I got tired of drawing all those little digital bits and figured I could use a shortcut by shaving a long line of type in half, figuring nobody would notice.

Just came across this blast from the past. Video footage I took of our first playable E3 showing of Halo, complete with crappy statue of the Master Chief. Apparently I didn't know his name at that point.
Hey everyone. This is a hard tweet for me to write, but today is going to be my last day at Bungie. The people here are fantastic and smart and I've enjoyed working here. I look back at what I've been able to accomplish these last 17+ years with immense gratitude.
Here's something fun I came across today. An old mockup I did (circa 2005) of an in-world map for Halo 3. We actually got it functioning in-engine. After a short evaluation we decided not to move forward with the feature due to a wide range of issues.

I don't think I ever sent this out widely before, but this is a video I showed when I spoke at a college art seminar years ago. This video shows the various Destiny HUD iterations before we landed on the final design. Enjoy!
We finally get the Fall of Reach episode in the Halo series and don't see a single Spartan in armor the whole time. I was so disappointed. If we had even just crossed paths with any of these 3 for 10 seconds, I would've totally lost it, and all would be forgiven.
We’d been calling the game “Reach” for a while before MS insisted we call it “Halo Reach” for brand recognition. I remember discussing the title screen with

. We concurred, let’s call it what we want. They’ve bought the game at this point.

One of my favorite things to work on for Reach was the Saber HUD. Getting it to feel like a fighter cockpit in the Halo universe, while communicating clearly was the challenge.

I would've really liked to see space combat return in subsequent installments.
Several years ago, as the story goes, there was a small meeting at Bungie where ¾ of the attendees were named Dave. This was a catalyst that resulted in the Great Dave Solidarity of 2014.

Making my own custom Main Menu design has really made me appreciate even more just how flawless Reach's UI design was.
It nailed everything it set out to do. There isnt a weak bone in its body. Excellent art, great animations, timeless layouts and smooth flow.
You also may have noticed there’s no “combat evolved” on the original Halo title screen. That was tacked onto the box logo because the MS marketing team feared some people wouldn’t know “Halo” would be a combat game otherwise.
I'm excited to announce that today I started my first day at EA as Experience Design Director - UI/UX! I'm joining a few of my former colleagues as we build a new studio in the Seattle area on an unannounced project.
Ha! I just got the achievement for finding the Easter egg of my name that I slipped into the Reach binoculars.

Watching the Light & Magic series and thinking how cool it would’ve been to be part of that small and scrappy team that created Star Wars.
Then it dawned on me that there’s probably people out there that may think the same thing about our early Bungie team that created Halo.
Subtle but useful Destiny UI Pro tip: when you see the white border around the boss heath bar go away, it conveys the boss is now in a damageable, unshielded state.

last year? I spent almost 1/2 an hour with him talking Halo, Destiny, and UX. The problems they’re solving in UI aren’t that different than the ones we address in game UI.
Had a sudden urge to relive the Halo storylines, so I decided to play through Halo 1 through Reach, one right after the other. I've never played them sequentially so this aught to be fun. ama

“Combat Evolved” was added to the box art by a nervous Microsoft exec who was worried people wouldn’t know it was a combat game. The title filed with the ESRB was Halo. But what would I know?
So for those wondering- while it worked really well in sectioned, tiered maps like Lockout or Ascension, the tech didn't fare so well on large flat open areas like Valhalla. Apart from technical concerns, players were spending too much time looking at the map instead of fighting.

I was googling for the Reach waypoints today and couldn't find a single reference, so I had to dig through my archives to find one. I don't know if all of these got used or not. Enjoy!
In WW2, fighter pilots would often mark their planes with an icon representing each enemy they’ve taken out.
Sometimes when I get behind a minivan with a bunch of people stickers, I pretend it means the same thing.
In a show of united supremacy. The Daves decided that we needed shirts made. A Dave uniform, if you will. It was a riff off the other shirt. This one would say, “Be Dave.”
Wow! My brother just sent me this screenshot. I've wondered where that went. I have no idea how I lost it and it ended up here. All I can figure is it got left at a LAN party, a kid's friend swiped it, or it ended up in a box of donations or something.
TIL that my mother is anti-vax and the only reason she immunized me was because the school district required it before I could attend.
All I gotta say is a huge thank you, to Renton School District!
