As a chief resident, if I found out a resident missed their flight to do a biopsy instead of feeling comfortable delegating it to the resident on call or other, I would take it as a sign we need to change our program culture.
I remember when I was a fellow. It was a Friday and I had a flight home that evening. As we were rounding it became apparent that this guy had vasculitis and I spent the rest of the day setting him up for and doing a kidney biopsy. I missed my flight. It was the right thing to do.
