Fascinating to see the South China Morning Post – the once fiercely independent HK media outfit – shift to a more Beijing-friendly stance, especially after its acquisition by the Alibaba Group a few years ago. That’s understandable and, frankly, expected, of course. Trivia: the late Bobby Ongpin was once SCMP’s vice chair, back when it was owned by Malaysian billionaire Robert Kuok.

I think it would be more transparent and more ethical for my former Inquirer colleagues to openly declare stories as AI-generated (as they did briefly starting late May of last year)… rather than have these stories attributed to a fictitious ‘Antonio Inares’ (initials for “A.I.”?) persona.

As a cub reporter for BusinessWorld, I had the good fortune of posing a question to him during the main press conference of the 2000 IMF Annual Meeting in Prague. Naturally, an inexperienced journalist always worries that the official will think that he/she is asking a stupid question. So it was a thrill for me to see that his reply to my query about East Asia's post-1997 recovery was carried by wire agencies. Rest in peace, Your Excellency. -----
