUB President’s Perspective 9/13/2024 entitled "Of Doubts and Determination," an issue full of reflection and wonder.
"Our students, faculty, and staff are home at AUB, and will so remain, until their next great adventure."
To our students, faculty and staff of
@AUB_Lebanon
participating in the national protests: we are proud of your activism and courage. Please avoid all provocation and stay safe. You are critical for the future of this country and the region. Our thoughts are always with you.
It is Mother’s Day in America today. I am eating a Mars bar on Mother’s Day since I used to go to Esquire to buy one for my mother Soumaya whenever I got into trouble. Which was quite often. It was always intended as a peace offering, never a bribe for my principled Mom.
Universities are incubators of meaningful change through the education and opportunities they provide students. This is a moment of real change, for Lebanon and the region. We support our community’s right to free speech, self-determination and a better tomorrow.
I cared for patients through the days of the HIV epidemic before HAART. Doctors, nurses, health care workers died then. We all kept working. This heartbreaking list of some of the doctors who died in Italy says it all. Healthcare workers are real heroes today. Everywhere.
Today marked the first day of the AY2021-2022 academic year at
@AUB_Lebanon
. It is magical to have the students back on campus, which gives the university its spirit!
I just voted in Aley, my paternal grandfather’s birthplace, for the first time in my life. I have never failed to vote in a US presidential election since 1984. A strange and wonderful feeling, whatever the outcome!
A picture of my father from when I was 3 years old. I remember him always smiling and optimistic, even in the worst days. Happy Father’s Day to all, and especially my late great father, Raja Khuri, who I miss every day.
Yesterday evening,
@AUB_Lebanon
held our first graduation on the Green Field in more than 2 years for the class of 2021 graduates of
@AUB_FAFS
and
@AubFas
. Many magical moments including students speakers
@Ubah_Alii
and
@KamelWehbe961
who shared messages of hope.
Merry Christmas to all, with best wishes to the
@AUB_Lebanon
community and all people of good will for peace on earth and blessings of the season from Lamya and me!
Happy Easter from Lamya and I to the
@AUB_Lebanon
community and friends everywhere. May the celebration of the Risen Christ bring peace, hope and love to mankind. Picture courtesy of Khalil Chahine,

Universities exist to mentor, support and enhance the lives of their students and the communities they belong to. In many cases, we fail. In this case, failure was never an option.
Easter greetings and love to our community at
@AUB_Lebanon
and to all our friends across the globe from Lamya and me, in the hope that we will start to see the lifting of this global plague and sense of siege.
Yesterday,
@AUB_Lebanon
Board of Trustees approved promotion, tenure actions for 42 world class faculty members. Since restoration of tenure 5 years ago, 200 superb faculty tenured, 60 stellar physicians promoted. They lead & transform Lebanon and the world. Congratulations!
I enjoyed every minute I spent with my great uncle Cecil. Those moments were few the last few years after returning to
@AUB_Lebanon
an institution that educated his father, Fadlo Hourani, and one he too loved. I will miss him the rest of my life.
Working with provost, deans, senior university leaders at
@AUB_Lebanon
to support our community, improve learning and assessment while prioritizing health during the Coronavirus pandemic. Details to follow over the next several days.
Grateful! To
@LBpresidency
for laying groundbreaking stone for
@AUBMC_Official
new medical center, for honoring all of our work at
@AUB_Lebanon
via the Order of the Cedar Officer Class, for our matchless Board, and especially for Lamya, who has filed my life with joy and purpose.
Magnificent graduation of the
@AUBMC_Official
residents yesterday. Young women and men of great skill, purpose and commitment who are now attending physicians!

I am very proud of our

The world has lost O Rei Pelé. He graciously visited
@AUB_Lebanon
in 1975 and gave a training session for footballers in Lebanon, including the Nejmeh football team that many of us grew up supporting. My wife Lamya was among many who got to meet the always gracious Pelé!
My sincere thanks go to the
@AUB_Lebanon
trustees, community, friends for their trust, understanding and generosity. The work continues to make this great, mission oriented university more inclusive, sustainable, excellent and anti-fragile in the face of any and all challenges.
To our dedicated staff, faculty, physicians and nurses who are maintaining the campus, healing the sick, caring for the wounded, or adopting our stranded students and community members, thank you. You make all of
@AUB_Lebanon
proud!
Congratulations to our stellar

Magnificent

@AUB_Lebanon
for their exceptional efforts and unquestioned loyalty to the institution that we all love.

to all our medical graduates who matched. For those who will now attempt

, many great docs use that route. Regardless, we are proud of each of you and stand ready to help you achieve your career goals.
I grew up in the Lebanese Civil War and it was a reminder of the most memorable line from Oscar Wilde’s play, Lady Windermere’s Fan: “Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.” The war, and yesterday’s pointless violence, are tragic examples of the above.
Proud that
@AUBMC_Official
will help launch national Lebanese
#COVIDVaccine
program today: vaccinating our front liners-nurses, physicians, staff, house officers, high risk elderly in first stage. Must vaccinate 80% of population, keep social distancing until pandemic is over!
It is essential for citizen leaders to obtain an open and engaged liberal art education grounded in the sciences and humanities. All are free to express themselves in any way they wish as long as they respect the right of others
