Alas, like many good visualizations, the first effect of this new capability was to emphasize that we need better data β€” many maps have no rhyme or reason to their fault directions. I'm excited to work on that!

Mapboard is progressing to the point where debugging over the last few days has mostly been idle sketching of British Columbia fjordland coasts. The fun-to-annoyance ratio has been moving in a positive direction!

Happy to report another release of version 3.3.0, which, among other improvements, allows drawing maps in 3D! Surprisingly, (and owing to the great work at @Mapbox), this really was trivial to add, even with the editing overlay. πŸŽ‰

Excited to report that Mapboard GIS version 3 is on the App Store. It's been cooking for long time, with huge @Mapbox and @OSGeo updates under the hood. It also has a new "reshape" tool that makes map editing even more fun!

@5122Oliver Nope! This is using a much slower transformation than the desired solution, where all the fancy coordinate transformations happen in C. But that requires translating the simple linear algebra into PROJ-speak

The first public beta of Mapboard GIS 3.0 is now out on TestFlight! It's a HUGE update to the app's internals, with many fixes and fantastic new drawing tools. I'm excited to receive feedback and bug reports before release...

@JakeOnOrbit @exoseismologist @Peter_Grindrod Hah yeah @cirquelar! Nice to see people interested. There's an LPSC 2022 abstract about it, it was generated by text data mining for Image IDs on (which stores ALL the papers!). It's going to exit beta eventually when I finally find time to write it up :D

For what it's worth, this is still pretty far from becoming public, but it's cool to see what's possible with some otherwise hard-to notice work on improving our infrastructure and server software.

The downside of preparing a talk about your fancy visualization software is that it's hard to make slides at short notice β€” you can always make your software just that little bit fancier.

@tectonicSZ @OSGeo Everything we do is based on GPlates, but keeping it within PostGIS *could* allow us to transform lots of data extraordinarily quickly. PROJ is really fast! But the transformations don't quite work yet. Could be just a confusing API, or I misunderstand the internals...

Also @TerribleMaps should know about this abomination, maybe.

Hi @OSGeo cartography folks β€” I'm trying to do arbitrary geographic rotations with Proj but struggling with the rotation conventions. Anyone have any pointers? Check out my cri de coeur here...
