@RupertMyers Why are returns on farming so low compared to asset value? Is it because agricultural land values are inflated by IHT exemption? It doesn’t make sense.

@old_wino2 @SimonForrest11 Horace meant it. It took Owen to make it ‘The old Lie’. Difference between the classical pre-Christian world - with all its bloody splendour - and our world.

@danielmgmoylan @ChrisGiles_ Not ‘snaffled’ 100% but subject to IHT at 40% if the rest of the estate is valued at more than £325k (or more if certain conditions are met). It was a useful way of avoiding IHT.

@nialloconghaile Changing to PR is key. It would ensure that governments reflected the majority, which has always been less extreme than Conservative administrations. A written constitution would also be desirable but would take a while to devise and would need the stability of PR.

@aigne_aighne Most English or other nationalities with no acquaintance of Irish would be totally flummoxed. Where is Dublin? How do you pronounce the names? I think the English versions of names should be retained for tourists alongside the Irish.

@LittleGrayCat @MichaelRosenYes @MaskedManOfMys1 @CelticKali No. France was always ruled by the King of France, to whom the King of England paid homage for his French possessions. Later kings had a claim to the French throne but that was never realised.

@MichaelRosenYes @MaskedManOfMys1 Ireland and Scotland were always separate kingdoms unlike Wales. There never was a unified UK in the way that France is.

@BestForBritain @MattBarbet I have an idea of Englishness - history good and bad, literature, language and sport. All a little less uniquely English by being successful internationally. But I'm not aware of that identity being suppressed.
