Diverse rotation, low disturbance no-till cult farmer in the Nebraska panhandle. Wheat, milo, corn, yellow peas, and some other stuff that'll never work here.
Now that
#harvest21
is wrapped up I thought I'd throw this together. Think I'll back off from seven crops next year. Plenty to think about and consider before then.
First pic is July 5th after a hail storm took 12" tall milo to stumps. Second pic is the same field today. I wrote it off in my mind as an insurance claim, no way it'd make much or finish. I might be wrong.. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
Today I signed papers to officially became a landowner. This is the abstract showing my great-grandfather on my mother's side originally purchasing in 1927. It's pretty cool I think.
Well I was gonna get some cool pics and videos with my drone this evening, but the stupid app won't open. Have to settle for regular old phone planting pics.
I really don't like talking or bragging about yield, but this is the first crop off of my first land purchase. Second best field of wheat I've ever grown. Good place and time for it.
I've replicated this over several sites in this field, so I'm pretty confident in my conclusion.. Milo with heads will out yield milo without heads by a significant amount.
I suppose I kinda like my tractor. The articulated 4wd can be a little awkward at times, but it handles that 1100 bushel cart with ease. And driver sits up nice and high to see loading trucks.
That 16 row 7200 planter I gave less than $9k for couldn't possibly work.. Stripper stubble won't work either.. Horrible ideas.
To be fair, the frame and hydraulics are janky af on that planter.. Someday I'll upgrade.. Maybe.
Fail for

, because of ag twitter. Header randomly quit as I was scrolling. Still not sure why. Made it 250 ft before I realized it was too quiet.
I used to say no one will accuse me of having a tax problem when I drive this pickup to town.. Now it looks like a flex getting 10 mpg at these fuel prices 😬
It doesn't matter to me if you don't like/want to no-till. It's your farm, do what you want.
This is just one of the reasons I do. 2" of rain, water standing in the yard, road is a mess, but I can drive in the field and my tires are clean. That low spot always flooded out before
2022 vs 2024.. Life comes at you fast sometimes. Quick photo opportunity before the rush hits.. I hate to start on the 4th but I bet I poke around tomorrow.
Is

still a thing?? Anybody got any advice on harvesting chickpeas/garbanzo beans with a Deere rotor before I get started tomorrow? How bad could it be?
Section control is acceptable I guess.. Considering the fact I don't have section control.. I'm surprised I was this consistent lifting and lowering the planter at 5 mph honestly.

Putting pre-emerge down where my buddy will plant black eye peas. First pass here since I put 2.5 oz of flumi down in November. Not all the fields are this clean but it sure saved a burn down pass earlier this spring.
Custom farming today. Still think full tillage fallow is silly *here* but what the old timer wants. I'm basically getting paid to hobby farm as a side job so I'm not gonna bitch.
Found a couple treasures under the old grainery I tore down and salvaged for my office. Horse drawn hitch/yoke and a 1954 license plate. Kinda neat 🤷🏻♂️
No-till guy built a tillage tool.. The Australian controlled traffic guys might call it a tramline renovator. Basically a VT rig that'll do two 30" wide strips on 120" centers. Plan to run on every 120' where my sprayer runs on CTF trams on some new ground that's really rough.
I'm glad I planted 40' of solid stem wheat around my borders I guess. Sawfly is even hammering the semi-solid stuff. Needs to hurry up and dry so I can get it out before I lose more.
Winter wheat is finished. Last pass of yellow peas here tonight. Have one field of spring wheat that'll be ready in 10 days or so. Summer portion of

is about done.
I'm drunk.. Wheat needs a drink soon or it'll be the best looking mediocre crop I've grown.. Also the pollinator strips gonna have all the butterflies.. You're welcome for the update you didn't need.
Today I wrote the biggest check of my life so far. That was fun.
Now I'm looking for a set of row crop wheels and tires for this thing. If anyone in NE/CO/KS area has a set to sell, let me know.
I almost hate to post this but wheat is already going to zero so.. This
@WestBredWheat
4418 held on until we finally got a couple nice rains this last week. Monster heads are really filling out. Now just avoid the hail and see what we have at harvest.
