MathBio PostDoc @Sydney_Uni, looking into how the immune system works. Also curious about multi-scale systems, and tissue dynamics

Super excited to finally share our preprint “Jump-Switch-Flow: hybrid stochastic-deterministic solutions of compartmental models”! 🥳 Huge thanks to @aezarebski, Sophie Hautphenne, @rob_models, @JenniferFlegg and @mark_flegg 📊, go #ScienceTeam! A 🧵 1/n.

6/n Ecology isn’t the only field where we care about extinction. In epidemiology, understanding pathogen elimination is crucial for effective intervention. We use JSF with SIRS model to study how strong an intervention measure is needed to eliminate such a pathogen. 🤒 😷 💉

4/n A classic example that falls victim to these problems is the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model, where unfeasibly small populations of foxes or rabbits avoid extinction.

3/n Traditional stochastic CTMCs are accurate 🎯, but computationally heavy 🏋️. ODEs are faster ⚡️, but fail for small populations (hello, atto-foxes 🦊). JSF combines the best of both worlds, providing accurate and efficient simulation 🎯⚡️.

@ARC_Tracker Very disappointing. Doing a PhD is quite difficult, particularly for people from low socioeconomic areas, and choices to not raise stipends makes it challenging to people from diverse backgrounds. A PhD is a training program akin to an apprenticeship after all, we must do better!
