I grew up in a small, ugly town and was raised by poor and unhappy parents who lived in a rented one-room apartment with old, shabby furniture and paper-thin walls. Our food was never good enough and the wine was always cheap and too sweet.

That's me posing with kalyna (viburnum), a symbol of Ukraine. Our famous song "Oi u luzi chervona kalyna" has always been associated with aspiration for independence. In Soviet times, anyone caught singing it was jailed, beaten, and even exiled. Now you can hear it everywhere
