Nothing is going to change until universities begin to impose severe penalties on individual students who disrupt school events. You wanna sabotage the honors convocation? You’re gone for the semester and you ain’t getting your money back.
@BillKristol
Something broke in me last night when Graham gave his floor speech. To see someone get to the point where he now betrayed his very last principle--the very last--all in the raw pursuit of power is both sad and horrifying.
On Charlottesville, historical amnesia, and the limitations of the law as a vehicle for moral reckoning, by the inimitable

. A must read.
The attacks on Prof. Derek Penslar by all the usual suspects is appalling. Derek is one of the most outstanding scholars of modern Jewish history and Israeli history--full stop. He is also as nuanced and fair-minded as they come and a real mensch to boot. Shame.
Pleased that Harvard created taskforce on antisemitism & had the vision to make Derek Penslar co-chair. No scholar of antisemitism & Israel is more knowledgeable, fair, or sophisticated. He's rigorous, speaks from evidence not ideology, and that's exactly what is needed.
@juliaioffe
I see this distinction as oversimplified. "Jewish power" looms large in both R and L antisem, e.g., the meme of Soros the rootless cosmo and puppeteer financing the "great replacement." The far right also sees itself as punching up, even if it also deems Jews racially inferior.
@academic_la
I don't think what Saudi Arabia is saying publicly now is necessarily indicative of what they were saying to officials/envoys like Hochstein and McGurk beforehand. I'm also not convinced this is an absolute red line.
@TheStrickland
I'm underestimate no team--obviously Indy has a ton of offensive firepower and the Knicks have a rotation of 7--but play much better than they did in this series? Against a team that would have been the

or
#3
seed had they stayed healthy and was favored? I'm quite satisfied.
@samhaselby
I also had her my first year. She was formidable. I was probably more anxious about going to her office hours to discuss a paper than I’ve been with any other professor.
@votetimscott
You threaten nothing and nobody. I am far from radical left. I have no issue with your being a Black conservative. What I object to is the way you have placed your own political relevance (middling as it is) above integrity and decency. That’s it.
@academic_la
Amen, Shaiel. Basically, it’s been your feed and podcast, the Rangers, and the Knicks. I have been a fan since ‘81 and I can tell you that I’ve never seen a Knicks team with this level of grit and dedication. Sadly, the bball gods just kept swatting us down. Hurts.
@BroadwayHatsNYR
Notice how even when Carolina got a lead they didn’t do that. They kept pushing as if they were down 1-0. Genuinely one of the most disappointing playoff games I’ve ever seen NYR play. And I’ve been watching since 1982.
@NYMhistory
One of most memorable series in Mets history. In all three games Mets came from behind to win, including in the middle game from a 7-1 deficit (the Niewenheis game). I was at the Monday and Tuesday games.

A very good piece, tho I do think there’s a generational component that you miss—why many Jewish boomers and GenX (like me) feel a kind of visceral connection to Israel even if we loathe its trajectory since late ‘00s.
@genymets
Look, do I think we're better than the Braves? No. But it's May 3, people. The Braves were a mediocre team thru June last year. When the Nats won the WS in 2019, they started out 19-31. The Mets have been severely undermanned to start the season. Just chill a bit. It's a marathon
@BigBlueVCR
I don’t think he’s ever gotten the recognition he deserves. His teams were inconsistent—no doubt. They never made the playoffs consecutive years. But they did have success, and in 1997 and 2000-2002 they were generally fun to watch. A good man too.
@academic_la
This is an essential point. We should not react to the antisemitic frenzy on the progressive left by thinking the Republican Party in its current form can be an asylum for us. We have to oppose the illiberalism on both sides.

Seems to me like the “gentiles” helped you out quite a bit a few weeks ago after Iran attacked—but keep biting the hand that feeds you. What. A. Disaster.
Giving the finger to Israel’s closest allies who rushed to its rescue following the calamity of Oct. 7, a thankless Netanyahu invokes this lesson on the eve of (the 🇮🇱) Holocaust Memorial Day: “If we don’t protect ourselves, no one will…We cannot trust the promises of gentiles.”
@arash_tehran
I admire you and your writing a great deal. And I loathe Bibi. But you can’t launch an attack the magnitude of Sunday morning and expect that Israel is not going to retaliate. And from what we know thus far (big caveat), it doesn’t seem like they’ve tried to escalate

Amen. Don't let last night's score deceive you. Shesty still had to make many more high-difficulty saves. He's been amazing in every game. Honestly hard to think of a single weak goal he's given up.

Leonard Cohen actually went to Israel during the Yom Kippur War and visited and sang for soldiers in the Sinai. Check out Matti Friedman’s book about it “Who By Fire.”
Say what you want about the guy (and unlike the Squad, I happen to like him), he knows how to pronounce the fricative [x] in Hanukkah. And that counts for something.

Check out this new book “No Masters but God” about revolutionary religious anarchists. Contains chapter on, among others, Isaac Nahman Steinberg, probably the best known of the bunch, and Yehuda Meir Ashlag, who tried to reconcile Marxist and Kabbalistic thought.
@DaveyUpper
I just don’t see anything about Laf’s game that suggests he’s even a slowly developing star. He is not a particularly good skater, shooter (see: Monday nite), or puckhandler; his vision is OK, nothing more. By this point you tend to see flashes, even if inconsistently.
@jbf1755
What also galls me are the lies he tells and the total lack of pushback on the part of the interviewer. The House Democrats made every effect to make this a bipartisan committee, and there were Republicans who wanted to play ball, but when Trump balked, McC cut them at the knees.
Check out this launch event today for book for which I wrote about historiographic debates on the relationship between the concept of the “ghetto” and antisemitism.

I’ll go back to Sean Connery’s epic advice to Kevin Costner’s Eliot Ness in “The Untouchables” (1987): “Ya wanna know how to get Capone, I’ll tell ya how to get Capone. One of his pulls a knife, you pull a gun; he puts one of yours in the hospital, you put one of his in the

The 1989 Giants were really good. Not sure anyone could have stopped the Niners that year, but the Giants, I believe, would have been a much tougher out than either the Rams or the Broncos.

Yeah, that was a real smart war Israel chose to fight. And guess what? It was the REAGAN administration that stopped the flow of arms then. Or did you even know there was a war on 6/22/82?
That it’s become normal for prez admin staff to publicly but anonymously castigate the prez they work for—including when he has absolutely zilch to do with how uni admins deal w these protests—is yet 1 more way things are so effed up.
@SegByDesign
Great thread, but strange that you never mention that, in late 19C/early 20C, this was the original Jewish immigrant "ghetto" that sociologists like Louis Wirth wrote about.
@BigBlueVCR
I agree 100%. And frankly I think it would be good if Mara just stated publicly that both Schoen and Daboll will be back next year. Perhaps that will encourage Daboll to relax a bit and give more stuff a try.

There is a vast center in this election to be seized. Biden should call the bluff of the far left and try his darnedest to speak to these voters. And then, if he wins, he can tell them to shove off entirely.
1. I am not leaving anytime soon.
2. My Jewish family isn’t from Europe or the USA - they’re from Egypt and the former USSR and Israel became their safe haven from anti-Zionist persecution and afforded them opportunity and prosperity.
3. From Hamas.

He gave the Bernie people too much say in the staffing of his administration. I’m sure Bibi is a headache beyond words. But this is not only wrong strategically; it’s wrong politically. The progressives will not be allayed by this.
@zackbeauchamp
I also think many of us don’t want to be boxed into a “pro-Israel” camp—for some of the very reasons you mention—even while we feel this connection is our kishkes.
@BillKristol
He just doesn't get it. The coalition that got him over the finish line in 2020 will not hold this time around. He has to choose between the progressives and what I think is a pretty large pool of non-woke L to ctr R voters. IMO he's better off rolling the dice with the latter
@KevG163
I remember the shock and sudden emptiness I felt when Flipper caught that ball and kept running. 1989 Giants were damn good and I never thought we would lose to the Rams at home.
@BigBlueVCR
For most of their history, the Giants have been identified (even when they were bad) with playing strong defense. If you came I’d age as I did on the Giants of the ‘80s, a game like Thursday night’s is especially painful.
Why is there a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt? Two words: Jimmy Carter. Do I agree with everything he's said and done since? No. Still, history will remember him better than his contemporaries. I wish him peace in his final days.

I had her in my introductory historiography class my first year at Columbia. You’re right—she was terrifying. But years later, when I was giving a practice job talk, she said, “I’d hire you.” I thought that was quite the compliment coming from her.
