@martinsw @ANUCrawford @ANZSOG "Scaling up" innovation in human services? Is @NGruen1 correct?

It's five years since I demonstrated simply not only that despite all that malarky we tell ourselves about scaling what works we never have, and in fact never could because of a CATCH 22 at the heart of the system. The reaction was electrifying. Leaders everywhere, in philanthropy, politics, bureaucracy, education, media were demanding action. "You mean we've been wasting our time with this pleasing narrative that we're going to really make a difference?" We've got to act. NOW!! (Only kidding …)

@dylanwiliam @SteveChiger @NateJoseph19 @AndrewWatsonTTB @DTWillingham In Australia, that’s the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (NAPLAN). Tests every two years. School level rates of progress compared to a national cohort of students with the same starting mean scores and same level of socio-educational advantage.

@dylanwiliam @SteveChiger @NateJoseph19 @AndrewWatsonTTB @DTWillingham So how would you measure the rate of learning? Start with two groups who have the same mean scores on a standardised test in a domain with a well-established, evidence-based learning progression, then run that test again at the end of the period to see how far they’ve progressed?

Extract from the communique for Friday’s meeting of Education Ministers. Debating ways to improve behaviour management skills has never been more urgent, which is why ⁦@notredameaus⁩ is sponsoring three lectures on the topic by ⁦@tombennett71⁩.

Ahead of today's Education Ministers Meeting, I'm reposting a LinkedIn article from mid-March on the need for Minister Clare to resist the temptation to tell the states how to do their job.

“If they hate me, that’s fine’: Classroom management is the single biggest factor when it comes to helping disadvantaged students succeed academically. See @smh article on @ChifleyCSC having high expectations & explicitly teaching positive behaviours.
